From Waste to DieselShaping the future
Conservation of resources is an issue affecting all areas of life that is of fundamental importance for both the present and, to
an ever greater degree, the future of our consumer society.
Our philosophy
Material cycles must be closed with as little loss as possible.
The environmental compatibility of products and processes is closely associated with this issue.
Our philosophy is to meaningfully combine these issues from an economic point of view and in doing so to pave new paths.
Our philosophy (2)
Shaping the future with exemplary efficiency
while conserving the earth's resources – that's the cornerstone of our work.
Our philosophy (3)
Innovation in the region
The installation of CPD technology should create jobs with qualified know-how in the region.
At the same time, regional investments will be made in modern technology

Refuse-derived fuel (RDF)
The problem of the past as a solution for the future.
We are working to achieve this goal.
Waste management
Citizens and commercial firms expect that waste be disposed of quickly and inexpensively in an environmental-friendly manner. Sustainable usage and recycling protect the environment and
reduce the consumption of raw materials. These complex, demanding requirements of modern waste management need
experts for their fulfilment.
Benefits
The successful use of CPD for RDFs as the basic material has been demonstrated since 2003 in numerous tests. The suitability of the middle
distillate derived from the process for use in diesel engines has been repeatedly attested by independent institutes. All applications in standard
diesel engines have been successful to date without exception.
Benefits (2)
Storage capability and range of applications increased
The conversion rate for RDF is generally between 35% and 40% in reference to the dry mass. As a consequence, CPD enables significant reduction in volume while
retaining the calorific value with no loss in storability of the energy carrier. The range of applications for the energy carriers is markedly rising – for example, in
engines, turbines and burners – along with possible marketing opportunities. The calorific value of the RDF used is about 20,000 – 21,000 kJ/kg, while that of the
CPD product is 41,000 – 43,000 kJ/kg.
Benefits (3)
The CPD process as an alternative use of RDF offers the following advantages:
• No creation of dioxins and furans caused by the temperatures required in the production proces
• Processing of PVC without increased corrosion tendency due to the binding of halogens in salt
• Transfer of the energy of RDFs to storable fuel with an efficiency rate of greater than 80%
• CO2-neutral transformation process for the hydrocarbons.
Process
FactsThe CPD process applied at NEWE is a process for liquefying high-molecular substances of an organic origin.
It is a single-stage process (direct liquefication) that differs from other processes in that the liquid energy carriers are derived not as distillate but by means of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis subsequent to gasification/carbonization. Unlike other methods of direct liquefaction, CPD also does not require high pressure, high temperature or the addition of hydrogen.
Process (2)
Inspired by natureThe natural creation of oil in the earth's evolution, in which mineral catalysts convert dead organic matter, provides the basic model for the CPD process.
The extraction of oxygen causes the oxygen to be added to the atmosphere and the material that cannot be decomposed to form energy reservoirs (as oil).
Product
Carrying out the process in the range of 280°C to 360°C mainly produces middle distillates. These can be used as fuel or as basic materials for further processing.Volatile hydrocarbons are fully utilized in the thermal power station employed for generating the required electrical and thermal energy.
Materials that cannot be converted (inorganic matter), released carbon and the crystals and salts obtained by the process through catalytic or neutralizer binding are physically separated in applications by NEWE and then channelled for thermal use.
Product (2)
Proving suitability of the product for use in engines
Numerous analyses verify the suitability of the CPD product for use in engines and motors. The values of the CPD product in key parameters are greatly better than specified by the diesel standard DIN 590. For example, the CPD product often exhibits considerably greater cetane ratings (ignition quality) and better CFPP values (low-temperature durability).
In view of this, the objective of NEWE is to use the product for motor-driven applications in thermal power stations or in vehicles.
