Brief introductionNelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18 1918 in Cape Province, South Africa. In later years he was known as Madiba.His father was Mphakanyiswa Mandela and his mother was Nosekeni Mandela.

He was a South African anti-apartheid (antiracist) revolutionary, politician and philanthropist.Madiba died on December 5 2013 at the age of 95, at his home in Johannesburg.Why is he so famous?

Mandela is famous for promoting a message of forgiveness and equality. Hell be remembered around the world for his message of peace and unity. Also he is famous for becoming the first black presidentof his country after spending 27 years in jail an is held up as one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.

Professional achievements

Mandela was one of the few black people in 1950s South Africa to receive an education and become a lawyer.He was the first non-white head of state in South African history, as well as the first to take office following the dismantling of apartheid and the introduction of multiracial democracy (1994-1999).Professional achievements

In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the highest honor of its kind, for his work. He received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin.Nelson Mandela has received more than 250 awards that are in every way honorable. PHYSICAL APPEARANCE Nelson Mandela was 1.84m tall.His skin was brown.His eyes were black.He was a skinny person, but he look like a strong person.

His physical appearance fitted the image, and the dreams that people had of him.

He became one of the world's most popular leaders, with politicians and celebrities queuing up to have their photo taken with him.He was typically friendly and welcoming, and appeared relaxed in conversation with everyone, including his opponents.

Personal lifeMandela was a private person who often concealed his emotions and confided in very few people.Mandela was married three times, fathered six children, had 17 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

His first marriage was toEvelyn Ntoko Mase,they divorced after 13 years in 1957 under the multiple strains of his adultery and constant absences, devotion to revolutionary agitation. The couple had two sons and two daughters.Mandela's second wife wasWinnie Madikizela-Mandela.They had two daughters.
