April Dress Down Days

Dress Down Day coupons for the month of April are on sale!

There are three assigned dress down days each month. The

cost remains the same, $5.00 for the three coupons. April’s

dress down days are: Tuesday, April 12, Wednesday,

April 20th and Tuesday, April 27th.

If you would like to purchase Dress Down Day Coupons for

the month of April, please send $5.00 in an envelope marked

“Dress Down Days.” Please indicate the student’s name,

grade, and homeroom number.

2016 Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair Results

How PROUD are we of our St. Mary's Middle School Science Students? Words cannot express how

proud that we are. Our students conducted themselves with poise, enthusiasm and confidence as

they defended their investigations. This event hosted over 1100 students from 100 schools across 23

counties. When you think about the odds of our students winning anything at all, you may think it

may be impossible. Well, here are the results:

6th Grade:

Emma Bradley: Recognition Award from Alcoa Company.

Grace Gralewski: 3rd Place Category Award in the Junior Category in Physical Science. Grace

competed against over 120 projects in this category.

7th Grade:

Sam Little: 3rd Place Category Award in Intermediate Physics. Sam competed against over 90

projects in this category. Sam will receive a monetary award and a certificate.

8th Grade:

Julia Matschener: Recipient of the U.S. Metric Association for the best ude of the SI system. Julia also

received a Perseverance trophy for competing in PRSEF for three consecutive years.

Olivia Schoppen: Received a 4th place award for her project in the Health and Medicine Category.

Olivia will receive a monetary award and a certificate. Olivia competed against over 50 projects in

her category. Olivia also received a perseverance trophy for competing in PRSEF for three

consecutive years.

Sarah Watson: Received three sponsored awards for 50.00 each. Sarah received the Spectroscopy

Society of Pittsburgh award which will be given to her at a dinner held in her honor in May and a

medal. Sarah received money and a medal from Young Women in Biology, and Sarah also received

money and a medal from the United States Steel Corporation. In addition to these awards, Sarah

received a 3rd place category award in her category which was Health and Medicine. She will

receive a monetary award and a certificate. She competed against over 50 projects in this

category. Sarah also received a perseverance trophy for competing in PRSEF for three consecutive years.

Emily Mullen: Received two Affiliated Sponsor Awards. The first was from the Society of InVitro

Biology and the second was from the U.S. Navy. Emily also received a FIRST PLACE in her category of

Biology. She will receive a monetary award and a certificate. Emily competed against over 60

projects in Biology. Emily's project will be on display at the Carnegie Science Center for the next few

weeks. Emily also received a perseverance trophy for competing in PRSEF for three consecutive

years.

Payton Roblaski: Payton received a monetary award and a certificate form the ASM Materials

Education Foundation. She also received a monetary award and a dinner in her honor in May from

the Society for Analytical Chemists. Payton also received a Perseverance Trophy for participating in

this Science Fair for three consecutive years.

ST. MARY’S TEACHER RECEIVES

NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

TO ATTEND THE NATIONAL CONVENTION

St. Mary’s teacher, Mrs. Lynne Mroz gladly accepted the National Science Teacher Association

Scholarship this year to attend the National Convention last week in Nashville, TN. Along with

over 30,000 teachers, Mrs. Mroz and 2 other teachers (Lisa Stough, OLMBS, and Betsy Kilmeyer

(St. Bede) attended workshops, meetings, forums, classes, and exhibits to collaborate, learn, and

share best Science practices focusing on STEM /STEAM criteria, inquiry science instruction, and

current trends and standards on a national and global level. Mr. Mark Krotec (Central Catholic

Instructor) has been spearheading the grant through local donations from various benefactors.

Mrs. Mroz and other attendees will meet in the summer to share and plan ideas and lessons

learned. Lesson summaries and transcripts are catalogued, recorded and evaluated for relevancy

to supplement the current Pittsburgh Diocese Science Curriculum. Mrs. Mroz will then teach

diocesan teachers the science concepts and lessons learned through a Share-a-Thon sponsored by

the Diocese of Pittsburgh ---offered to teachers in the fall.

