I started to look for more ways to add mini-meditation moments into my day. I found another opportunity while doing the dishes. We had no dishwasher, so while I would wash each dish I would make sure my focus was on the temperature of the water on my hands, the feel of the soap, and the water rinsing the dish. When a thought would interrupt my focus, I didn’t worry about having the thought; I simply didn’t put my focus on it. I knew that when I would get to it was when I was done with washing the dishes. After a while, I found washing the dishes to be a great way to let go of obsessing thoughts and worries. Taking a shower is another way I have found to add slightly longer meditations into my day. I can surround and wash myself with golden light, adding a protective and loving energy around me throughout the day. Inside The June Issue:

By Cindy Griffith-Bennett

After teaching meditation for 20 years, I have heard a lot of reasons why people don’t keep up with their traditional meditation practice. Even though I teach it myself, I find it hard to sit for meditation every day. There are so many “shoulds and should nots.” You should sit the same time every day. You should sit with your back straight. You should not scratch your nose when it itches. And my favorite myth: You should not have thoughts. I don’t know about you, but when someone starts telling me what I should and should not do, I tend to stop listening. I still don’t have the patience to sit still for a half hour a day, or even 15 minutes. Yet I want the positive results found in mediation and its accompanying relaxation. They have been shown to physically decrease pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, oxygen consumption and muscle tension. Mentally it produces an alpha brain wave (and even deeper waves) that heightens cognitive ability. I wanted those results, but like most people, I had a busy day and not a lot of “me time” to spend on meditating. I found myself looking for ways to get the peace and stillness while I was

Have you ever been working on a project when things weren’t going your way and you were seriously considering giving up? Maybe you thought, “The time must not be right for this.” Or, “I should have known I couldn’t do this. What was I thinking?” Or even, “This is too difficult. I’m giving up and moving on.”

It’s safe to say we’ve all thought about giving up at different times in our lives. Maybe we have given up. This article is for those who are still in the process of deciding whether or not to continue with a particular project. First of all, realize you can always give up. It isn’t always possible to start something over once you stop. Make this decision carefully. Sometimes giving up is the right thing to do. Sometimes we’ve learned all there is to learn from a situation, process, or relationship. Sometimes what we’re doing is a stepping stone and it is time to take the next step.

is a year from now, or five years from now. Talk to your future self, the one who made the right decision and who can give you guidance about the result if you continue or if you stop now. Get perspective from the long-term vision. • Let go of your story. Whether you decide to stop or to continue, let go of the indecisiveness as soon as you can. Close the door on the experience. Begin a new chapter in your life. Heck, maybe begin a new book. There’s a great article in this issue by Bente Hansen where she writes very eloquently about this idea of letting go of our stories. Take the time to read it. • Do you have a plan and are you using your tools? Unfortunately, many people I speak with don’t believe in planning and they don’t use the tools they have. Just because we’re approaching our lives from a spiritual basis doesn’t mean we don’t plan, use our intellects, and apply the many wonderful

tools we have at our disposal. It’s very challenging to go from Seattle to Miami if we just hop in our car and start driving. We need to look at a map, decide the best route to take, and be sure we have enough gas and other provisions for the journey. Whatever project you’re involved in deserves your best efforts before deciding to abandon hope of accomplishing your dreams. • Welcome challenges and obstructions. Yes, what you resist persists. By welcoming challenges you remove some of the sting they carry. Challenges are meant to make us stronger. To explain this, I like to use the analogy of someone who’s doing sports training. As they become proficient at running a mile, let’s say, they don’t stop there. Once they are comfortable running a mile, they increase the distance or decrease the time. They continue making it more and more difficult on themselves to make

Should You Give Up? Living The Good Lifeby Krysta Gibson

themselves stronger. The Olympic-winning speed skater Apollo Ono showed a training video of himself. He attached weights to his legs. He would drag these around behind him and continued making them heavier in order to make his legs stronger. So with us, instead of thinking we will have it made someday and all our troubles will be over, think about how your higher self, soul-self, adds challenges to your life in order to make you stronger for an even bigger project than the one you’re working on now. Just think, maybe your current situation is the training ground for something much bigger and your job is to master this level so you can do even more. • If you believe in what you’re doing, don’t ever give up. Don’t even think about giving up. Don’t waste your precious time and energy that way. Instead, continue focusing on the end result, trust in your inner guidance, be determined, and do everything in your power to allow your dream to unfold in whatever way is for the highest and best of everyone concerned.

Krysta has made a 20-minute MP3 audio in which she leads the listener through the process of breaking through an obstacle. Visit anoasisforyoursoul.com for this and other guided meditative journeys.

If you’re not convinced you should give up, consider these ideas.

• Declare you are starting over. We can begin a new day at any time. You don’t even have to wait for tomorrow morning. Sometimes just declaring a new beginning, shutting the door behind us firmly, is enough to kickstart us. Of course, you aren’t really starting over. You are continuing on from where you are right now and haven’t lost any ground. • Get guidance before making a decision. Talk to someone with experience in the area you’re focused on. And be sure the person has no interest in the outcome of your project. It is best to hire a professional consultant or mentor for this because they can apply their wisdom from working with many people or businesses while remaining unattached to the results of your decision. • The journey is more important than the results. Maybe whatever you’re doing is all about the journey. Maybe you aren’t meant to succeed or fail. Perhaps this is just an experience that is supposed to teach you something. Maybe this is a stepping stone to something and by being too attached to specific results you will get in the way of your own larger success. Remember what the Bhagavad Gita says: “Abandon all attachment to the results of action and attain supreme peace.” • Have a talk with yourself! Pretend it

