What is Visual Literacy? Visual Literacy is the comprehension
and application of design elements and principles.
Visual images saturate our world. We as observers must use Visual Literacy as a tool for communication because images are powerful to behold and can emotionally and psychologically impact us as a culture in a variety of ways.
Visual Literacy Includes:
Elements of Design
Point Line
Shape Value
Texture Color
Principles of Design
Balance Perspective Harmony
Unity Movement
Variety
Point Point is the
simplest element of design.
Point is the focus of a visual image.
Point draws the observer’s attention to something important.
Line Line is the path of a
point moving through space.
Lines can vary in width, length, direction, curvature, and even color.
A line is longer than it is wide and is used to create a shape.
ShapeShape is a defined
area that has an implied boundary surrounded by space.
Shape can take endless variances of physical forms and serve many purposes in images.
Circle
Square
Triangle
Rectangle
Geometric
Organic
Etc.
Value Value is the relative
degrees of light and dark that add contrast to a visual image.
Value is used to describe objects and shapes in space.
Without value contrasts, visual images would be hard to see.
Texture Texture defines
surface characteristics.
Texture brings depth and dimension to a visual image.
Texture can be real or implied and can be experienced through touch or the illusion of touch.
Color Color stimulates
visual images by reflecting or absorbing light we see from the intended surface.
Color can be used in a variety of combinations and can evoke different emotions.

Balance Balance places
parts of an image in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement to appear equally important.
Balance can be horizontal, vertical, and/or radial and can display different forms of symmetry.
Perspective
Perspective is the relationship between visual images arranged in space.
Perspective adds realism to objects in a visual image and can draw the observer in.
HarmonyHarmony refers
to all parts of the image relating to and complementing each other.
Harmony pulls pieces of the image together.
Unity Unity is the
relationship among visual images and how they function together to contribute to the whole image.
Movement Movement occurs
when objects appear to be moving in the visual image.
Movement comes from the shapes, curves, forms, and lines used in the visual image.
Variety Variety is the
differences in objects that add visual interest.
Variety adds contrast.
Just by changing size, point of view or breaking the pattern you can add variety.
