JOhN GAGLIARDIA Coach for the Ages

John gagliardi is probably not as well known as eddie Robinson, but his accomplishments are no less remarkable. Both coaches are known as great teachers, men whose lives touched many young college student-athletes and molded them into responsible adults.

gagliardi became the winningest coach in college football history in 2003 by passing Robinson and heads into this season (his 62nd) with 471 career wins.

Fifty-seven of gagliardi’s seasons have been at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. gagliardi’s biggest strength is his ability to relate to his players and get them to play hard even though they receive no scholarships based on athletics ability. in fact, his basic philosophy is boiled down to “Winning With nos.” That is:

* no spring practices; * no scholarships; * no compulsory weightlifting program; * no calling him “coach”— players call him John; * no long practices — an hour and a half or less; and * no tackling in practice — players wear shorts or sweats.gagliardi began his remarkable career in 1949 at Carroll College (Montana), where he coached

for four seasons before assuming the St. John’s head position in 1953. He is now coaching in his sev-enth decade and seems fit enough to continue well into the new century. He passed the legendary Amos Alonzo Stagg in coaching longevity at 58 years in 2006.

His career includes 27 Minnesota intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and four national championships (1963, 1965, 1976 and 2003). Age in Career CareerVictory No. (Date Reached Milestone) Yrs.-Days Game (Record) Yr.-Game
