Originally founded by Algernon Johnson “A.J.” Cooper in 1968, the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) is a non-profit organization created to articulate and promote the professional needs and goals of Black law students, foster and encourage professional competence, and focus upon the relationship of Black attorneys to the American legal structure.
The Northeast Region of the National Black Law Students Association (NEBLSA) has over 1000 diverse members at over 33 schools. For over 40 years, NEBLSA has been a valuable resource to thousands of practicing black attorneys. We are dedicated to our mission of developing talented black attorneys and advocate for nearly 1,000 of tomorrow’s brightest legal minds.
NEBLSA strives to provide our members with the knowledge, network and skills necessary for success in the study and practice of law. With your support and contribution, we will continue to develop programming focused on student development and growth.
Our regional programming provides an unique opportunity to position our members for success after law school. We expect members from all 33 chapters for:
• Leadership Retreat. NEBLSA kicks off the year by providing Chapter Leaders with preparation training for a successful year.
• Job Fair. Diverse students join over 50 regional employers in one of the largest diversity fairs in the country.
• Welcome Reception. NEBLSA hosts alumni and current members in the first networking event of the year.
• Academic Retreat and Law School Symposium. Legal scholars, professors and practicing attorneys partake in panel discussions and individual lectures on important academic and professional issues.
• Community Service Week. NEBLSA has adopted a community service theme for the year, P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S. NEBLSA will specifically focus on school-age mentoring, non-profit organization partnership and professional development.
• Membership Retreat. NEBLSA hosts a retreat for members every year. Members have an opportunity to network, and continue to build essential academic and professional skills.
• Scholarship. Each year NEBLSA awards scholarships to exceptional high school students interested in pursuing a career in the field of law.
Additionally, we expect 300 law students to join us January 26-30, 2011 for our Regional Convention in Connecticut for community service, workshops, and competitions.
We hope to feature you as a 2011 NEBLSA Regional Sponsor. We appreciate your commitment to diversity, and are excited about the possibility of partnering with you this year.
Kind regards,
