From Charlotte Morris, Principal  Today Is World Kindness Day! The best-selling book, Random Acts of Kindness, helped to start a movement that has spread around the world. The book, and the many books on kindness that followed, helped to highlight the transformative power that each of us has to change the world with kindness, one person at a time.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation helps to promote "kindness" by providing inspiration, information, and resources to celebrate kindness throughout the year as well as a special World Kindness Day on November 13, World Kindness Week in November, and a Random Acts of Kindness Week in February. Others celebrate the first of every month as Kindness Day. Through these special days, we rededicate ourselves to change the world, one act of kindness at a time. Together we help to create a more peaceful, just and sustainable world through kindness.

As I spoke to students at Morning Meeting, I talked about doing something daily, not just on a day noted as a special day of kindness. Ideas that students shared include: helping someone without being told, picking up trash, being honest and telling the truth when some-thing happens and sharing. In addition, Mrs. Myers complimented everyone for their audience behavior. Then she led everyone in the Trillium Creek version of the Make New Friends song.

As a school community it would be wonderful if everyone intentionally did something kind.

DO ONE THING FOR A BETTER WORLD 1. Find out more about the power of kindness 2. Make an effort to use kind words 3. Try to perform an act of kindness each day 4. Organize or participate in a community service or awareness-building event or activity on World Kindness Day

WINTER CRAFT FAIR The Winter Craft fair is a fun after school Trillium Tradition where students pay $15 to come to the gym after school and create up to 10 crafts that they can take home and share, give away, or keep for themselves during the holidays. After crafts dry overnight and are specially wrapped by parent volunteers, students take them home on Friday the 5th. This PTA sponsored event is on Wednesday, December 3rd from 2:15-3:45. It is open to all grade levels. Log onto www.trilliumcreekpta.org and click on the Winter Craft Fair Event to register. *Note: Kindergarten families: please enter a "0" for grade level on the registration form. Space is limited to the first 150 registrants. Limited number of scholarships available, please contact the office. Make sure to send a small snack for your student to eat after school. After registration you will receive a confirmation email receipt that you are enrolled. The Winter Craft Fair is in need of empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls for their event. Please help by dropping empty rolls off to the bin in the front office. We need several parents to assist with this event. No craft experience needed, just a fun and festive spirit! Forest 'Flyers' Take Flight Next Week We are still looking for volunteers to help our Forest 'Flyers' with their turkey-earning trots next week. Please sign up to help count laps or distribute charms Tuesday, November 18 through Friday, November 21. Please get your Flyer ready by sending them to school in good walking/running shoes Tuesday through Thursday and remind them to bring their charm necklace on Friday. Only kids who are participating for the first time this month will be given a new necklace. Thank you again for supporting this program and your Forest ‘Flyer’!

A Vitamix to Prepare Food for Tasting Composting Pick‐up Charges Plants and Seedlings New Soil and Upkeep for the Garden Beds Tools as Needed Irrigation System for One of the Rooftop Gardens and, A Greenhouse and other items as we grow our garden...

How can I contribute to the garden of Giving? This fall, we are offering the opportunity to purchase a stone that will be engraved with your family or child's name and then placed in our Garden of Giving.  If you are interested in seeing a sample of one of the stones from Stone Creations Northwest, stop by the school office. The stones vary by size and cost.  If you are interested in ordering a stone, fill out the attached order form and return it to the school office with your check by Monday, December 15, 2014.  Make checks payable to Trillium Creek Primary School Garden of Giving.

