Playing board games has been my hobby – and, at times, my business – for many years. I’d like everybody to share my enthusiasm and Games from Pevans is one way I can do this. This catalogue shows the games available from me – games I like and that I want other people to enjoy. A la Carte A game of competitive cooking with a dexterity element. It’s heavy on luck, stitching up your opposing chefs and good fun! It’s been a favourite of mine for 20 years and this new edition is terrific.

Yunnan Players are trading tea from the eponymous province through the whole of China along the Tea-Horse Road. The key is choosing the right moment to switch from generating cash (for further development) to scoring points. Another clever game.

Zong Shi A clever, Chinese-themed game in which alchemists (and their apprentices) collect the materials they need to produce masterworks. There aren’t enough to go round, of course, so players are competing – or they can do something different, such as curry favour with the locals.

Café Melange This is a game of logic set in Viennese café society in 1910. Players score points by seating personalities of the time in the eponymous café and placing their own people at the same tables. It’s a clever, subtle game with atmospheric artwork.

For 2-4 players, aged 10+, playing time 45 minutes: £28.00

Can’t Stop A new edition of the classic push-your-luck game. The impulse to roll the dice just one more time is always there – you simply can’t stop! Designed by Sid Sackson, this game is simple, quick-playing and great fun.

For 2-4 players, aged 8+, 30 mins to play: £28.00

Candy Crave (Futterneid) This may be a little game, but it is still challenging. Players collect the most valuable sweets from the bowls on the table, but nobody knows just what the total values will be until all the sweets have been collected.

For 2-5 players, aged 8+, playing time 10 mins: £15.00

Carpe Astra Players build a powerbase throughout the Galactic Empire by connecting with important guilds and slandering their opponents. The player with the most support gets the throne. Carpe Astra is an entertaining game of networks – just 1 left.

For 2-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 60 mins: £18.00

Ca$h’n Guns (2nd ed) A bonkers game of waving foam rubber guns about as gangsters squabble over dividing the loot. The bullets don't always fly, so there’s an element of bluff involved, too. It’s great fun and good to have this second edition.

Ultimate Werewolf Inquisition A deduction game that takes Werewolf as its starting point, but doesn’t knock players out of the game. Players are inquisitors investigating werewolf attacks, but have them-selves been infiltrated by the werewolves... clever stuff.

For 3-12 players, aged 8+, playing time 45 minutes: £18.00

Upon a Salty Ocean Ingenious game of developing 16th century Rouen, based on its wealth from exploiting the fishing grounds off Newfoundland. Turn order is crucial – along with having enough money! Different and enjoyable.

Urbania Another game of town planning! In this case, players are re-developing run-down areas of a city. Their job is to make it fit for the 21st century – while perhaps completing some of their pet projects as well. It’s challenging while providing several strategies for players to try.

For 2-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 45 minutes: £25.00

Wampanoag Players are leaders in the eponymous Native American nation, pressured by the arriving Europeans in the east and their traditional enemies in the west. It’s up to the players to do their best against the events of each year. Good stuff.

We Will Wok You Ignore the jokey title and theme. This is a fine little card game that gives players lots of decisions to make as they grab the ingredients needed to fill their woks. It's quite fiendish.

Clash of Cultures An exploration and development game that looks terrific. Technologies make each empire different. There are Wonders to build and barbarians to suppress while keeping your population happy.

For 2-4 players, aged 12+, 4 hours to play: £58.00

CO2 The theme – reducing carbon dioxide emissions – is one for our time. Players build power plants across the planet. However, they must keep down the emissions or everybody loses! It’s a clever and intricate game. For 1-5 players, aged 12+, playing time 120 mins: £40.00

Coach Ride to Devil’s Castle (Kutschfahrt…) Members of two secret societies on a frantic journey. If either can get the right artefacts, they win. The problem is, nobody knows the other members of their society! A hugely atmospheric game that is really gripping to play.

For 3-10 players, aged 12+, playing time 30 minutes: £5.50

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics The period fits well with the Commands & Colors style of simple wargame. The rules may be simple, but the game is a challenge and well produced. It captures the feel of Napoleonic warfare while being accessible to casual players.