Meditation On-The-Go After spending months reading the mystics from various traditions for my master’s thesis, I found that some of the key foundations of any spiritual practice are meditation, mindfulness, and contemplation. Almost each mystic I researched recommended meditation and its companions to the spiritual seekers looking for spiritual maturity. I found many spiritual lessons that could be taught through meditation and wrote one lesson for each meditation in Soul Soothers. For example: The Review meditation, where you review your actions for the day and rerun the things you did well in your mind while redoing the situations you would of liked to have handled better to reflect your improvements, brought up the lesson of karma. Karma is not a punishment; it is a balance. Karma helps move you to the right if you have gone too far to the left and to the left if you have journeyed too far to the right. The spiritual lesson that goes along with the “Bell” meditation is discernment vs. judgment. You can look at a situation and know that it is in alignment with your journey or not without judging it good or bad. Take the ice cream cone. It is not good or bad on its own. It simply is an ice cream cone. Yet if you eat a super-sized cone, you may find that your body first speeds up

with the sugar rush and then crashes and you cannot get through the day without a nap. Yet a small cone simply gives a slight rush and you can finish all you have on your to-do list without a glitch. Eating the super-sized cone may not align with your chore list, so you may discern that it is not the best choice for you today. It doesn’t mean ice cream is bad. As a matter of fact, there might be a day when you can share that super-sized cone with someone you love and it will have a fond place in your heart. When you fully understand the spiritual, mental, and physical benefits of meditation and are able to add up to a half hour of meditation into your day without sitting for a traditional practice, it becomes easy to start your meditation practice as soon as you put down this article. Simply sense the breath coming in and out of your body as you breathe. You have to breathe anyway, so give it a try. Don’t worry if you do it right or wrong, there is no judgment or shoulds here.

We all want to find a peaceful journey on our path in life. A peaceful journey includes an abundance of unconditional love and joy. It’s easy to practice peacefulness when we are on vacation or in nature. The challenges occur when we’re surrounded by outside circumstances that seem unjust, unloving, and unfair. This is when our peaceful journey tends to be shaken, and chaos occurs both internally and externally. In order to have a peaceful journey in life, it’s important to embrace and accept what is with compassion especially during the chaos. So let’s examine the difference between a “soap opera” lifestyle and a “peaceful path” on your journey in life. This will give you the opportunity to discover your “soap opera” lifestyle and learn ways to transform it to a more “peaceful path.” I define a soap opera lifestyle as an emotional and mental attachment to unjust,

unfair, and unhappy situations creating drama and judgment. Soap opera lifestyle occurs during the observation stage, where you analyze a part in yourself, a situation, or others where there is a lack of peace. You perceive this lack-of-peace occurrence with judgment and react with internal beliefs that could lead to hate and anger. Your focus is on the “outside world,” attempting to change the situation and/or person. There is a tendency to want to fix, transform and improve the unjust, unfair, unhappy part in yourself, with others, and in situations. This external focus will lead to a victimization and feeling of helplessness. You will become discouraged, frustrated, confused, and angry, possibly becoming mistrustful and jealous of others’ success. You could have passive/aggressive behaviors and feel you have to protect and defend yourself and/or even others. This feeling of helplessness will push you into a deprivation focus where you put your attention on what you don’t have and want. Our mind is like a computer: what we focus on expands and creates that reality. We can summarize the soap opera behavior as expecting results, which leads to trying to control the outcome, push “time” and over-doing. Trying to control the outcome, over-doing, and expecting certain results leads to conditions of want with a time limit of when and how you want it. The results are disappointments, victimization, and feeling stuck when the conditions are unmet. Many common reasons for the soap opera behavior stem from a “need” for approval, acceptance, or love, or possibly righteous and controlling beliefs. The peaceful journey is an internal serendipity with circumstances that seem unloving, unjust, and unfair. You know there

is a positive reason for this circumstance, which leads to growth, wisdom, and opportunities. Therefore, you don’t over-analyze and you apply acceptance, enjoyment, appreciation, value, trust, and faith with the unknown. You understand that if it’s important to know the reason, in time you will know. The peaceful journey begins with quieting the mind chatter, opening the heart, and applying gratitude, appreciation, and acceptance. You look inward first rather than attempt to change or fix the outside world. You let go of attempting to control situations or people and move into acceptance. From acceptance comes a greater understanding that allows you to become proactive rather than fear based. I call this spiritual hearing, where you have an awareness of your connection to Source. You choose to focus on love, knowing the more you come from your heart, the more peace, joy, and abundance you will manifest. You accept and have compassion for others, especially when there is chaos or unjust, unfair, and unloving situations. The steps for a peaceful journey are pretty simple, yet can be challenging when obstacles occur. The application for a peaceful journey begins when you hold self-love and acceptance. You value yourself and your work so others will too and you do loving things for yourself to increase self-love. When you see through

A Peaceful Path On Your Journey the eyes of love and acceptance, you hold a light of awareness, peace, joy and abundance. There is acceptance and compassion for other living things from your divine heart. Some helpful hints on staying on a peaceful journey in your path to life are as follows: •Practicemeditationstoquietthemindand connect the heart on a deeper level. •Practicebeingatpeacewiththeunknown. •Relaxthemindchatter, calmtheemotions, and surrender to having to know the answers now. •Comefromcompassionandacceptance, releasing the desire for understanding and remaining free of all attachments, especially with fears and insecurity.

