NEWS AND NOTES FEBRUARY 2014.

OPEN LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY Despite my best efforts, it seems that printing of the December issue took too long (again) but I hope that all the (local) members received their copy in good time for Christmas. Welcome to 2014. After all the exciting events of last year, notably the Melbourne show that was such a huge success, 2014 stretches before us with only the regular Stampex shows to look forward to. That is not to denigrate our Convention, which this year will be in the congenial surroundings of Stratford upon Avon, with plenty of local attractions and a town centre readily accessible on foot from the hotel. So far I have been singularly underwhelmed by the response to my request for candidates for Editor. I am, of course, open to alternative offers. If someone wishes to take over as Secretary, then I would be prepared to continue as Editor, but it is neither practical nor responsible to have so much of the Society dependent on a single person. Please consider seriously whether you could take on one of these roles and help our Society continue to flourish. It is interesting to observe the changing patterns in collecting. It seems that, certainly for Australia, pre-stamp mail is no longer in fashion, whereas correctly used single frankings and destination mail are flavour of the year. Revenues, especially those correctly used on document, are still popular, but no longer a cheap option. Now that some research has been published identifying producers, even the humble First Day Cover has acquired a following among more serious collectors, even if only for earlier examples. Now that there is a comprehensive catalogue, perhaps we shall see a resurgence in the collecting of Stationery in its many and varied forms, including Printed to Private Order (PTPO). There is much fascinating material around, and finding some items used commercially is often difficult. My shoebox is full, so I must mount some more up! As you will no doubt find out at Convention from our Eric Ash speaker, there are still new items and varieties to be discovered and documented (VERY important, so that the knowledge is not lost) many years after the item was first issued. Finally, I note that the rise of Open Philately has created great interest in relevant ephemera. This can create opportunities for pernicious sideline collections of items such as: Rail Tickets, Bus Tickets, Ferry Tickets, Souvenir Programmes and Brochures – I am sure the list is endless. Whatever aspect of Australian Philately you may collect, may I wish you good hunting during the year, and great enjoyment from the hobby, be it in the thrill of the chase, the pleasure of acquisition, the satisfaction of sharing items with others or just the social pleasure of time spent talking with fellow collectors.

AEC REPORT OF THE LONDON MEETING ON 13th NOVEMBER 2013 Some 14 members attended to see David Speer’s display of the Harold King Collection, but prior to the main business, an appeal was made for members to offer themselves for the post of Editor of the Bulletin, and tributes were paid to recently deceased member Ken Hack, who had been a regular attended at our London meetings. Harold King was a Society member who had trained as a cartographer, and many of his display sheets are beautifully illustrated. The collection is more in the spirit of Open philately than formal exhibiting, and includes historical details and relevant postmarks and ephemera. The first section covered the quest for and discovery of Australia, settlement and the establishment of the Colonies. In the 16th Century, the maritime world was dominated by the Spanish and Portuguese, and later the Dutch became a maritime power (remember van Tromp and the Medway?) and the first recorded European to land on Australia was Dirk Hartog, who landed on the West Coast. Abel Tasman was sent out from the Dutch East Indies to look for the Southern Continent, but went too far south and discovered van Diemen’s Land and New Zealand. Captain Cook landed at Botany Bay and in 1788, prisoners were sent there, but landed and established a settlement at Port Jackson (now Sydney). There were sections covering exploration by Bass, Flinders and others, the establishment of settlements, the difficulties faced in Western Australia and Tasmania and the founding of South Australia, the only Colony with free settlers. There were further sections on: the crossing of the Great Dividing Range (in 1813); the explorations of Sturt, Leichhardt and Mitchell; the south to north crossing by Stuart, the introduction of Merino sheep and finally the ‘clean-up’ of New Soth Wales by Governor Macquarie. The second part was a range of free-standing sections of varying length devoted to specific locations or topics. We were shown sections on: Coober Pedy; Richmond Bridge (Tas.), Ayers Rock (Uluru); Swan Hill Folk Museum; Mount Kosciusko; Adelaide Post Office and other South Australian Post Offices; Henry Kendall; the Australian Post Office and a selection of cancellers. A section on planes in the Development of Australia came next , followed by some of Harold’s “Story behind the Stamp” features, notably on John Flynn and The Royal Flying Doctor Service. Finally, an article on the Post Office at Moliagul, Vic., re-erected after closure at Epsom View. Brian Peace gave the vote of thanks. He knew Harold King very well as a prodigious writer of articles for the Bulletin (which Brian, as Editor often had to rewrite) and he has left a tremendous and enduring legacy for the Society. Neil Russell told us that Harold has also left a collection of the Postal History of the Isle of Wight that can be seen in Ventnor Museum. PGER 7/1/14