For 2 players, aged 12+, playing time 90 minutes: £48.00

C&C: Napoleonics – expansions Expansion 1: The Spanish Army – continues the Peninsula War theme with units of the Spanish army and eighteen scenarios: £40.00. Expansion 3: The Austrian Army – Pieces for the Austrian Empire’s multi-national army plus scenarios for its battles with Napoleon’s France in 1805 and 1809, culminating in the Battle of Wagram: £40.00.

Concordia This is a very simple game: each turn you play a card. That's it. It's what the cards let you do that makes the game. Players move their colonists from city to city, build houses and produce, buy and sell goods. It’s another cracking game from Mac Gerdts.

Tales of the Arabian Nights A fabulous new edition of a real classic and one of my top ten games of all time. It takes you into the world of the Thousand and One Nights to create your own tale to match those told by Scheherazade. Brilliant stuff in a big, heavy box.

For 1-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 120 minutes: £40.00

That’s Life! The mechanics are pretty simple: advance your pawns along a track made by laying tiles. However, the tiles provide bonuses and penalties, so you need to move the right pawn to the right space. The tiles also let you mess with other players, which adds to the fun.

For 2-6 players, aged 8+, 30 minutes to play: £25.00

Through the Ages A brilliant civilization-development game. Players balance their production, population, technology and military to come out on top. It is a gripping and absorbing game with lots of difficult decision-making. For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 2 hrs+: £48.00

Ticket to Ride: India & Switzerland I do like Ticket to Ride and India has become my favourite map. The challenge is not just the geography, but also the interesting bonus (for making loops).

For 2-4 (India) or 2-3 (Switzerland) players, aged 8+, playing time 45 minutes (base game required): £24.00

Ultimate Werewolf The ultimate party game for anywhere from a few friends to dozens of people. Each player has an agenda: as a villager, hunt down the werewolves; as a werewolf, convince the villagers that you’re innocent, while secretly dining on those same villagers each night. Great fun.

Copycat As the artwork suggests, this is about the US Presidential election. Players compete with their ‘campaign workers’ and use cards to gain the Presidential nomination. It’s an interesting challenge, enhanced with amusing artwork. For 2-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 95 minutes: £35.00

Cosmic Encounter Fabulously-produced new edition of a classic. The aim is to plant colonies in the other players' star systems, but the key to the game is using your cards and special powers effectively. Winning needs planning, guile and a smidgeon of luck.

For 3-5 players, aged 12+, 1-2 hours to play: £45.00

Crude A vintage game of the oil industry with great-looking models of drilling rigs, refineries and ‘gas stations’. The aim is to make money and players must balance what they buy, what they sell and what they process.

For 2-4 players, aged 13+, playing time 120 mins: £48.00

Cuatro A fast and fun tactical game that crosses Yahtzee with Connect 4 and adds a few wrinkles of its own.

For 2-4 players, aged 8+, playing time 20 minutes: £20.00

Snowdonia: Jungfraubahn & Mt Washington This neat expansion allows you to shift the mountain railway-building from damp Wales to snowy Switzerland or New Hampshire. The snow may fill in what the players have excavated, but they now have dynamite! Excellent stuff.

For 1-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 90 minutes: £12.00

Sole Mio! A sequel to Mamma Mia! (above), players are again assembling pizzas with a variety of toppings. It can be played on its own or combined with Mamma Mia! for a bigger game.

For 2-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 40 minutes: £5.50

Spice Islands The 2007 game from the main man at Stratamax. The game is “roughly based on the Dutch East India Company”. Players get votes on what the company does based on their shareholdings, but can also play pirate.

For 3-4 players: £20.00

Start Player “Choose a player to start” is the instruction in many games. But how? Start Player is the answer. Shuffle the deck, draw a card and identify the start player: the tallest person, whoever has the most open buttons, the player with the longest hair... This is such a simple and utterly brilliant idea.

For any number of players, of any age, playing time 30 seconds: £12.00

Steam Players build a railway network to gain income from shipping goods between cities. The problem is all those other players trying to do the same! The refinements in Steam make it more forgiving than its progenitor, Age of Steam, but still brilliant.

Robinson Crusoe Brilliantly atmospheric and challenging co-operative game of surviving on a tropical island. The basic scenario is the traditional shipwreck, but others include cannibals and a volcanic eruption.

For 1-4 players, aged 14+, 120 mins to play: £60.00

Roll Through the Ages Excellent dice game of developing your culture—inspired by the weighty Through the Ages, but no relation. Players have lots of options, reducing the luck of the dice rolls. Excellent stuff.