I’m a great believer in group dynamics. Every time a group of people is gathered together, everybody who is needed is present. Everything that is needed by the group is present in the members of the group. All the members of the group have something unique to offer. Not all members of the group need offer their uniqueness every time, but for every need presented, somebody is present who can fulfill that need. Sometimes many people will be needed to fulfill one need. That is my definition of group dynamics and it has never let me down. So long as there’s a group, I don’t have to rely on myself or any other one person to fulfill all the needs of the group. Many years ago, consultants were brought into a company where I worked. These consultants taught that company how to run meetings efficiently with a few basic rules. Every meeting was to have these elements: an agenda, a timekeeper, a project leader, and a task tracker. The project leader’s role was to prepare an agenda, invite the people who needed to be present, reserve meeting space, and lead the meeting. The agenda had all the items to be discussed and how long to spend on each item. If an item was running over its allotted time, the timekeeper would raise their hand and ask the group for a quick decision on whether to keep talking about that point or to go

on. The task tracker would take notes and advise the group if they were going off-topic. Again, the group would decide whether or not to stay on-topic. The company set up all meetings in this manner. Different people would play different roles; roles were assigned at random, having nothing to do with people’s strengths. The meetings went well, so long as the people assigned to the roles were allowed to fulfill their roles, and so long as the meetings were kept to this format. I noticed that some people were much better task trackers than others. Some were better leaders. Some were better time keepers. When I led, if the meeting was getting contentious, I would just let somebody who was a stronger leader lead for a while, and then quietly take back the meeting from them. But what I noticed most was that there was always somebody in the meeting available and willing to fulfill each of those roles, and those people were naturally good at those roles. Sometimes those people had to be gently prodded into those roles, but so long as they were appreciated and accepted, they fulfilled those roles really well. Presiders see people’s abilities, no matter how well hidden they are. Presiders have an uncanny way of knowing what people are good at and what they would like to do, if given a chance. But people are rebellious and don’t like to be told what to do. Others are resentful when they see somebody being naturally good at something. So, many presiders become programmers or engineers. They preside over innate objects that they can control. Some become project leaders, leading all elements of a project, except the people. These project leaders may even assign people to tasks, but that assignment is based on a person’s resume, rather than their abilities. People can be good leaders, even good leaders of people without being presiders. A

presider sees who each person in a group is at the deepest level. They quietly call forth each person in the group to be their utmost self. They see the needs in their group and bring the person with the need and the person who can respond to that need together. They see the synergies in the group and bring persons together to release those synergies into the group. Often a presider will see each group they’re in as “their” group. And, it is their group to preside over, even if they are not the leader. If you were in a group with a presider, chances are, you would not know it. Presiders typically work behind the scenes. They spend a lot of time observing, but they also spend a lot of time directing the group to be the best group possible and directing people to be their utmost self. If you are a presider, I ask you to remember to sometimes preside over

people. That doesn’t mean you’re controlling them. You’re just allowing them to be who they deeply desire to be. Just remember, everybody who is needed in a group is present in a group, including those you need to help you preside. You don’t have to do it all, nor should you. You just need to do what you are called to do. If you’re not a presider, offer what you have to offer to a group. Do what you’re good it; you don’t have to do it all; nor does anybody in the group want you to. If you did, it wouldn’t really be a group.

“There can be no earth peace unless there is self-peace. And hence, we call this the Earth Peace through Self Peace Meditation, which we teach freely to all the people as and when they come to the Hamsa Yoga Sangh. This meditation is a simple and valuable contribution of our organization so that the people of the earth may live in peaceful coexistence. There are two aspects to this pathway of peace. The pathway to earth peace is the Earth Peace Meditation, and the second pathway to self-peace is through the Surya Yoga, Hamsa Yoga, Golden Lotus and Kriya Yoga meditations.” –Yogiraj Siddhanath

The Earth Peace Mudra Before we begin the Earth Peace Meditation we first connect with the spirit of humanity using the Earth Peace mudra or the Temple of Humanity. Form the Temple of Humanity (known as the Earth Peace mudra or Jagat Shanti mudra or Manav Mandir mudra) at the top of your head and allow the spiritual energy to stream into the crown chakra, and

pray:“Oh Divine, flood my body, mind, and soul with the rainbow colored light of thy love, wisdom, and truth.”

Then inhale and hum the Omm.... during which you feel the actualization of the prayer you said above and feel your body vibrating, being recharged with the pranic light and energy of the spirit. After which you bring hands to normal position. Now we begin the Earth Peace Meditation. The Earth Peace Meditation consists of two phases. The moon meditation has to be done first, followed by the sun meditation.

Moon phase Sit in a comfortable position with back straight and shoulders slightly drooping down. Fold your hands in the namaskar posture, elbows parallel to the ground. Close your eyes and visualize yourself to be the cool full moon. Imagine in front of you the earth to be the size of a globe ball. Take a slow long deep breath inhaling love, wisdom and peace through

the nostrils with mouth closed. Hold for a couple of seconds. Then exhale the breath, making the sound of “Mmmmm” with a closed mouth, radiating cool rays of love for earth peace. Simultaneously moving

your joined hands to the top of your head, forming there the diamond, then spreading the hands out in a circular motion until you come back to the navel, inverting your hands back to the namaskar posture. Repeat this process of radiating love at least three times.

Sun phase Sit in a comfortable position with back straight and shoulders slightly drooping down. Now transform yourself to be the spiritual sun. Imagine in front of you the earth to be the size of a globe ball and throw your hands up with head looking up to the sky. Repeat the below steps at least three times. Take a slow long deep breath inhaling love, wisdom, and peace through the nostrils with mouth closed. Then exhale love, making the sound of “Aaaahhh” continuously, visualizing six billion two hundred million swans (representing the six billion two hundred

The Earth Peace Meditation

The Earth Peace or Temple of Humanity mudra is formed at the top of the head touching one’s thumbs to the crown chakra (sahasrara) and pointing one’s index fingers upward toward the sky. The thumbs of the practitioner represent the disciple (shishya or soul) while the index fingers represent the guru (divine teacher or spirit).

