‘UMT EXPANDS ITS INDUSTRY LINKAGES, AN ACCELERATED PATH TOWARDS GRADUATES WITH

ACCA PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATON’Students of UMT’s Bachelor of Accounting have a brilliant prospect to achieve three goals concurrently – a Bachelor of Accounting from UMT, passing ACCA professional examinations, and completing part of the Practical Experience Requirement (PER) for ACCA professional qualification.

Selected students now have a new alternative under the 2u2i programme, this time via the 3u1i mode named, “INternary”, a strategic collaboration between UMT and the globally acclaimed professional accountancy body, ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). Through “INternary”, UMT students will have the opportunity to gain real work experience in the industry for a whole one year, which is claimable towards ACCA’s Practical Experience Requirement (PER), thus accelerating their professional qualification recognition from ACCA.

Within the ambit of the Ministry of Education’s 2u2i programme, the implementation of “INternary”, a study mode of three years on-campus and one year in industry, is also in line with the government’s aim to increase university-industrial relations. 2u2i is a work-based learning (WBL) program which provides industrial exposure to students throughout their study by way of collaboration between academia and industry. By experiencing WBL, students will be able to learn the details of

accounting services with more depth in order to equip themselves with multiple skillsets such as communication, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving.

This ACCA-UMT collaboration is synergistic with a prior joint effort also with ACCA under the program “ACCA Accelerate”, which enables students to register and sit for ACCA professional examinations before they graduate. Students selected for “INternary” will obtain combined advantages both from ACCA Accelerate as well as from the one year industrial attachment. Even more attractive is the fact that their industrial placements will be in global accountancy firms that are also accredited as ACCA Approved Employers, facilitating the recognition of that one year experience as one step forward to achieving their professional qualification. Through continuous monitoring from the industry, UMT accounting students will be industry-ready and able to portray themselves as a more holistic graduate to their prospective employers. Currently, eight employers are committed in supporting the programme including KPMG, Ernst & Young (EY), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Deloitte, Baker Tilly, Grant Thornton, Maybank and Paramount.

Ultimately, “INternary” provides selected UMT Bachelor of Accounting students a bright opportunity to achieve three main goals simultaneously – a Bachelor of Accounting from UMT, passing ACCA professional examinations, and completing one-third of the Practical Experience Requirement (PER) for ACCA professional qualification.

The 3rd UMT-PSU Staff Mobility Programme was successfully held on 26-29th July 2018 at UMT. This programme was initiated by the School of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences (PPSPA) UMT in 2016 at UMT, and alternately organized by the Faculty Of Science And Technology (SAT), PSU in 2017 at their Pattani campus, Thailand. The main objectives of this programme are to strengthen the friendship between the two universities, to learn and understand respective cultures and languages, to provide opportunities in academic and research collaborations. During this programme, 19 PSU staff visited the Mahseer sanctuary

at Kenyir Lake by boarding the Siti Maya, UMT’s research boat laboratory. They were thrilled and had lots of fun with the trekking and Mahseer feeding activities. Later, several sports and fun games were played by the staffs of both universities to compete for the Dean’s Trophy. The ultimate victory went to PPSPA after much effort. Sporting spirit was showed by all the players from both universities! We thank UMT International Center for partially sponsoring the simple yet warm farewell party. We look forward to seeing our PSU counterparts again next year in Thailand!

FUNGI DAY 2018

Fungi Day 2018 was organised on 19th August 2018 by Laboratory for Pest, Disease and Microbial Biotechnology (LAPDiM), School of Food Science and Technology. The first Fungi Day was held in 2014. This year, various programs have been organised in conjunction with this event such as seminar, mushroom cooking competitions, mycology exhibition and sharing sessions of interesting info on fungi kingdom. The program also involved the internship students who were undergoing industrial training at National Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan and Khon Kaen University, Thailand.

Besides that, students from Panji Alam Secondary School, Kuala Terengganu were also invited in order to expose them to new knowledge on fungi through presentations by Professor Yu-Chung Chiang from National Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan as well as other researchers from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu namely Dr. Andrew A. Ngadin, Dr. Siti Nordahliawate Mohamed Sidique, Dr. Wan Hafiz Wan Zainal Shukri and last but not least, a

speaker from the Agrotech Mashaf Industry, Afizah Mat Sulaiman.

According to the head of Fungi Day 2018 programme, Dr. Andrew A. Ngadin, fungi play an important role to balance the ecosystem, and it is also important to our economy. Fungi are often found in terrestrial and aquatic environments (marine and freshwater), and are parts of a diverse community of “decomposers” that break down dead plants and animals. Fungi also transform organic matter into forms that can be utilized by other decomposers, and into food for plants. He added that his team intends to organize the same programme on a larger scale in the future and will involve other organisations such as IUCN, Species Survival Commission (SSC), Mushroom, Bracket and Puffball Specialist Group and Chicago Botanic Garden, USA to let more people to understand the importance of fungi in the ecosystem, conservation and introduce new policies to protect fungi. The latest plan by his team is to organize the Southeast Asia Fungi Red List workshop in 2019.