1-4 players, aged 8+, 45 minutes to play: £22.00

Scotland Yard The original hidden movement game. Master criminal Mister X dodges around London, avoiding the detectives who try to work out where he's got to. A terrific family game and still a challenge for gamers.

For 3-6 players, aged 10+, 45 mins to play: £27.00

Sheepdogs of Pendleton Hill The 2012 game from Stratamax is professionally produced to a high standard. It is a simple game with brightly coloured wooden pieces: small sheep and tall shepherds for each player and a black, black wolf! It’s an entertaining game that isn’t as light as you might think.

For 3-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 40 minutes: £35.00

Snowdonia (2nd ed) This is essentially a re-print of my top game from 2012, so I recommend it. Players struggle against the elements – and each other – as they build the tramroad railway up Mount Snowdon. The game plays rather faster than you expect and doesn’t got bogged down, whatever the weather.

Family Business Third edition of this classic card game of warring mobsters. It is huge fun as players put contracts on each other’s gang, stand mobsters up against the wall and start Mob Wars. Snazzy new artwork adds to the appeal.

For 2-6 players, aged 8+, playing time 30 minutes: £10.00

A Few Acres of Snow Brilliant wargame covering the wars between Britain and France over Canada. Players use the cards in their hand to deploy troops, add new settlements and lay siege to the enemy. However, they must also manage the cards they have available. It’s clever and challenging.

For 2 players, aged 14+, playing time 60 minutes: £30.00

Firefly: the Game This highly atmospheric science fiction game does an excellent job of reproducing the spirit of the original TV show. Players run their own spaceship from planet to planet, picking up work where they can and dodging the authorities (and the really bad guys!).

For 1-4 players, aged 13+, 2-4 hours to play: £40.00

Breakin’ Atmo expansion: adds cards to provide even more variety in the crew, equipment and jobs available to spaceship captains.

As the base game (1-4 players, aged 13+, 2-4 hours): £10.00 Pirates and Bounty Hunters expansion: adds new types of spaceship, allows more players to take part and gives players opportunities to play pirate and to claim bounties on the 'verse's Most Wanted.

For 2-6 players, aged 13+, playing time 2-4 hours: £25.00

First Train to Nuremberg (+Last Train to Wensleydale) An ingenious train game that involves collecting and delivering goods (beer!) and passengers, building railway tracks and selling out to the big companies at the right moment. The Wensleydale version involves cheese!

Five Cucumbers (Fünf Gurken) This is a take on a traditional trick-taking game where the object is NOT to win the last trick. The components are simple, but the game is anything but. It’s neat and quick to play.

For 2-6 player, aged 8+, playing time 25 minutes: £6.50

Fortune and Glory This is a monster of a game themed around 1930s pulp fiction – heroes pursuing ‘vile organisations’ to save the world – and can be played competitively or co-operatively. It’s a game that’s worth playing just for experience.

For 1-8 players, aged 12+, playing time 90 minutes: £70.00

Fortune and Glory – Rise of the Crimson Hand This expansion builds up the Order of the Crimson Hand from the base game, providing new villains and a whole team of acolytes working against the heroes. Extra cards and new features add depth to the game.

As base game (1-8 players, aged 12+), playing time 120 minutes: £32.00

Friese’s Landlord This is a madcap card game of buildings, tenants and underhand tactics! Cards fly around the table, buildings go up – and come down – and the police put the wrong player in gaol! However, beneath the fun is a clever game that makes players think.

For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 40 minutes+: £13.00

Fruit Fair Players harvest fruit to win prizes: however, the player with the most of each fruit gets a special ability, so there’s a good reason to hang on to fruit, too. Add in big, bold artwork and it’s good stuff.

Phoenicia This is a cracking development game “inspired by Outpost and Civilization.” Players bid for cards to expand their village to a city state, balancing income and victory points. One of my perennial favourites.

For 2-5 players, aged 12+, 90 mins to play: £35.00

Port Royal A quick-playing card game with a push-your-luck element and a piratical theme. It's good fun concentrated into not much more than a deck of cards.

For 2-5 players, aged 8+, playing time 30 minutes: £8.00

Power Grid The game is about competing electricity companies. Players must invest in power stations, buy fuel and connect cities on the board. The winning criterion requires all three of these. It is a tricky balancing act that requires planning and a bit of luck. It’s a brilliant game.