By Hriman McGilloway

Hi! My name is Hriman. My wife, Padma, and I were appointed directors of Ananda’s work in the greater Seattle area nearly 20 years ago by our spiritual teacher (and founder of Ananda), Swami Kriyananda. At close to 87 years of age, our beloved teacher recently left his physical body after nearly 65 years of intense international travel, lecturing, writing, counseling and the founding of a worldwide network of intentional communities and meditation centers. It is natural, therefore, for us to reflect on some of the lessons we’ve learned from him and from our relationship with one whose role as spiritual teacher we honor and view as worthy of sharing. We thought perhaps others, too, might appreciate these reflections. Swamiji (as we called him) was not a “guru” in the traditional sense. He did not accept that relationship, at least as it is commonly viewed. Rather, he saw his role in relation to students as a friend, not even as a

playing the wise and all-knowing teacher. When praised he gave the credit to his guru or to God as the doer; when “blamed” he remained calmly centered, even grateful. How do you find a spiritual teacher? You don’t. Paraphrasing an oft quoted precept,

How to Work With a Spiritual Teacher

“teacher.” Until his death, he was among the few direct disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda (author of the now classic Autobiography of a Yogi) still vibrantly representing Yogananda’s teachings. I never saw him play “the guru game” of

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I met Swami Kriyananda through Padma, my wife, and she met him through a friend. This of course explains nothing at all. But in 1977, I was ready for a teacher. I had just returned from India at age 27 when I met him. He was 51. He was an American yogi and I was very full of myself. “Hah,” I said to myself. “An American yogi, eh?” So I was wary. He was intensely active, articulate, dynamic, and full of energy. He was not the Buddha-like idol I had carved in my mind. But there was something else: his humor was down-to-earth and charming, yet kindly. His eyes twinkled with joy and his smile made you feel you were at home, indeed, at the center of all there was. Swamiji possessed that characteristic that one finds in all those who live from the higher plane of the true self: integrity and grace. By this I mean that with each person and in each circumstance he responded uniquely and appropriately and creatively. Such a one is at once both impersonal and personal. Impersonal as it relates to the habit of most humans to “like” or “dislike” or to “judge” or “assess” others or circumstances in relation to one’s own convenience or preferences; and personal, because uniquely appropriate and uplifting of the circumstances or higher self of the other person(s).

As I hesitated, at first, to engage him personally, so he kept his distance, respecting my process. He displayed no need for my approval or my slurping up his every word. I was struck by his centeredness. He didn’t seem to “need” anything from anyone. And yet, he gave to everyone his infectious joy and his genuine interest in their own highest potential. You can’t hide things like that. Not day-after-day, year-after-year. I think one should look for this trait in a spiritual teacher. I’ve seen others, even well-known teachers, courting disciples, even attempting to wean students away from other teachers like a CEO vying for market share. Over the years, my wife and I would travel with, visit with, or host Swamiji at our home. My wife worked as his publisher during some of his most intensely creatively periods (he wrote 150 books in his lifetime,

which are published in 32 languages). I worked with him in various community leadership roles, including that of overseeing Ananda’s financial well-being (a euphemism, merely, we were strapped at the time). Whether in the car, in our living room and even once in the hospital, I was with him alone many times. Though he spoke casually and naturally on a wide range of subjects, his was a dignity which didn’t invite a back-slapping form of familiarity. In his presence, it was natural to remain silent when there was no obvious need for conversation. Indeed, being comfortable with silence in the presence of one’s teacher is, I feel, essential because in this way one can draw the deeper benefits of his or her vibration and consciousness.

Visiting him at his home in Gurgaon (south of New Delhi), India while writing a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita (recalling from memory the words of Yogananda), he was in bliss. We were sitting in the living room and every so often he’d come bounding down the stairs with a fistful of printed pages – hot off the press – for us to read. This book, Essence of the Bhagavad Gita, is his most inspired writing, apart, perhaps, from his own autobiography, the New Path (which includes countless stories of his years with Yogananda).

This element of joy and enthusiasm is surely a quality one would find in a true teacher. Neither my wife nor I possessed the habit of running to him at every turn for personal counsel. Once, in Rome, I felt to express to Swamiji that I had the need for a change of direction. He said very little. Months later, he directed me towards teaching and the ministry: a role which, since childhood, I had known suited me, but which I had never disclosed to him or anyone else. I measured therefore his response against my own inner counsel and found it to be resonant. This is crucial if the student

is to awaken to his or her inner “guru,” the soul. Do not slavishly rely upon the advice of another. An inner harmony should be felt even when the idea is expressed by one’s teacher. When once asked, “What is the best yoga posture?”Kriyananda replied: “That which helps you stand on your own two feet!” At his feet, now gone from my sight, I bow; for he has lifted me up.

If I were to ask every reader what either word means to them, I can imagine that we would have a variety of responses, like “don’t each too much sugar or fat,” which would lead us down another path of questioning of what is too much of each of those dietary components, and what type of sugar and what type of fat. It would seem that these are simply relative terms that don’t seem to mean a whole lot when we try to distill the meaning to the individual. Yet, we hear these terms sprinkled throughout books and websites on food and nutrition. There are a variety of ways to capture the element of balance in our eating, and it may involve not just the what, but also the how. Personally, I like how traditional Chinese medicine has brought pivotal concepts like yin and yang to the forefront in healing. What would it look like if we were yang in our eating? How would yin show up in our meals? The beauty is that we embody yin and yang; we just need to be able to recognize when we’ve veered to one side or another and to harness them in ways that make us vital and healthy. The yang (masculine force) represents being absolute, direct, linear, objective, scientific, outward-directed, methodical, and practical. It is the voice of logic and reason. Think of a sun shining brightly, radiating outward; this image might be viewed as the epitome of yang energy, fueling growth and action with its undying life-giving warmth and brilliance. The yin (feminine force) of our being symbolizes the opposite side of these qualities: being passive, circular, creative, chaotic, subjective, spiritual, ethereal, contemplative, and emotional. It is the whisper of mystery and the mystical. If yang is the sun, the yin in us is like the moon; cool, nourishing, soothing, soft and gentle, navigating the emotional tides within.