Trillium’s Battle of the Books                                                  This is Trillium’s second year of              participation in the voluntary statewide program known as Oregon Battle of the Books. OBOB’s mission is “to encourage and   recognize students who enjoy     reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning  and teamwork among    students.”  OBOB teams work together to read 16 selected OBOB titles.  The annual list of OBOB books is comprised of titles that represent a variety of subject matter, across various genre  and difficulty   levels.  After reading the books, teams play in trivia game “battles”.  This year, Trillium teams will each participate in two school‐level battles.  The highest scoring teams from these battles will participate in a final match to determine which team will    represent Trillium at the regional OBOB competition at Boones Ferry Primary School on Saturday, March 7th.  One of the         approximately 60 teams from that tournament will have the    opportunity to participate in the statewide competition.  Fourth and Fifth grade students have been introduced to OBOB in library classes and have been given the opportunity to take home an informational brochure along with a permission slip for       participation.  Interested students need to form teams with four members and confirm a  parent coach  for their team.  Each team must have a parent coach in order to participate.  Coaches do not need prior experience in order to lead a team.  OBOB permission slips are due to Mrs. Koenig in the library by Friday, November 14th.   There will be an informational meeting for coaches on Wednesday, November 19th at 2:25 in the library.  School level battles will be held in February.  A battle schedule  will be created and sent out once team sign‐ups are complete.  We encourage students to find some teammates and participate in this exciting literary experience.  Students who aren’t            interested in joining a team may still enjoy reading titles from   the recommended book list and discussing these books with their friends.

Lockout Drill  Dear Trillium Creek Families, Today our school  conducted a  lockout drill,  reviewing  routines for securing our school in the event it was necessary to lock all doors  to  our  school  during  school  hours  and  to  keep  anyone from  entering.    Our  District  and  Trillium  Creek  staff  reviewed and planned for the procedures to support children and all who were in the building during this drill.  Our goal was to minimize the  disruption  to  children’s  learning  and  avoid  creating  undue concern,  while  simultaneously  providing  practice  for  staff,     students, visitors, and volunteers.    During Morning Meeting on Monday, I explained why we would conduct  a  lockout  drill.    During  the  week  then,  classroom    teachers  used  the  following  language  to  reinforce  the            information to children.  They also practiced what to do prior to today’s drill.

There are different ways we practice being safe in school.  We plan for fire, earthquakes and bad weather.  We also respond when people make unsafe choices.  These people may be in the neighborhood or in our school.  We have plans to make sure everyone in our school is safe.  Today, we are going to practice what to do if the school

learns about an unsafe situation near our school and we need to lock our school doors so all are safe inside.

The  safety  of  our  children,  staff,  and  volunteers  is  our  most     important priority.  We care deeply that each child feels safe, and is safe, at school.  It is possible your child will want to talk about the drill we had today, or he or she won’t seem to remember it, or anything in between…the wonder of children!  We know you are  the  best  person  to  gauge  your  child’s  need  and  support     accordingly.   At  the  same  time, please  feel  free  to  call  or  email me if you have any questions or concerns.  Please know that  in  the event of a  real emergency, we will not release your child to any adult unless you have authorized them as  an  emergency  contact  person  on  your  child’s  student          verification  form.    Please  update  this  form  as  information changes throughout the school year.  I  am  including  the  link  to  a  resource  I  sent  with  previous      newsletters  that  may  be  helpful  to  you  in  thinking  about         follow‐up conversations with your children. http://www.nasponline.org/resources/handouts/revisedPDFs/talkingviolence.pdf  Sincerely,  Charlotte Morris

Grow Our Garden of Giving! What is the Garden of Giving? We are fortunate that we have three learning gardens for students to integrate their learning of reading, writing, mathematics, and science through observations and investigations in a place based educational approach. Currently, the main learning garden in the front of the school is cared for by our kindergarten, first and second graders. We also have two rooftop gardens, one planted with native plants seen on the Oregon Trail and the other planted with kale. With care our learning gardens give us gifts of flowers and vegetables. This fall we enjoyed the sunflowers displayed in our office and students had the opportunity to taste tomato soup and green beans made from the vegetables grown in our learning gardens. Kale smoothies are next!

