Investment has taken place in the IMD in-house design and test facility where a new switch and socket endurance fixture has been commissioned. Tests such as the required 15,000 plug insertions to ensure compliance with BS1363-pt.2 is carried out on socket outlets. This is not only used for new product development to meet the standard but also routine type testing from stock items takes place to ensure continuing compliance.

The IMD design department has invested in 3D printing technology to assist the design process and has since found many other uses! This is now used to trial the newly designed or altered products to ensure their specification meets the standards required. Once a computer aided design is created, models can be produced within hours to evaluate and improve the product’s design quickly and efficiently.

Welcome!The brands of the Installation Materials Division continue to thrive in the electrical supply market place with developments of product, marketing, web design and social media.

As Amendment 3 of the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations continues to be interpreted as regards the use of non-combustible materials for the enclosures of consumer units, M2 and Proteus introduce versions with self-closing covers (see pg. 4).

Also IMD goes on the road with exhibitions in Manchester and Exeter with more planned (see page 9).

CentaurThe Centaur catalogue now includes the successful Meridian range of three compartment dado trunking. Other new products include the unique dry lining boxes with spring action lugs now available in 47mm deep versions and flexible conduits available in ten metre handy contractor packs.

Tamlex now include their Tamtrak 63 amp underfloor busbar system and the re-styled floor box range. Also specialised products developed for security areas, which includes the recently certified IP4X trunking range.

The new products featured in the Proteus catalogue include not only the Amendment 3 metalclad consumer units and accessories but also the industrial IP65 rated ‘all weather’ enclosures with all new clear door variations.

Proteus Industrial Switchgear of Telford were asked to serve up something special for AB Produce of Measham, Leicestershire for their main 2500A L.V. switchboard and sub MCCB panel boards.Having competitively tendered for this project, Proteus Industrial worked closely with Electrical Design Consultant Andrew Snipe of AS Engineering – Energy Services, based in North Oxfordshire over a six month period assisting with the design of the project’s electrical distribution boards and panels. The contract was subsequently awarded to supply a 2500A LV main Incomer / Generator Switchboard and Panel Boards for sub distribution fully compliant to BSEN 61439 – 1 and 2.

The operations that constitute the Installation Materials Division were paid a visit by the High Sherriff of Warwickshire recently.

The office of High Sherriff has existed for over 1,000 years and whilst these days the role is mainly ceremonial it holds responsibilities within the judiciary and the offices of law and order which are conferred by the Crown through warrant from the Privy Council.

As part of a large refurbishment to the offices for its online and welfare services, Glaxo Smith Kline in Maidenhead chose Centaur’s Meridian range for their cable management solution. The soft edge styling of Meridian offered generous wiring capacity for all their power and data requirements leaving an attractive curved appearance.

The three compartment trunking provides hinged outer covers that in the lower position cradles the cables prior to the cover being clipped back into position. Indeed, all covers for bends and tees are simply but effectively clipped on with an option for screw fixing should added security be necessary.

Other features include controlled sweeps for Cat 6 / Cat 7 compliance for data cables and internal / external corner units have been so designed to adjust for corners that are not true 90 degrees.

Owner Ben Smith of Lightning Solutions, the installation contractors, said, “I will definitely be using Meridian on future projects, the clip-on bends made installation both quick and easy. There was no need to force the lid onto retaining clips, leaving a great modern finish”.

Some trunking installations can be in danger of being contaminated with dust and other particles; a common issue when trunking is cut on site.

Particles can find their way into the installation causing infestation and contamination leading to health issues. These can become a problem especially in hygiene critical environments such as food, beverage, brewing and pharmaceutical industries.In Amendment 3 of BS 7671, a note has been

added to the regulation as follows:

‘For a trunking system to meet IP4X requirements, IP4X trunking and related system components would need to be installed’.Tamlex is now one of only a few manufacturers in the UK to achieve certification of compliance to IP4X trunking systems.

The unique dual terminal that was purposefully designed to ensure a safer connection for incoming connections on M2 mains isolators has been granted its UK patent. The depth of the terminal allows for extra length of the copper conductors to be anchored by the twin screws. This substantially reduces the risk of poor connections which in turn lead to the house fires which in due course lead to Amendment 3 and non-combustible enclosures. IMD have always believed that prevention is better than cure!

Following a 2 day factory tour arranged by Kevin Remon, Branch Manager at City Electrical Factors in Lowestoft, Mark Thurston and two electrical engineers from Waveney District Council selected M2 XS Amendment 3 consumer units and M2 white moulded wiring accessories for their local housing specifications.

The three pole isolator, mainly used for domestic fan control, will be available as an M2 module which will permit its use in both white moulded and decorative metal plate formats. When used in a three module plate the addition of a fuse can be made to further protect fans from overload situations.

The new combined M2 catalogue will be available shortly. It will mainly feature the new additions of the 17th edition compliant metal clad consumer units and also the decorative ranges of wiring accessories along with other new and innovative product offerings.