“It’s always motivating and rejuvenating to learn from other teachers, but to learn from the

best and brightest minds throughout the country was overwhelming-yet exhilarating. It was so

much fun to be surrounded by elementary, middle school, high school and secondary educators

(& administrators) who are passionate about all science concepts --- from Bill Nye’s goal of

deflecting an asteroid to the Ornithological Society eager to catalog backyard birds----- excellent

science instruction is not only important, but a vital and urgent necessity in order to compete on

a global level. I hope to excite every student I teach to ask ‘what if’, to build and engineer new

creations, to take risks, and to care about the world we live in… I want my Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Math passions to be contagious.”

Thanks to everyone who attended this week’s meeting. We have a lot of plans for the end of the

year so please take a look at the meeting minutes and get back to us with any questions.

This is IT!!!! It is officially ONE WEEK until our biggest fundraiser of the year. The Totally 80’s Party is

HERE!!!! This was the last day to turn in forms to reserve tickets. If for some reason you did not get

your form in today, please email Marina ASAP if you would still like to attend. We are looking

forward to an amazing night.

Do your kids need some books to keep them busy over the summer? The spring Scholastic Book Fair

is also coming up quickly. The Family Preview Night is Tuesday, April 19 from 2:30 pm- 5:30pm. The

fair will run Wednesday, April 20 through Thursday, April 21 during school hours. Please see the

attached flyer for the times each class will attend. All parents should have received the email from

SignUpGenius to sign up to volunteer at the fair. Please consider volunteering a few hours of your

time to help make this event a success. PLEASE NOTE THAT BOOKS BOUGHT AT THE BOOK FAIR WILL

NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED TAX EXEMPT!!!!! THEREFORE WHEN YOUR CHILD BRINGS IN MONEY FOR

THE FAIR, REMEMBER THAT A 7% SALES TAX WILL BE ADDED ON TO ALL PURCHASES.

SAVE THE DATE!!!! Friday, May 20 is Family Fun Night. This PTG/SMAA event is a FREE night open to all

school families as well as any new families that have enrolled in the school. Plans are currently in

the works with regard to food, entertainment and FUN. So mark your calendars.

Remember that Bulb and Plant Sales forms are due back to office by Friday, April 22. Although it has

been on the colder side, plants do not ship until it is time for them to be planted. This is a great way

to get your gardens ready for summer.

I. Old Business

a. Totally 80's Update

The last day to purchase tickets is Friday, April 8.

Ticket sales are great!

Thanks to sponsors and so many donated items we are already at a profit of $1600 and that is even after paying for all of the meals.

During the evening there will be a Silent Auction, Chinese Auction, TV Raffle, Mystery Box, Selfie Booth, Gaming Center, Money Wheel, dinner and all you can drink beer and wine.

This event is really going to help us raise money for teacher's wish lists and school improvements.

An idea was suggested to purchase a 3D printer for the school with funds raised at the 80's party. Mrs. Riegelnegg looked into it and found that many of the schools that have a 3D printer don't really implement it into the curriculum. Our students would probably enjoy a hands on science program like the Mad Science one more than having a 3D printer.

b. Book Fair

Starts next week and we still need a few volunteers.

Sales tax is now required on all book purchases.

c. Yummy Island at the Church Festival

We will need many parent volunteers for this. Mrs. R and Fr Tim are allowing parents to earn assessment hours for volunteering their time at the the Yummy Island. Since finding people to stay to clean up is the most difficult position to fill double credit hours will be given for volunteering during the last hour of the festival.

The Knights of Columbus will be grilling and preparing the food. We will reach out to them to see what else we can to do help.

d. Bulb Fundraiser

It's doing well! There is still time to get your orders in.

I. New Business

a. Family Fun Night

This will be on Friday, May 20th in Marian Hall.

PTG and SMAA will be sponsoring this event together. This is for school families and families who have enrolled to start next year.

For food we are going to order pizza. Mrs. R suggested looking into Rita's Italian Ice bringing dessert.

We need to think of fun activities and games.

Giggles the clown can come and do Face Painting, Balloon animals and a magic show.

b. Talent Show

Lisa Genton is going to work on this with the help of Mary Theresa Watson.

c. Field Day (Formerly R&R day)

Mrs. R is going to look at a calendar and set a date.

The Treat and Prize Patrol truck is going to come at the end to hand out treats.

