Purpose of the NAPOTYThe purpose of this award is to select the Nebraska Angus Association member who has

contributed the most to the advancement of the Angus business & their community; to recognize that member for their efforts & work expended in the interest of the Angusbreed; to demonstrate to the public the place of the member in their community; & to callattention to the qualifications of these members for positions of leadership in the breed andits organizations. It is not a requirement that nominees must have served as State Association President but the nominee must be a current member of the Nebraska AngusAssociation.

Each Angus producer in the state of Nebraska is invited to submit the name of one nominee, accompanied by a completed application form and supporting information. TheNAPOTY will be selected by an anonymous selection committee comprised of current Nebraska Angus Association members, one from each district of the State Association. Theprevious year NAPOTY winner will serve as chair of the selection committee.

Suggested standards for the nominations may be based on the following guidelines:1. Angus Spirit – (25%) high principles of integrity, adherence to the “Golden

Rule”, good ethics among other breeders and the pubic2. Civic Activity – (15%) local, state, national level participation in civic service

clubs, charitable activities, political work, fraternal & religiou groups

3. Business Accomplishments – (20%) recognize good business conduct, service to buyers & sellers of Angus animals, advertising programs used & creative marketing

4. Local Area Activity – (15%) board offices & committee work, special assignments, educational work

5. State Association Activity – (20%) offices held & committee work, attendance & exhibiting at the State shows, director meetings & shows attended

6. National Association Acitivity (5%) national offices held, committee work, attendance at the Annual meeting, regional shows, etc.

Producer of the Year Producer of the Year Craig Dethlefs

Angus blood runs four generations deep in this year’s Ne-braska Angus Producer of the Year. His family has raisedAngus cattle since 1950, and he owned Angus cattle nearly

his entire life, receiving his first heifer from his parents before hewas even old enough to join 4-H. As he grew, so did his herd innumbers and he also joined FFA and the Nebraska and NationalJunior Angus Associations. Craig was involved in many aspectsof FFA receiving the State Degree award. He participated in manyshows and contests in 4-H and the Nebraska and National JuniorAngus Associations including cook-off, judging and showman-ship placing in the top 15 at Nationals. Craig’s livestock judgingcareer started at a very young age and continued with competingat Nationals in 4-H and alsoon the Collegiate level. Hecontinued his passion forjudging by coaching nu-merous county 4-H teamstaking four of them to na-tional competition.

While Craig made thedecision to further his edu-cation with eight years ofcollege, the decision to slowdown on the growing cattleherd was necessary. He soldmost of his cows to helppay his tuition while he at-tended school earning hisAnimal Science Degree &Veterinary medicine degree.During his senior year ofvet school Craig purchasedCole Creek Juanadalere167U and she became the

foundation of his current cow herd. Craig began utilizing embryotransfer in 1992 which has allowed him to build a small herd ofoutstanding females.

His hard work in building his cowherd has reaped many bene-fits as has exhibited and sold champion and high selling femalesat the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in the past. Craig has addedVAR Beauty 7211, EF Forever Lady 026 and most recently SAVEmblynette 3611 to his donor line up. He continues his quest forhigh quality cattle with the performance, phenotype and pedigreethat he desires.

Craig and his wife, Laurie and their three daughters reside inNorth Platte while most of his cows are run with his parents’ herdon their ranch near Ravenna. The show cattle and donor cows arehoused at his home place 12 miles southwest of North Platte.Craig and Laurie’s girls, Aliesha, Emily and Kacey have their ownshow careers and all them own some cows of their own. Recentshow highlights for the girls include 2013 Grand Champion steerat the Jr. National Show and 2013 Nebraska Cattlemen’s ClassicGrand Champion Angus Female/Supreme Champion Female; the2014 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Grand Champion AngusBull/Supreme Champion Bull; and the 2014 Champion AngusSteer/British Breed Champion at the Nebraska State Fair.

Craig believes in giving back to those groups that have made adifference in his life. He was been very involved in the NebraskaAngus Association, and followed in his father’s footsteps by serv-ing a total of seven years on the board, first as director then mov-ing into the officer roles, serving the Association as President in2008. He and Laurie served as Advisors to the Nebraska JuniorAss’n from 2012-2014.

Craig has served as a mentor and role model to many youngAngus breeders including his three daughters sharing his passionfor the breed and adult and junior associations. Even thoughCraig has had some adversity to overcome these past two years, ithas not stopped him in continuing to actively promote Angus cat-tle. Craig becomes our first, second generationProducer of the Year.

Hall Ranch is located in Keya Paha and Rock counties in northcentral Nebraska, straddling the scenic Niobrara River. With amix of sandhills and hard grass hills the operation runs regis-

tered Black Angus cow/calf pairs, yearlings and sells two year oldAngus bulls at their annual production sale.

