net neutrality
TRANSCRIPT
How It Begin ?In May 2014, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler released a plan that would have allowed companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon to discriminate online and create pay-to-play fast lanes.Millions of you spoke out — and fought back. Thanks to the huge public and political outcry, Wheeler shelved his original proposal, and on Feb. 4, 2015, he announced that he would base new Net Neutrality rules on Title II of the Communications Act, giving Internet users the strongest protections possible.
What Is Net Neutrality ?
Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging
differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.
After the US, it’s India’s turn to fight for net neutrality …
US just won its battle for net neutrality last month. Plus, TRAI is under pressure from the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), a telecom industry association that counts Google and
Facebook among its members and is lobbying against net neutrality in the country.
Why Should I Care ?
Neutrality also means that no matter telecom
operator you're with you should be able to access all data on
internet at the exact same speed .
Simply put, just because your telecom company
hypothetically
has a deal with say flipkart shouldn't mean that the can
make the amazon website load slower for
you
Sooo slow in fact that you eventually give up and are forced to shop at
flipkart because it's the only one that opens fast .
As the only thing worse than
no internetis slow internet.Telecom operators want to
carve up the
internet into a
bunch of different
sections ..
such that you have to
pay to access
every single one of them separately .
Let’s Understand It With An Example …..
Defend Internet Freedom in India!
Join us in fighting for net neutrality.
The idea net neutrality internet service providers
give their customers equal
access to all lawful websites and
services on the internet, without giving priority to any website over
another.
Due to intense lobbying by telecom operators like Airtel and Vodafone, the
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI) is planning to allow them to block
apps and websites to extort more money
from consumers and businesses .
TRAI has released
a consultation
paper with 20
questions spread
across 118 complicated pages.