All day fun with games and activities.

We will need volunteers. There is $200 in the budget for this.

d. Teacher Appreciation Lunch

Since there are no more half days a lunch would be difficult to coordinate. We are going to concentrate on our Teacher Appreciation Lunch before school starts.

e. Restaurant Nights

Should we do 1 more? Maybe Emiliano's?

We still need to talk to Casey's Restaurant because we didn't get a check from them.

f. SMAA 50th Anniversary Party

Next year is the 50th Anniversary of the SMAA. They are going to plan a BIG and exciting event in September. This would be our big school fundraiser for the year.

The plan is to bring back as many alumni as we can to this event.

More information will be coming and a planning committee is being formed.

SCRIP CORNER

Assessment reports were sent home with your youngest child this

week. Please take note if you have a balance due to send in your

payment by April 22nd. If you have a split credit, send back the form and

let us know if you want the credit applied to next year’s assessment or

tuition. Remember the money collected through assessment is used in

conjunction with tuition to fund the operating budget of the school and is

essential to the success of our educational program.

We have a limited supply of Bruster’s Ice Cream gift cards left. They will

no longer be available when the supply runs out.

Shoparoo!

Do you have an I-Phone or an Andriod? Are you interested in an easy way to earn

money for our school where you do not have to buy, sell, or donate anything? Then

Hello St Mary’s School,

Help set a Guinness World Record in Patriotism and here’s how you could be part of history!!

Guinness World Records attempt for “The Most letters of support and

appreciation sent to military personnel collected in one month” The DAR must

collect and then mail at least 10,000 letters to active duty service members in

one month’s time.

Myself, Emma Holtz, an 8th grader here at St Mary’s and every student, parent and extended

family member with St Mary’s school will help the DAR and the C.A.R show our gratitude to our men

and women serving in the USA military all over the world.

This all we have to do

1. Write a hand written note, either a letter or card. No full names or personal information please.

Every letter must have 3 components a) a greeting (e.g. Dear Soldier); b) and original

message of support/appreciation; and c) a closing (e.g. love, Thanks, sincerely) and a

signature to qualify.

2. Place the letter in an UNSEALED envelope (St Mary’s return address to be used)

3. Place a 49-cent First Class U.S. postage stamp on the envelope

4. Your teachers will collect the letters, or submit them to St Mary’s school.

5. Send all the letters through the school or classrooms to, Emma Holtz grade 8-1

I will be collecting the finished letters the entire month of April.

All letters MUST to be given to me, Emma Holtz 8-1, by April 29th.

Thank you for your help…..I look forward to hand delivering the bundled letters to Carol Downey

Fuller, the Regent of the DAR Kushkushkee Trail Chapter at the DAR’s monthly meeting in May held at

Wildwood Country Club in Allison Park PA. Mrs. Downey will hand deliver them at the Continental

Congress in Washington DC, held in June 2016. I am currently submitting my application to the C.A.R

to join The National Society of the Children of the American Revolution, I indeed, have proven to have two American

Revolutionary patriot soldiers in my family lineage and look forward to full participation in the C.A.R.

My mother will be confirmed as a full member in the DAR in the coming weeks.

Dear St. Mary of the Assumption School Volunteer,

New amendments to the Child Protective Service Law took effect on April 22, 2015 and July 1, 2015 in Pennsylvania.

These amendments establish important requirements for those who work with children in reporting suspected child abuse.

The amendments also make failure to report child abuse a crime.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is mandating that all persons who volunteer, having contact with children, complete the course:

Mandated Reporter Training.

This training is found on the Diocese of Pittsburgh website: diopitt.org

Please scroll down the left hand side of the home page, under Protecting God’s Children.

Find “Online Training for Mandated Reporters of Child Abuse.” Open that site.

Go to the top of the page, click on “Registration” and follow the instructions.

When you have completed the course, please print out the certificate and forward that certificate to my attention.

The diocese has scheduled two live Mandated Reporter Training sessions (that would be an option in addition to

the online MRT) at O’Connor Hall at the Seminary (2900 Noblestown Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15205). One is

being held Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. The other is being held Thursday, May 12,

2016 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Registration for these sessions will be through Signup Genius and each