What is needed to continue growing the experiences around our learning gardens? We have identified items and activities that would support the goals of our learning gardens and our focus on sustainability. These include funds for:

A Vitamix to Prepare Food for Tasting Green House Composting Pick-up Charges Plants and Seedlings New Soil and Upkeep for the Garden Beds Tools as Needed Irrigation System for One of the Rooftop Gardens and, Other items as we grow our garden...

How can I contribute to the garden of Giving? School Closure Information and FAQ’s

Upon occasion schools in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District may be closed due to inclement weather or other emergency situations that cannot be foreseen until conditions are known. In these cases, the Superintendent, in coordination with District Operations, First Student Transportation Services and School Principals, monitors the situation and makes the official call to close, delay or cause early release of students. Under these conditions an official announcement is posted on the regional FlashAlert System notifying patrons and area news organizations of the decision.

Please review the following Frequently Asked Questions regarding school closures and severe weather conditions. If further information is needed, feel free to contact the Office of the Superintendent at 503-673-7034 or Department of Operations at 503-673-7995.

Q: How does the District notify the public regarding information around school closures?

A: The District uses the FlashAlert system to notify the public of emergencies. The FlashAlert system connects directly into the local news agencies to update their live feeds. Local TV stations, many local radio stations, and their associated websites have feeds of this information. We also post a notification that can be viewed on our district website. Any of these sources will provide current information. The FlashAlert system also allows individuals to subscribe to alerts via e-mail or text. Subscribe to this free service to receive alerts: www.flashalert.net/news.html?id=19

Q: What causes closures, late starts or early releases?

A: The most common causes of closures and delays are severe weather and power outages, though other causes may force closure in rare situations.

Q: When and how are decisions made around closures, late starts or early releases?

A: The decisions are usually made early in the morning before any buses start their first routes. This allows the District to hold classes in the event that conditions improve. Discussions between the bus company, District Operations and the Office of the Superintendent influence the decisions made. The final decision is made by the District Superintendent.

Q: There is no sign of severe weather at home, why is school cancelled or delayed?

A: The District is a large geographic area. Even individual school boundary areas have a wide range of elevation, and may experience a variety of weather conditions. In the case of snow closure, District policy is to close all schools in the District due to difficulties scheduling make-up days for students and staff. Also, there may be other reasons school has been cancelled such as power outages.

Page 8: News and Events Calendar of Events · 2014-11-21 · Trillium Tweet Charlotte Morris, Principal 1025 Rosemont Road West Linn, OR 97068 503.673.7950 Volume 3, Issue 10 November 13,

Q: Roads look unsafe at home, why is school still scheduled for today?

A: The District is a large geographic area and even individual school boundary areas have a wide range of elevation, and may experience a variety of weather conditions. If conditions are deemed unsafe by parents or guardians the District supports decisions to not have their students travel in severe weather.

Q: What are snow routes, and why are they used?

A: Snow routes are restricted bus routes that reduce the number of stops. The purpose of snow routes is to avoid particularly steep slopes or hazardous conditions in order to improve student safety in severe weather. Snow routes are prepared in advance and posted on the District Website at Community -> Bus Routes: http://www.wlwv.k12.or.us/Page/94

Q: Snow routes are being used for busses. Where is snow route information shown online?

A: Snow route information is available on the District Website: http://www.wlwv.k12.or.us/Page/94

Q: Snow routes for busses were used this morning. What routes will be used this afternoon?

A: If snow routes are used in the morning, they almost always will be used in the afternoon. If the weather significantly improves during the course of the day the buses may revert back to their regular routes in the afternoon. Please check the FlashAlert message.

Q: There is a two-hour delay (late start) at my student’s school. Will there be kindergarten classes today?

A: A two-hour delay cancels both morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) kindergarten classes. All day kindergarten will be in session with the adjusted delayed two-hour start time.

Q: There is an early closure at my student’s school. Will there be kindergarten classes today?

A: Early closures cancel afternoon kindergarten, and may send morning kindergarten home early if applicable.

Q: There were school closures or delays today. Will after-school or community use activities be cancelled?