Of course, both yin and yang need to show up in our daily meals if we truly want to master the teeter-totter of balance. By examining how and what you are eating, you can get a sense as to whether your yin-yang aspects are in harmony. Within

the context of food, a healthy yang aspect reflects a connection

with strong digestion, robust metabolism, a

hearty sense of hunger and satiety, and eating according to the body’s need. The yang principle thrives off of instinct, or listening to the direction and signals of the body. However, in

an imbalanced state, the yang aspect could

manifest as directing instead of being directed

by over-intellectualizing food; dissecting it to calories,

grams, and endless deciphering of ingredients; eating too fast; indigestion; overeating; taking in too much information; and eating large amounts of protein, especially animal protein. Similarly, the yin aspect of eating shows up through honoring the beauty and poetry of foods; relishing the creativity in food preparation; connecting to the cool, moist soil through gardening; and feeling the nourishing qualities of food by tapping into sensual properties relating to eating such as taste, touch, smell, and sight. The yin inclination is to follow intuition, or being guided through one’s sense of experience and knowingness. The converse of an imbalanced yin state could unfold as over-emotionalizing food, connecting it to fear, anger, worry, sadness; eating copious amounts of fat (or fearing eating fat); avoidance of issues through food; neglecting what one knows deep within; and using food to show love to self and

Have you ever heard phrases like, “eat everything in moderation,” or “eat a balanced diet”? I’ve always found them interesting because when you start to think about what these statements mean, you begin to realize that there is no set definition on what “moderation” is or what “balance” truly means. It could mean five chocolate chip cookies a day instead of 10, and to someone else, it could imply a few chocolate chip cookies every month.

be nice skill atop the cold Himalayan mountains, but operates as a much more than that. It happens to exemplify the very reason for meditation. A major part of the process serves as a potent component toward self-development, one that Tibetan Buddhists and your average Joe on the street can readily identify with and immediately benefit from. The meditative aspect so clearly illustrated in Tummo and suggested in many other practices is to imagine clearing all emotions and thoughts to the point of being hollow save one small flame. On being hollow and clear of all the emotions and thoughts one can harness the energy it took to create and deal with the emotions and thoughts and transform the energy into the inner fire of Tummo, for even just a portion of the energy required for feeling and thinking is enough to create the inner fire when applied correctly. This meditative concept reflects our physical and meditative powers, but also of an exercise in thinking that could truly save us from ourselves.

Human beings are always asking, “Why?” We ask why so much that we conjure beliefs and act on them as if total truth. We ask why so much that we come up with answers to questions on figments to a series of why questions. We ask why so much that our minds are often crowded by answers or beliefs to why questions that no one asked but ourselves and about things which never happened. The reason we can’t see the forest through the trees is because of all our beliefs. Our beliefs, which come

others. Where are you on your yin-yang continuum when it comes to food and eating? In my eating past, I could certainly be at both extremes at different times; sometimes I found myself in a state of “analysis-paralysis,” obsessively reading food labels and watching everything going into my body (especially during graduate school when I was actively studying nutrition), while other times, I could easy cave in to eating for emotional reasons. By becoming aware of the yin-yang energies within and getting a read of where I was, I noticed that I could regulate my appetite and be more satisfied with what I was eating. When I felt driven and stressed, I tried to allow the flower of my feminine nature to blossom

and soothe me with silence and relaxed eating. When I was riding an emotional rollercoaster, I focused on tuning into my body rather than being lost in the “noise” of my feelings, like trying to get away from static on the radio to a station where you like the music. Ideas to try to strike the yin-yang balance with eating: If you are too yang, allow your yin to come to the rescue and surrender to the beauty of a well-prepared, savory meal. Keep a windowsill herb garden if you have no time to garden outside. Cultivate nourishment in every aspect of your life: the people you eat with, the time you give to self-care practices and meditative eating. If you are too yin, spring into action. Start to let those emotions flow through physical movement: dance,

walking, riding a bike in nature. Get to know your body through your intuitive sense. Learn some new facts about foods you are intrigued with, and try out a new food every week. Finding your yin-yang balance through your eating can help bring you into a place of peace in your relationship with food. And, if you believe like I do that how you eat is how you live, and vice versa, peaceful eating may translate into more peaceful living, too

Isolation. Retreat. Quiet solace in a meditative moment. And for what? One idea behind the ancient Tibetan practice of Tummo reveals exactly why: in order to be hollow and empty of energy-taxing emotions and thoughts, to be clear. The process of Tummo ends in the physical production of heat. Tummo leads to the physically overcoming the conditions of temperature. This happens to

Change Your Thinking, Change the Worldand go as the leaves on trees, are not true root or trunk or being. Just as trees let go of their leaves people have to let go of beliefs every so often too. If we let go of emotions and thoughts for just a bit we can settle into our true nature and ignore our beliefs, beliefs which often hinder our true

potential. Let go like in Tummo so as to be like the tree, not the leaf. Every time you find yourself asking why, questions concerning beliefs and figments, stop and change the beliefs into clarity and being as centered and balanced as a tree and change the world by changing your thinking.

The sixth major energy center in the body is located at the point between the eyebrows and is often referred to as the third eye. The third eye is associated with intuition; its key aspects are light and sound. When we “see the light” or “hear our inner voice,” that’s intuition. Learning to trust what you see and hear happens when you develop a strong sense of self. Without a high sense of self – more specifically, self-esteem – we tend to second-guess ourselves. With a high sense of self-esteem, on the other hand, we are better positioned to react from a heart-centered (intuitive) place versus a reactive, defended state. The two most important actions for developing intuition may seem contradictory to one another, but they are in fact complementary. The first is to be still. The second is stepping into your power. Paramhansa Yogananda taught that we should be “actively calm yet calmly active” as we practice meditation. What he meant was that we don’t just sit and zone out but work with the body’s energy (specifically, the breath) as we strive toward higher states of consciousness. Applying this same philosophy (being still while activating your inner power) is necessary for honing your sense of intuition too. Two exercises that can help identify issues that may be interfering with tapping into your personal power, and in turn your intuition, are the MBS Scan and the AAA Plan.