REPORT ON THE LONDON MEETING OF 7TH DECEMBER A small but select band of seven members gathered at the Royal for our annual Christmas Saturday meeting. We were pleased to welcome Andrew Mortlock, in transit from the USA to his home in Cheshire. So that he could catch his train, Andrew went first beginning with the ‘universal’ 9d design, actually only adopted by Queensland and NSW. Only 3 examples of the 1st watermark are know and only 3 Queensland perf. 11. Naturally we saw both. He followed with The Victoria Fergusson and Mitchell 1d stamps of 1886/90 and Victoria pre-UPU Registered envelopes – very few are known used. Finally he showed some Victoria Official mail, including one of two recorded 1905 envelopes. Tom Gillespie showed Western Australia forgeries, Beer Duty Stamps and a forged Black Swan essay. Tony Finlayson told us that there was concern in WWI that mail was getting lost. He showed a selection of privately printed postcards, letter cards and lettersheets with skeleton addresses. This included some very scarce material with some items being the only examples recorded. There is no information on numbers printed. Neil Russell had brought a selection of flown military mail. Airmail Letter Crds were produced for the Middle East, New Guinea and Malaya. These were first issued in 1933, and Australian issues came out in 1941. There were four types printed in the Middle East, some of which were used in North Africa. All four types were shown. Both types of Christmas issue were also shown. The Malaya issues were overprinted ‘Postage Paid Johore 12c’ and are very scarce. Some letter cards were borrowed from the Indian forces and amended and we saw one with a 12c stamp affixed (possibly unique?). The first New Guinea issue was made in 1942, overprinted Postage Paid 1d. There were two types, with the second being issued by the Australian Comforts Fund After a break, John Crowe showed the second QEII set issued 1955-57. The values were 1/0½d (Registered Rate), 10d (Certified Mail/Air Letter rate), 4½d (Letter rate), 7½d (Foreign Surface Rate) and 1/7d (Foreign Registered Rate. Alan Cross showed a range of Postage Dues, including Monograms and Imprints and blocks with varieties. As a light relief, he showed a range of Poster Stamps, and finished with a study of 1/- value Plate Flaws. Finally, Patrick Reid showed South Australia outgoing mail tax marks from 1891 to 1965, including some very scarce marks and finally a recent discovery of a 20 centime tax mark from Albany WA and a WA cover taxed 462/3 centimes, with manuscript over-writing of the 131/3 centime mark (second example recorded. Patrick Reid thanked all who had brought such a varied range of material that had successfully occupied us all for the whole afternoon. The evening was brought to a close with the usual convivial Fish & Chip supper at the King’s Head. REPORT ON THE LONDON MEETING OF 8TH JANUARY 2014 This was a very select gathering. We were especially pleased to welcome Rod Spencer from Worcestershire, ‘minded’ by his son Andrew, to their first meeting. What a shame it was that so few others turned up. There were four other members and apologies from the President and two others. Rod showed us a fine selection of Victoria, opening with some Melbourne cancels and a ‘Maiden’s Punt’ cancel, followed by duplex cancels on stamp, a range of Geelong material , some 6d Woodblocks and finally a range of Barred ovals. Tony Finlayson had brought a range of WWI Hospital-related material, and referred us to the ‘Digger Diaries’ for interesting reading. There was a cover from ‘The Staghorn’, at Southport (north of Brisbane)

and PPCs of other hospitals. He had a cover cancelled at #21 Auxiliary Hospital, but despite research he has been unable to determine where it was at the time. After material from hospitals in Egypt and some telegrams that had been sent home, he shoed us a selection from the Laricourt-Harris correspondence. This included censor marks within censor marks and a Lettercard with eight views of Harefield (Hospital as now is) and finally a letter from a hospital in Brighton (UK) used by the Australians. Patrick Reid shoed a selection of Western Australia tax marks applied to outgoing mail, commenting that he was sure he had some material to fill the gaps in his shoe box of covers. He did however show the only two recorded covers with outgoing Tax marks applied at Albany. Finally John Booker showed a 1929 Airmail cover to Cambridge (UK) that provoked some discussion about what had happened to it. In the end there was consensus that it had been underpaid and sent by surface, then hand carried to Ireland and posted back to Australia correctly prepaid. Patrick Reid thanked all who had come (and braved the floods that had disrupted some rail services).