For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 120 mins: £30.00

Promised Land The latest from the Ragnars is a game of Hebrews versus Heathens in ancient Israel. Depending on which side they are on, players will either attack or defend, gaining points for how well they do over several hundred years of conflict. A typically clever strategy game.

For 2-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 150 minutes: £35.00

The Resistance: Avalon Arthurian version of the hidden team card game. Players are Arthur's knights with quests to accomplish. Except that some of them are working for Mordred and will try to ensure the knights fail.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf A clever variant on Werewolf that packs the action into just one night. What's more, everybody gets to play and nobody gets knocked out. It's fast and furious.

For 3-10 players, aged 8+, playing time 10 mins: £18.00

Outpost I think of Outpost as an economic development race! Players add factories to expand their colony and bid for upgrades to improve it. This leads to an accelerating increase in technology. It demands concentration. For 2-9 players, aged 12+, playing time 150 mins: £45.00

Pandemic (2nd ed) The new edition is a complete re-design of this terrific cooperative game and includes two new roles for players. Players are fighting to cure viruses spreading across the planet. If they get it wrong, pandemics break out and mankind is doomed! No pressure, then.

For 2-5 players, aged 12+, playing time 45 minutes: £27.00

Pandemic: On the Brink The first expansion for Pandemic allows a fifth player to join the game. There are new roles for the players as well as new events to get in their way. And new scenarios can make the game even harder – including the bio-terrorist who is working against the others.

For 2-5 players, aged 12+, playing time 60 minutes: £25.00

Pandemic: In the Lab The second expansion provides the players with a laboratory in which to research their cures. Six people can now play together. There are new roles and some different scenarios, including the option of playing in teams.

Ginkgopolis Fascinating game of expanding a city – a city built from Ginkgo Biloba trees, apparently. Player use their cards to best effect to gain raw materials and build in specific areas. The bonuses at the end make it worth trying to control districts within the city. Clever and entertaining.

For 1-5 players, aged 10+, playing time 45 minutes: £40.00

Gotham Race (Ostfriesenlauf) This is a wonderfully bonkers race game – for example, it is possible to win the race by crossing the finish line in reverse! Mind you, there’s always the possibility that someone’s moved the finish line… Gotham Race is both very clever and great fun.

For 1-4 player, aged 10+, playing time 45 minutes: £10.00

new Greenland This is a three-cornered fight for survival between rival tribes in medieval Greenland. What players need in order to win depends on the choices they make during the game. More clever stuff from Mr Eklund.

For 1-3 players, aged 12+, playing time 90 minutes: £20.00

Hansa A clever tactical game of trading around the Baltic Sea in the days of the medieval Hanseatic League. One of my favourite Michael Schacht games.

For 2-4 players, aged 10+, 60 mins to play: £18.00

Hansa Teutonica Players establish a network of trading operations across the Hanseatic League in another clever game from Andreas Steding. It’s less about the actual trading, more about gaining ‘control’ of cities. It’s an intriguing game.

Keyflower: the Farmers This expansion for Keyflower adds a whole new dimension: farming. The new tiles provide farm buildings and fields along with wheat tokens and neat wooden animals. It gives the game a strategic element as well as new options for players.

For 2-6 players, aged 14+, playing time 90 minutes: £20.00

new Keyflower: the Merchants Expansion number two for the brilliant Keyflower gives players more options for developing their village. It can be used as the base game or to add extra opportunities to the original. My copies come with the Trader bonus tile.

For 2-6 players, aged 14+, playing time 90 minutes: £25.00

Kingdom of Solomon A cracking game set in ancient Israel under King Solomon. Players gather resources, erect buildings and contribute to the construction of the great temple. Good production, neat game mechanisms and great fun. For 2-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 60 min: £35.00

Kings Progress Players aim to gain the most prestige by influencing courtiers and getting gifts from the King as he travels the kingdom. In Kings Progress achieving your long-term goals depends on your short-term tactics.

For 3-5 players, aged 8+, 90 minutes: £25.00

Kosmonauts I like race games and this has the players navigating the solar system, visiting the planets. Each player works out the best route, but has to manage their fuel and the Newtonian movement system. It’s clever; it’s fun. For 2-4 players, aged 8+, playing time 60 minutes: £25.00

Kriegbot Build your own fighting robot! Take a vehicle and cover it with weapons. Then slug it out against your opponent(s). Okay, it’s a tad juvenile, but it is excellent fun!