Mind-Body-Spirit (MBS) Scan

The MBS Scan helps identify where you might be giving away your power because you are not listening to (or following) your inner guidance. It’s a self-awareness exercise, and gives you something to work with. Be as honest as you can, but at the same time don’t be too hard on yourself. Mind: Breathe in and out a few times. Settle into a quiet state of mind. Now ask: Have I let the behavior (or beliefs) of another influence how I make decisions or live my life? How does it make me feel when I let others choose for me? Two of the most detrimental things to developing (and empowering your sense of intuition are saying yes when, in your heart, you want to say no; and letting others choose for you. No other human being can possibly know what you know. Understanding this is the key for moving past the opinions and behaviors of other people and stepping into your power, your own truth. Body: Sit still and close your eyes. Using your breath, slowly and methodically scan your body, starting with your feet and moving up. Follow the breath as it breathes your body. Listen to what the breath is saying. Is it getting stuck? Where? Can you sense a vibration or movement of energy (or lack of) in various body parts, organs, or muscle groups? When we hold a low sense of self, we often feel it in the solar plexus, throat, and lower region at the back of the head near the medulla oblongata. The energy could be stuck anywhere, but these are the most common because the gut (third chakra) is your power center; the throat (fifth chakra) is associated with speaking and standing in your truth; and the back of the head (sixth chakra) is where energy flows in toward

the third eye, the heart of intuitive insights. Spirit: Ask yourself: When is the last time I slowed down to check in with my higher self? Intuition is the gentle voice of your soul and is best heard when you slow down. Imagine sitting down for a cup of tea with your soul. Now, imagine your soul holding a talking stick. Having already taken your turn with the stick, ask your soul what you need to do in order to hone your intuition. Be still. Listen. Write a page or two about what came up for you in the MBS Scan.

Awareness-Action-Affirmation (AAA) Plan

The AAA gathers the results of your MBS Scan. Think of it as a three-step action plan for sharpening your intuition by reclaiming your personal power. Awareness: Review the results of your MBS Scan.

Circle words that show where you’ve listened to your intuition and underline words where you’ve ignored your inner voice, perhaps saying yes when you meant no. How did each scenario make you feel? Action: Is there a situation where you wanted to speak your truth but didn’t? What would have happened if you’d spoken your truth? Affirmation: Using words from the conversation with your soul (while using the talking stick), write an affirmation. Let’s try this exercise using the example of saying yes when you meant no. •Awareness:Whenmyfriend asks me to do things, I say yes to appease him/her but I don’t really like that I feel so wiped out after we spend time together. •Action:Iwillsayno(without making excuses) next time he/she asks me to hang out. •Affirmation:“Inspeaking my truth, I

Intuition: The Common Sense of the Soul empower my intuition.”

The Seventh Sense If intuition is your sixth sense, then common sense is your seventh. Common sense is having the ability to make decisions based on real-life circumstances and understanding the consequences when you don’t exercise this ability. When you combine your sixth and seventh senses, you empower the wisdom – the voice – of your soul. The soul knows what’s best for you, always and in all ways. Intuition is the common sense of the soul. The soul’s voice is like that of a mother who wants not only to keep you safe, but to guide you toward being your best and true self in every area of your life.

If you live with cats and dogs, you are most likely aware of the question of vaccination, which becomes more and more of a dilemma as time goes by. I never felt good about the “new” vaccines, now considered or referred to as “non-core” and I never gave them to any of my animals. None of my animals have ever had a problem because of that either. As a child I still remember a couple of heart-breaking experiences. My friend and next-door neighbor adopted a young black and white kitten. Within a few days the kitten died very suddenly from what we were told was distemper. Also, when growing up, I cared for an older stray/feral cat that hung out in our neighborhood. He would come and sit with my female cat on the back wall of our yard almost on a daily basis. I thought they were in love. After many years, he died in our basement from distemper. I grew up thinking that vaccinating our animal friends was critically important. Later on, while working at local veterinary hospitals, I remember sending out those yearly vaccine reminder cards by the hundreds. After getting my degree in veterinary technology and going to work full time in vet practices, I was exposed on a daily basis to the importance of vaccinating our animal friends frequently, at least so I was told, as well as being introduced to more and more new kinds of vaccines.

At the same time, I saw many, many animals react to those vaccines, both old and new. Some of those reactions, usually allergic in nature, were so severe that the animal died or came close anyway. More and more there were stories of how some vaccines, especially the newer ones, actually could cause the disease they were supposed to protect against. Unexplainable cancer was growing at the site where some vaccines were given. Given all of that, I began to question what I had been taught by the vets I worked for and was educated by. At some point I no longer had a good feeling about giving all those vaccines to my animals. Remembering what I saw as a child, I always vaccinated my puppies and kittens as youngsters but after they were a few years old, I began to ignore the annual boosters. None of my older animals ever had a problem because of this. In the later years of my career working in vet hospitals, I had the pleasure of working with a vet from out of our area that joined the practice I was working for. He was brilliant and had a photographic memory. I liked and respected him very much. He had spent most of his career working in research at veterinary schools and was extraordinarily knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. At some point the subject of vaccines came up between us and he asked me why I did not vaccinate my older animals. I told him I just did not “feel” good about it so I did not do it. To my surprise he told me he agreed with me. He shared the fact that many years prior he had worked for the doctor responsible

Vaccination: Helpful or Harmful?

