Line Line is the path of a

point moving through space.

Lines can vary in width, length, direction, curvature, and even color.

A line is longer than it is wide and is used to create a shape.

Value Value is the relative

degrees of light and dark that add contrast to a visual image.

Without value contrasts, visual images would be hard to see.

Texture Texture defines

surface characteristics.

Texture brings depth and dimension to a visual image.

Texture can be real or implied and can be experienced through touch or the illusion of touch.

Page 12: NessethK_CI 225 Visual Literacy Project

HarmonyHarmony refers

to all parts of the image relating to and complementing each other.

Harmony pulls pieces of the image together.

Page 13: NessethK_CI 225 Visual Literacy Project

Unity Unity is the

relationship among visual images and how they function together to contribute to the whole image.

Page 14: NessethK_CI 225 Visual Literacy Project

Movement Movement occurs

when objects appear to be moving in the visual image.

Movement comes from the shapes, curves, forms, and lines used in the visual image.

Page 15: NessethK_CI 225 Visual Literacy Project

Variety Variety is the

differences in objects that add visual interest.

Variety adds contrast.

Just by changing size, point of view or breaking the pattern you can add variety.