For 2-6 players, aged 10+, playing time 1-2 hours: £13.00

La Loire Set around the eponymous French river (where all the best chateaux are!), it’s a resource management game of competing merchants and messengers during the development of the postal system. The game provides lots of tactical (and strategic) options (last copy).

For 1-4 players, aged 10+, playing time 90 minutes: £28.00

Memoir ’44: Terrain Pack This pack provides more terrain tiles for Memoir ‘44, both extras of existing terrain and some new features –useful if you’re designing your own scenarios. Plus some scenarios that make use of the new tiles.

As the base game: £25.00

Memoir ’44: Winter/Desert Board More of a nice-to-have than a necessity, this is a double-sided board like the one in the base game. However, this one is off-white on one side and sandy brown on the other – good backdrops for winter and desert scenarios, respectively.

As the base game: £14.00

Memoir ’44: Winter Wars This expansion is mainly about the Battle of the Bulge, with lots of snowy add-ons and scenarios for Memoir '44 fans, but I really like the special deck of Command cards to use with the big board version of the game, Breakthrough.

As the base game: £25.00

Mesopotamia A challenging game of exploring, building and sacrificing to the Gods! You need to use your limited actions to best effect to expand your clan in this fast-playing game from the designer of Carcassonne.

For 2-4 players, aged 10+, 45 mins to play: £24.00

Merchant of Venus Another classic that returns in a gorgeous new edition. As always, the game is about exploring the galaxy and trading between the various alien races. Set up a profitable trading network and you're away. Great fun every time.

For 1-4 players, aged 14+, playing time 180 mins: £58.00

Memoir ’44: Eastern Front Expansion for Memoir ‘44 that adds the Russian army (T34 tanks!) and scenarios for Eastern Front battles. Additional rules cover the specific conditions and constraints of the war in the East.

As the base game: £24.00

Memoir ’44: Equipment pack The big box of the Equipment pack adds specialist pieces for the base and expanded game. My favourites are “Hobart’s Funnies”: Churchill tanks with an assortment of special beach landing equipment for D-Day scenarios. Plenty of new scenarios feature the specialist equipment.

As the base game: £45.00

Memoir ’44: Mediterranean Theatre My favourite Memoir ‘44 expansion covers the war in the North African desert: Crusader tanks, 25-pounder guns and British infantry in shorts! Plus some challenging scenarios for Desert Rats and Afrika Korps.

As the base game: £25.00

Memoir ’44: Operation Overlord A double deck of cards specifically for playing the multi-player Overlord version of Memoir ‘44, along with rules, a second set of dice and extra markers.

As the base game: £18.00

Memoir ’44: Pacific Theatre Memoir ‘44 expansion that takes the game to the island battles of the Pacific. The pack contains Japanese army figures (infantry, tanks and guns), new terrain and some very demanding scenarios.

As the base game: £24.00

Leader 1 Excellent cycle racing game: the key is the ‘peloton’ – the pack where the bulk of the cyclists are. Players have to take their opportunities to break away. Leader 1 reproduces all the tactics of cycle races.

For 2-10 players, aged 14+, 60 mins to play: £30.00

League of Six Players win resources to spend on player order, next turn’s auction and goods that gain points and income. It’s a clever game, where players need to think ahead, but also adjust their strategy to what’s available.

For 3-5 players, aged 12+, 60 mins to play: £23.00

LeCardo Most word games are about making words out of letters. This one uses words! The aim is to score points by adding cards to make compound words or common phases. I just make puns!

For 2-4 players, aged 10+, playing time 20 minutes: £5.50

Legacy My find of the UK Games Expo: a game of competing ideologies as well as territory grabbing. I find the game particularly appealing because it uses a printed ‘tea towel’ as the board. Legacy has gone down well at Swiggers games club since the Expo. I find it good, chaotic fun.

For 3-5 players, aged 11+, playing time 90 minutes: £28.00

Liberté A clever game of the French Revolution. Players are not tied to one faction, but can use elements of each to promote themselves and do down their opponents. Watch out for the sudden death endings, though! For 3-6 players, aged 12+, playing time 120 mins: £43.00
