Near field communication

introduction

• NFC :Near Field Communication

• short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions between electronic devices.

• Enables the exchange of data between devices over a distance of up to 20 centimeters

HOW NFC WORKS?

• NFC is based on RFID technology • communication between electronic devices in close

proximity NFC operates at 13.56MHZ.

• For two devices to communicate using NFC, one device must have a NFC reader/writer and one must have an NFC tag.

Initial roll-outs on mobiles

• Mobiles are portable, ubiquitous and can be personalized• NFC Mobiles with a payment application are compatible with the infrastructure

being deployed for contactless cards– Mobiles can:

• Display data (pick up info from smart posters, show receipts and loyalty coupons)

• Store information (ticketing, access control)

Standardization bodies NFC was approved as an ISO/IEC standard on

DEC8 ,2003. These standards specify the modulation schemes , coding, transfer speeds and frame format

Market for nfc

By 2013 one in 5 phones will have NFC.

The analyst forecast the gross transaction value of made via NFC will exceed $75bn globally by 2013.

Japan is the early adopter of NFC with felica-enabled phones.

Trails conducted nfc technology

Several hundred NFC trials have been conducted till date. While NFC trials continue, some firms have moved to full-scale service deployments,

•Multiple European countries: banks, retailers, transport, and service providers.

Nfc has multiple uses

Nfc security The communication range of NFC is limited to a few

centimeters.

NFC alone does not ensure secure communications.

Applications may use higher-layer cryptographic protocols to establish a secure channel.

customers, who will need to protect their personal devices and data with passwords, keypad locks, and anti-virus software.

Types of securities

EAVES DROPPING

DATA MODIFICATION

RELAY ATTACK

NFC SECURITY

The RF signal for the wireless data transfer can be picked up with antennas.

The distance from which an attacker is able to eavesdrop the

RF signal depends on numerous parameters.

Eavesdropping

NFC SECURITY

It is relatively easy to destroy data by using an RFID jammer.

There is no way currently to prevent such an attack. However, if NFC devices check the RF field while they are sending, it is possible to detect attacks.

NFC VS OTHER TECHNOLOGIES

ADVANTAGES OF NFC• easy to use and learn

• Easy to set-up

• Low cost

• No special software

NFC disadvantages

• It is slow when compared to Bluetooth

• The device get connected when data transfer rate is less

• Power consumption is comparatively more .

Near Field Communication represents an extremely interesting technology nowadays, that offers the possibility to modify the whole payment system and as a consequence people’s habit in money usage.

Currently, it is possible to conclude that NFC promises appear credible, as major players in mobile services (Google and Apple included) are already working to make them real and tangible to the society. Given such effort, we’ll probably experience in the next months the first launch of smart phones/mobile wallets and soon be able to understand whether this will represent a clear breakthrough for the people around the world.
