Handbagged designer Richard Kent talks about the challenge of putting the power-brokering, power-dressing 1980s on stage. What was the greatest challenge in coming up with the set design for Handbagged? The biggest challenge designing Handbagged was that the play is not written with any specific setting. You understand that the meetings between the Queen and Mrs Thatcher are taking place at Buckingham Palace but that setting isn’t visually necessary to tell the story; in fact I think it would be a hindrance. At my first discussion with Indhu and Moira, they both had ideas about how the design could take shape. Moira wanted to feel like we were still in the theatre – there are numerous times when the ‘fourth wall’ is broken. And Indhu liked the idea of something as simple as a white box, but without the trappings of that kind of design. These two women famously dress to stand out in a crowd, therefore a set that could support attentions of not only one coupling but two had to be something clear and concise. I looked at classic images we would associate with both these women and the Union flag jumped out as an obvious icon for all they stood for. I wanted to give the design some architectural grounding, and after seeing a very bold image of the Palace projected with the flag during the 2012 Jubilee, I used it as inspiration to have a presence of the Palace without having to actually recreate it onstage. Hopefully what is on stage is a combination of the simplicity that Indhu was looking for and the theatrical flexibility that Moira also saw. How does Margaret Thatcher’s style contrast with the Queen’s? Are they both ‘power-dressers’? Both the Queen and Mrs Thatcher’s wardrobe choices were/are about being noticed but in very different ways. The Queen has always worn brighter colours to stand out in the many crowds she finds herself in. Mrs Thatcher, especially upon coming to power, dressed to assert her authority in a very male-dominated world. It is interesting to see that Mrs Thatcher started to adopt a wardrobe much more like the Queen’s as she got older. In the last 10-15 years of her life, her style shifted – she moved away from the power dressing of the 80s and into something much less defined by the era and more by her age. I think they share more similarities than not, if not in style but in their clothes’ deeper meaning and status; they are the ultimate powers dressers. Did their own individual styles change over time, and do their wardrobes ever reflect contemporary fashion trends? Both the Queen and Mrs Thatcher followed fashions at a younger age. As they grew older they both started to set their own styles outside of the fashion world. Mrs Thatcher embraced more of the 80s ‘power dressing’ style than the Queen but the Queen has been no stranger to daring looks herself. They have made contemporary looks work for them and ultimately I think you can equate their choices in clothing more to style than to trends or fashion. More recently, the Queen has maintained a very similar style, especially with her hair. It has slowly morphed over time without making any drastic jumps. Unlike Mrs Thatcher, the Queen has had a duty to remain a constant – something that is hard to ignore when you are the face of many currencies and stamps, not to mention countless pieces of tourist merchandise. The Queen is, for want of a better word, a ‘brand’, and her instantly recognisable style is key to that! Did your research throw up anything that surprised you? A wonderful fact that we found out when sourcing the fabrics is very telling of both their characters. Most of the fabrics we used were sourced from the same supplier to both the Queen and Mrs Thatcher. The Queen seems to have a very laid-back approach to the design and making of her clothes – she has a trusted group in her wardrobe department and lets them make many decisions on her behalf. In complete contrast, we were told Mrs Thatcher would personally come to the shop (which was opened early just for her) and liked to choose from the entire range available. I thought that was a wonderful snapshot of the way the two women worked. The Olivier Award Winner 2014 and West End Smash hit comedy Handbagged is coming to the Theatre Royal this Autumn.

Teatime TalkGuest Speaker Baron Beecham, Friday 11 September 2015, 5.30pm, Northern Counties Club, Hood Street, Newcastle.

Join us for an afternoon tea (sandwiches and scones) in the company of The Lord Beecham, a well-known and prominent figure in the North East.

He was elected as a councillor for Benwell, Newcastle, in 1967 and continues in this role today. He has in turn been leader of Newcastle City Council  and chaired both the Social Services and Finance Committee. He chaired the Local Government Association from 1995 to 2004 and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities from 1991 to 1997.