Ed and Carolyn’s maternal great grandfather and uncle purchasedthe original land 13 miles northeast of Bassett in Keya Paha in Februaryof 1901. Their grandparents Bert & Minnie Genung managed the ranchfrom December of 1901 until Lou and Louise Genung Hall came in 1937to raise their family and manage the ranch.

Ed and Carolyn Hall were given a fatherly push into the registeredAngus business when he convinced them to purchase 20 Bardoliermere,Blackcap and Eileenmere cows at a dispersion sale in 1960. By 1965 theywere selling bulls via private treaty.

Ed and his wife, Betty, as-sumed management in 1966.Here they raised Les, Kyla andCody and all continued in theAngus tradition. As Angus pro-ducers, the family has servedthe Association in several capac-ities through the years. Ed was aNebraska Angus Board Presi-dent. All three of the Hall chil-dren were active in the JuniorAngus Association showing cat-tle and serving as officers. Kylawas a member of the NationalJunior Angus board and Leshas been a past director for the state association.

Replacements were home-raised until the early 1970’s when someEmulous-bred cattle were introduced. Breeding in the 1980’s saw use ofLone Star and Paragon. The family had their first production sale in 1981and will hold their 34th Annual Bull Sale in March 2015.

Les, his wife, Rachel and their son Craig, returned to the ranch in1992. Demand for Angus females and Les’ return prompted the use of ar-tificial insemination, which is a driving force in this family owned opera-tion.

Loy & Norma Jean Glause's Lazy Black Diamond Ranch traces backto 1951 when Loy began with his father and brothers. Loy's father,Philip William Glause, & sons began purchasing registered Angus

cattle in 1951 and operated as the Black Diamond Ranch near Worms,NE. Black Diamond Ranch was officially registered with the AmericanAngus Association on March 16, 1956. Not more than a year later, Loy &Norma Jean (Jeanie) Glause were married on March 2, 1957. The youngcouple lived on a farm southwest of Worms where they began their fam-ily while farming and raising Angus cattle with Loy's father and broth-ers.

In 1962, Loy & Jeanie moved to a farm 2 miles southeast of Palmeralong Hwy 92 - the current operating location of Lazy Black DiamondRanch. Over the next decade, they expanded their cow herd as well astheir family. With the potential of their children showing registered cat-tle and the need for membership with the association, Loy & Jeanie de-cided to continue their own operation under a separate name. So, onApril 4th, 1973, Loy & Jeanie officially registered their Angus ranch withthe American Angus Association calling it "Lazy Black Diamond Ranch".

Lazy Black Diamond Ranch sold private treaty for several years,then from the late 70's to the mid 80's, they held a joint annual produc-tion sale at the "3rd City" sale barn in Grand Island along with Loy'sbrother Paul. When Paul dispersed his herd in 1985, Loy returned to pri-vate treaty sales to market his breeding stock. At the same time, sonKevin became more involved by expanding his cow numbers in the herd.Son Clayton began adding some purchases in the mid 90's, & son Brianmade his 1st purchases in 2003 to add to the herd. In the summer of2009, when Loy learned that he had kidney cancer, he & Jeanie decidedto sell their share of the cows to son's Kevin & Galen. Galen's son Mor-gan also purchased sev-eral of their heifers.

Loy passed away thefollowing spring on April12, 2010. Loy lovedworking on the farmwhere he and Jeanie rantheir cow herd and rowcropped about 250 acresof corn. They also oper-ated a roadside vegetablestand from 1964-1990,which was an integralpart of helping raise their13 children (6 girls & 7boys). various vegetables were a staple at the Glause family's crowded dinnertable.

Today, Jeanie and daughter Elaine continue to live on the farm andstill serve as helping hands when needed. Son Kevin manages the cowherd and farming operation along with help from son's Galen, Brian,Clayton, and grandson Morgan. The herd consists of about 300 cows de-scending from herd sires purchased and raised. Most of their stock ismarketed at the farm by private treaty sales where they sell about 130bulls and 90 heifers each year. They have also entered bulls to the Ne-braska Bull Test and the Cattlemen's Classic in Kearney. Kevin is an ac-tive board member of the Nebraska Bull Test, and Clayton served on theNebraska Angus Association Board as Northeast Director, Vice President,and President.

Loy's passion for Angus cattle was evident in that he always enjoyedvisiting with his Angus customers, fellow breeders, and enthusiastswhile promoting the breed. He & Jeanie also enjoyed traveling to a num-ber of sales with family and friends both in and out of state. They werealways prospecting for their next herd sire and given plenty of opinionsfrom their boys. The gift of Agriculture and Angus cattle have been agreat blessing to the Glause family. It has been the platform by whichLoy & Jeanie raised their family and taught them the values of hardwork & responsibility. Loy's love for living the farm/ranch life, his en-thusiasm & interest in breeding Angus genetics, and raising afamily of 13 with Jeanie was the highlight of his life.
