Kurt Antonio Hussey 1985-2009

“You are pure, loved for who you are and what you set out to be”

Its never too late to make all of your confessions. Its never too late to mourn. Its never too late to say goodbye. Its never too late to say to them have a nice day.

There are a few things I would like to say before you are truly gone from our lives, I know it’s never too late to apologise but the biggest thing you have when you lose someone is regret. I’m sorry I couldn’t see you for a true hero that I’ve heard you are. A football player, where I come from, they are treated as celebrities but I know you stand out more than all of them. I only saw you a couple times, but I still remember you for who you are: a friend, big cousin and possibly a good role model for me. When I heard the news you were gone, I was still in secondary school dealing with how I want to live my life. Being ignorant to how much of a blessing life actually was. My Dad once told me that when people die and leave, their spirit is still in your heart. I never knew my grandmother on my Dad’s side, she died the week after I was born. I have seen pictures of her, but I am always drawn to questions who was she? What was she like? They are not gone, they are with you if you accept them to be. Kurt died because he was pure, he was not a follower but a believer of coming onto his own. Just like with me in films, music and the arts, he expresses himself through

sport. I could learn a thing or two from football, but the point I am trying to make is because of his capacity for humility and ambition which others despise is what caused his tragic demise. You were an inspiration for youth and still are, in your own way, you helped provide a good well being from everyone and I am grateful. Bye Kurt, I wish you everlasting happiness in heaven. Its never too late to band together. Its never too late to become united. Its never too late to be a role model. Its never too late to just persevere.

The Creation of a Legend

Coming up with my own comic book anti-hero

wasn’t an easy one. It is just like nurturing and

looking after your baby, you defend it against the

big wide world until it grows into a fully complete

product on the market.

It all began in the summer of 2005, Batman Begins

hit cinemas and I was about 13 and was in my

eighth year in secondary school. I wrote two drafts

of the storyline (the latter was not coherent) but

it still needed work. I had an idea for a masked

vigilante in a trench coat called Nemesis the

Hunter that blended superheroes with spy fiction,

thriller and military subjects out of something

from Tom Clancy or Jason Bourne novels. Watching

the Caped Crusader in action, I felt greatly

inspired and decided to go deeper into my

character’s background. In Greek mythology,

Nemesis is the Goddess of revenge or punishment

and the word means vengeance or someone who is

an enemy. Like Nemesis, Batman shares a few skills and traits in common; they are

ruthless, have lost parents, they have a crisis in relationships and some angst, both

are rich men with a superior intellect and have very adept martial arts skills and

many resources for equipment. Nevertheless, their motives, and of course, their

origin differs in so many ways.

Anyway, I won’t spoil anything more for all readers but I promise you all, this will

be a thrill ride. Issue 2 deals with a lot of ground into each of the characters and

the plot will start to progress into its main timeline. By issue 3 everything starts

falling on its head. My favourite scene is in the 3rd issue because this scene reveals

who Nemesis really is and explains the reason for his code of ethics and why he

became who we see today. This scene greatly identifies with his psyche.

Make sure that you look out for the prequel, Nemesis Dawn of a Legend, a graphic

novel coming soon. Like Nemesis, I’ve only just begun to shine and I am at the

start of my career. I got so much in the world to explore and I am working on many

projects; comics, films, music etc ready to dazzle your mind. I’m up for a

challenge and I want to be able to shake up an audience in any medium. At this

stage, I’ve finished a couple test shoots, booking two more and should be up for

shooting very soon. Hardest to Survive is a work in progress.

As a script-writer and illustrator, you have the best of both worlds. You don’t have

a writer telling you what pictures to create and no artist telling what does or

doesn’t work. However, your biggest rival is time. How am I gonna hand in a script?

– Even more pressure! – A great one that reads well and provides the finished art

within four weeks. I did the rough sketches and was on the hunt for a team,

luckily, I found two great artists from Argentina, Julio Falkenhagen and what good

pencils, Maria Orozco; a great eye for colour from indie publisher, Juanmar Studios

and Kenny Jeffery he would be letterer – who is also local in London. So, it was

sorted, I’d be the inker and provide them with script and layouts.

It was down to work, Julio really nailed the style I was going for – an American

Manga style. Christopher Hart is my inspiration for art; he is a brilliant artist and

author who was famous in doing “How to” Books for Manga such as “Manga Mania”.

Two of his books I own, one of them which had impacted my own artwork were

“Drawing Cutting Edge Fusion: American Comics with a Manga Influence” plus

“How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains”. He is also a writer and director for

TV and Film, writing for studios like NBC and Paramount. When I showed Julio my

character designs, he took it to a whole new level. With his help the characters

have come to life. I had so much fun inking his comic book pages; the buildings,

actions scenes, shadows, poses, the lot. I did my best to bring texture, fluidity and

roughness to the line work of his drawings.

The second half of this issue was a challenge but I believe I managed to pull it off.

Get ready for issue 2 readers, the hunt has just begun.
