Overview

Problems being solved SFX (Open URL Linking) MetaLib (Federated Search) EZproxy (Remote Access) Next steps Questions

Page 3: New technologies in the libraries

The problems at hand

Growth of library’s electronic resources Approximately 32,000 electronic resources Electronic resources expenditures $3.2 million 38.0% of our total collection budget

Patrons need to find known items (SFX) Discover appropriate resources (Metalib) Seamless remote access (EZproxy)

Page 4: New technologies in the libraries

What we were doing

NUcat - online library catalog ER (Electronic Resources) database Remote access

Proxy Server Proxy CGI VPN Client

Page 5: New technologies in the libraries

What we will be doing

NUcat - online library catalog SFX - item level article access MetaLib - federated search interface EZproxy and VPN - remote access

Page 6: New technologies in the libraries

What does SFX do?

FirstSearch EBSCO

OpenURL resolver

Page 7: New technologies in the libraries

How does SFX do that?

Through OpenURL A standard means for identifying content

Provides a mechanism for encoding a citation for an information resource, typically a bibliographic resource, as a URI URL DOI

Page 8: New technologies in the libraries

What can it link from and to?

OPAC (online public access catalog) Abstract/index databases Full-text databases OpenURL-enabled resources

Citations Table of contents Web forms Repositories

Page 9: New technologies in the libraries

OpenURL resolver

How does this work?

Redirection through a resolver Resolver interprets data

Digital Object Identifier (DOI) A URL encoded with metadata about the resource

http://hopper.library.northwestern.edu/sfx?genre=article&issn=0100-0293&volume=32&issue=1&spage=55&epage=76&date=2003&aulast=Gergenplotz&aufirst=Joe

Locates appropriate copies

Displays choicesCitation

metadata

Page 10: New technologies in the libraries

The schematic diagramDynamically generates an appropriate target list

Link source(citation)

Source sends OpenURL info to local OpenURL

resolver

OpenURLresolver

The OpenURL resolver analyzes the URL

OpenURL resolver looks up holdings data in its internal database

Target

Let’s take a look…

Page 12: New technologies in the libraries

SFX Screen Logic

FindIt@NU will always display in active sources

The service menu will always appear if FindIt@NU button is clicked

Answers Online will always display Downloading to RefWorks and EndNote

will always appear as an option

Page 13: New technologies in the libraries

Three screen types

When full text is available

When a print copy is available

When Interlibrary loan is the only option

Page 14: New technologies in the libraries

But…

As nice as SFX is, it is just a stop on the destination to federated searching

Page 15: New technologies in the libraries

OpenURL resolver

I think that an abstract of that article on usability testing in

Tonga was in Expanded Academic but there was no full text! I need to finish my

research today!I wonder if I can get the full

text somewhere?

Federated search answers a different type of question

I can never remember where the best place is to find articles on

usability

I know, I’ll use that new metasearch product we just

installed

Merged results list

ProQuest

FirstSearch

Where can I find information on that

usability testing research in Tonga? If I

could find those articles, my research would be complete!

EZproxy (remote access)

Vendor provided solution Replacing Proxy Server and Proxy CGI Using LDAP for identity management Using “nuSchoolAffiliations” to determine

appropriate access vs. IP address SFX and MetaLib automatically route

through EZproxy if needed.

Page 19: New technologies in the libraries

Summary

SFX provides the article resolution engine MetaLib provides the interface and engine for

federated searching EZproxy is replacing existing proxy servers

Works with SFX and MetaLib to provide seamless off-campus access

Page 20: New technologies in the libraries

Next Steps

SFX in production and is available through target resources

EZproxy is in production and is invoked when needed by applications.

MetaLib coming soon, links on library home page and ER sites

Enhanced versions of SFX/MetaLib by Winter quarter

ER phased out by next summer