for veterinary vaccine protocols. He told me that doctor had told him that even back then they knew we were over-vaccinating our animals but because it generated so much money that it would always be the case. Hmmm. Before I continue, it is very important that I remind you that I am not a veterinarian. You must educate yourself and make your own decisions about whether or not you vaccinate your animals. That being said, I want to share with you some things I have learned and what I currently do with my own animal friends regarding vaccines. Over the years of doing my radio show, I have interviewed many holistic vets and read lots of books on this subject. Some of those well-known vets said they do not vaccinate their own animals. They told me they would rather deal with the disease itself than the effects of the vaccine! I am actually aware of much information in support of this position but space is too limited to go into it all here. Some of those vets said they do vaccinate but on a very limited basis. Even though I could make a very good

case for not vaccinating at all, I must say that does not feel good to me either. I do vaccinate my animals. However, I keep it as simple and limited as possible. Whenever possible, I vaccinate for only one disease at a time and I never combine vaccines with other procedures, like surgery or something that is likely going to be stressful to the animal’s immune system. The exception to that would be if requiring two trips to the vet would be more stressful than doing them together. I vaccinate with only core vaccines. For dogs: distemper, parvovirus (my vet gives a DHPP; I decided I was okay with that) and rabies. Leptospirosis has been taken out of most dog combo vaccines recently but I elected to have my dog get it because of possible exposure to rat and raccoon urine in the woods where we hike. For cats: panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinopneumonitis virus (FVR-CP) and rabies. I like to begin my puppy and kitten vaccines no earlier than eight weeks, then again at 12 and 16 weeks. After one year of age, I give a combo booster and rabies (separately). Rabies can be a legal issue, so do what you must. Dr. Jean Dodds is currently doing vaccine trials to determine just how long rabies vaccines last so laws can be changed accordingly. (www.rabieschallengefund.org). I consider my animals good to go for life after that. If I was concerned on down the line, before vaccinating I would do blood tests to determine if they actually need more protection.

Throughout my life, I have often felt that the universe guides me, line upon line, precept upon precept, one step at a time. As I move forward, I sometimes feel unsure as to where I am going, feeling that I am wandering aimlessly, without direction or guidance. Yet when I look back, I can see there has been a clear and deliberate pathway that I have taken. To me, it’s like I am walking along a darkened forest path and the universe has the flashlight. As I walk along this path, source directs the light one footstep ahead of my left foot and says, “Step here.” Then it points to a step ahead of my right foot and repeats the directive.

guarantees. Instead, I received inspiration; first to fill out an entrance application, then to actually submit the transcripts, next to meet with the admissions committee, etc. Each step felt right, but there was never an overview of the entire journey and never a guarantee. I simply was inspired and encouraged to take each step with no other promises given. Steps taken, applications completed and documents submitted, I finally received word that I had been accepted. I was ecstatic. But with the excitement came a new fear. Could I produce grad school-level work? In my childhood, I was often told I was stupid by my dad, and as a result I had low self-esteem and was an underachiever. I did not view myself as very smart, and so I never applied myself in school. In 13 years of public school, I had never taken a book home. The grades I received reinforced that I was not that bright. When I was in high school, I did not even imagine myself going to college, let alone grad school. And yet here I was, contemplating not only enrolling in a double master’s degree program but committing myself to a large student loan. All the doubts and insecurities of my childhood returned. What if I couldn’t keep up with the younger, brighter students? What if I embarrassed myself in front of my

instructors and classmates? Was it better to never attempt grad school and just keep telling myself I could have, if only...? I kept looking to the universe, requesting some assurance that I would be able to complete this mission, some assurance that I would not crash and burn in my attempts to complete grad school. Fueled by fear and insecurity, I decided I was not going to continue until I received confirmation from the universe that I would successfully complete my degree. I am a stubborn and rebellious soul at times. I locked all fours and decided that I absolutely had to see what was ahead. I demanded to see the entire picture and vowed that I would not take another step until I knew my fate. Well, the universe waited patiently for me to get over my obstinence Tired of hitting brick wall after brick wall, I eventually humbled myself and reached out to the universe, asking for guidance once again. The universe answered my supplications with a loving, gentle – but firm – response to stay on the path of my heart’s desire and trust, understanding that the universe sees the entire picture and knows not only my heart but the heart of everyone connected with the situation. By letting go, trusting, and allowing myself to be led one step at a time, I was able to release my need to be in control and turn it over to universal love and wisdom. I came to realize that by walking the path lit by universal flashlights, there was no way I could embarrass myself; no way I could fail. I did get my master’s degree, and grad school became one of the most positive, rewarding, periods of my life. Life is a journey, and the more I learn to trust, the easier I find it is to be trusting. Each time, an incredibly loving, patient and forgiving universe continues where I left off before and gently points the flashlight ahead again, “Step here... now here... now here... ” Life is filled with choices and possibilities. The universe (God, Source, the creator, etc.) does not adhere to a pre-destined script because we have free will and we choose each and every step of our way. Sometimes we are assured and move decisively through life. At other times, we are hesitant, unsure of where to go and afraid to take a first step. It’s at these times that universal flashlights shine most brightly. In the quiet reflection of your private self, release the need for guarantees and trust your heart. The universe will guide you. The path will be illuminated with a nudge to “step here.”

Universal Flashlights

There have been times when I get impatient and demand that I see further down the road, to see how my life is going to turn out. I feel inspired to start a new venture, but want to see if it will work out or not. Shall I accept this job? Should I move out of state? Is this relationship right for me? I remember when I was contemplating graduate school. Getting my master’s degree in psychology was a goal I had had since

the day I graduated from college, but the pressures and responsibilities of work and children had kept the dream on the back-burner. Then the time came when it felt right to pursue this dream. It had been several years since I had been in school, and I worried about whether I could complete the requirements of grad school. I felt I needed a guarantee that I could do it before I could commit. The universe, however, provided no such

BooksUnder the Banana MoonLiving, loving, Loss and Asperger’sBy Kimberly Gerry-Tucker If you don’t have personal experience with Asperger’s, selective mutism, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), this memoir will introduce you to all of it with compassion and will broaden your awareness. We follow the author, Kim, as she grows up, gets married, and becomes a mother, all before she was diagnosed! By the time she’s in her late thirties, she has become caregiver to her husband who has ALS. The Good Life LabRadical Experiments in Hands-on LivingBy Wendy Jehanara TremayneStorey Publishing If you have ever thought about attempting to live a self-sufficient life – or you are actually trying to do it – this is a book you will treasure. Even if this isn’t a lifestyle for you, this is an enjoyable book to read if you enjoy creative people. Wendy and her partner, Mikey, left their high-powered, consumerist lifestyles in New York City and moved to New Mexico where they bought a one-acre abandoned RV park and remodeled a 40-year-old mobile home using mostly recycled materials. They learned how to be foragers, builders,

herbalists, engineers, botanists, welders, and even learned how to make biofuels. This book tells everything, mistakes and all. Readers will be inspired to find ways to be less consumer-oriented and more creative in how they approach life. There are tons of practical plans and recipes to try. It is a fun book to read!

The Peaceable ForestIndia’s Tale of Kindness to AnimalsBy Kosa Ely withIllustrations by Anna JohanssonInsight Kids As an oversized children’s book, The Peaceable Forest offers a rendition of an ancient Vedic tale that has been passed along orally through families for generations. Love and Spirit MedicineBy Shonagh HomeTurning Stone Press This is an open and honest spiritual memoir that details the author’s life and relationships while she grew into her shamanic practice. Most especially does she talk extensively about her experiences with psychedelic mushrooms and how these shaped her spiritual growth. Those interested in shamanism, especially the paths that include the use of consciousness-altering substances, will find this book enlightening and very helpful. Not everyone is called to this path and it is not for everyone as some people are not psychologically healthy enough to be able to handle the results. Reading Love and Spirit Medicine prior to using these substances could make a huge difference in the outcome.

emotional healings as well as improving their relationships, getting promotions or better jobs, selling homes, etc. The author is a senior trainer at the Monroe Institute and knew Bob Monroe personally. It is fascinating to see how the techniques and ideas used by the Monroe Institute have informed this work. The book really isn’t about learning how to gamble in Las Vegas although that is the setting used. It is about learning how to tap into one’s innate power to manifest using intention and heart-centered energy.

The Honeymoon EffectThe Science of Creating Heaven on EarthBy Bruce H. Lipton, Pd.D.Hay House Bruce Lipton is the author of The Biology of Belief. Now he turns his attention to the world of relationships and teaches his readers how they can retain honeymoon feelings long after the honeymoon has passed. Discussing how there are four minds at work in any relationship, Lipton shows how we can be sabotaged by past programming that exists at the subconscious level. The book is not only enlightening, it is entertaining and inspirational. The epilogue tells the story of how he and his wife of 17 years have used the ideas in this book to maintain a loving and joyful relationship. There are lots of resources given that can be used to improve one’s personal relationships as well as ideas about how world peace can be achieved by using these same principles.

If you are interested in feng shui then you’ll be very familiar with the concept that clutter creates energy blockages. This in turn is said to result in possible situations such as confused or stagnant thinking, lack of forward movement with life’s goals, lack of direction or purpose, and even muddled emotions. Do any of these sound familiar? Are you in some way experiencing stagnation in your life? If so, what can you do to release any and all impediments to success? There is no doubt that undertaking a major clean-out of home and office brings about feelings of lightness, clarity, and freshness. Anyone who spends a day or more purging belongings attests to these

feelings. However, there is another aspect to this, one that is generally not acknowledged or even explored by most people. Some years ago I became aware of the importance of letting go of my story: all the reasons for my beliefs and actions, all the countless experiences that produce the sum of the persona presented to the world. It was with some amazement when I clearly heard, and came to understand the words, “Let go of your story.” After hearing those words in my head I had the immediate awareness and understanding that all past experiences, beliefs, values, etc. are literally an energetic ball-and-chain that prevent you from living fully in the present. Every time you present yourself to the world via your story you are actually placing your energy in past memories, emotions, and events, and these actually prevent you from living in the precious now moment. How often have you shared your story with friends, colleagues, even strangers and felt the heaviness or weight of those experiences as you recount them once again? When this happens you are once again reconnecting with and feeling those situations, which then drains you energetically and distracts you from enjoying and embracing new opportunities. As time compresses even further – and there’s no doubt that time is speeding up – the past has less relevancy to current issues and situations. So what is likely to happen

when you ditch your story, stop sharing it, and let go of the emotional attachment? Apart from feeling lighter, calmer, and clearer you actually are in a space where there is less likelihood of repeating past patterns, being stuck in old paradigms, or reacting in fear to new and unfamiliar situations. Letting go of your story, however, is not as easy as it sounds, especially if you have used your financial situation, past hardships, health issues, etc. as a means of identifying with the world, and also as a means of identifying yourself. Often without

Is Mental Clutter Holding You Back?

Bente Hansen explains that “All past expe-riences, beliefs, values, etc are literally an energetic ball and chain that prevent you from living fully in the present. Every time you present yourself to the world via your story you are actually placing your energy in past memories, emotions and events, and these actually prevent you from living in the precious Now moment.”

a story there is a lack of identity, a lack of defining oneself and one’s role within family, community, and the global dynamics. You literally may feel like an empty vessel. All that has bound and defined you no longer exists. There is no one to blame or attach to emotionally. When you reach this stage of fully letting go of your story, knowing it has served its purpose but is no longer required as a crutch, then you are fully ready to embrace the feeling that you are nothing (letting go of ego attachments), and that less is more. This may sound rather ironic but it actually occurs in this manner. Without a story or a means of identifying or defining self there is merely you, the energetic, all-powerful you, present in the moment with limitless potentialities. Sometimes all that happens is the simple experience of being in the moment, of feeling the fluid energies of life flowing through your physical vessel. Other times when in this empty state new, creative and life-affirming intuitions flow strongly. Once you decide to let go of your story you will begin to experience the magic of not only living in the present moment, you will experience your unlimited potential often in areas and opportunities that were unthinkable and could not happen because you were holding so tightly onto your story that there was no room for anything else to transpire. In a truly loving and harmonious community there is no room for living in the past, of holding onto emotional attachments or of defining oneself according to egoic tendencies. Shifting to a new paradigm requires willingness to make changes and letting go of old stories. Changes are required on both the physical and energetic levels, and these changes require conscious awareness and commitment. Let go of your story and enjoy the boundless opportunities and miracles that are likely to manifest.
