IN RECENT MONTHS, the Board of Directors, which I am honoured to chair, hasannounced two new projects approved by members at the AGM and which havegenerated mostly favourable public opinion. I’m referring to two major projects affecting the Club, but also the town ofPollença. One is the creation of a floating pontoon on the Albercuix beach withmoorings for 62 boats of up to 8 metres LOA, both for members and non-mem-bers. The other refers to the regulation of anchoring in the Bay of Pollença, whichwill end the current disorder and chaos by creating a buoy mooring ground next toour facilities. Upon gaining the relevant permits from the Department for Coastal Protection andPortsIB, both the floating pontoon and the buoy mooring ground will be managed,under a permit or government concession, by RCNPP. Without a doubt, these two projects are particularly important for the town ofPollença, for its bay - which is the gateway to the north of Mallorca - and for the Clubitself. The main goal is to regulate nearshore anchoring for us all to benefit from safe-ty at sea, protected bathing areas, a lower risk of discharges at sea, improved wastecollection, an uncontaminated seabed and, in general, cleaner water. They are all very laudable goals that have been successfully implemented in otherareas of Mallorca such as Puerto de Andratx, and that affect public interest, with-out major side effects. Both because they generate more resources for the govern-ment and because they relieve pressure on public management, contributing to abetter environment and image of the Bay.Both projects are part of our commitment to social responsibility with the townof Pollença, but also feature in our perception that, after seven long years offinancial crisis and lack of public and private investment, now is the historicalmoment to take a stance. Convinced as I am that our Club is a fundamental part of Pollença, I also firmlybelieve that our beautiful Bay will soon stop being a tourist-friendly asset unlesswe all take actions, and scrupulously well-made ones at that, to improve it. I believe it was Giuseppe di Lampedusa who in “The Leopard” coined the famousphrase that is sometimes necessary to remember: “everything must change so thateverything can stay the same”. Well, for those who believe that our commitment isreduced to a financial interest of securing more resources, I would like to remind youthat, by law, our ultimate objective is not profit or financial gain, but the promotion ofsport and social activities that are in the public interest. Our goal is not for change so that the image of the Bay of Pollença remains the sameor worsens on a path of slow but relentless deterioration. Quite the contrary.With the full conviction that we are a very unique Club, anchored in a beautifulbay that is part of a truly special town, with geographical, cultural, historical andsocial features that must be protected, we intend to form a new private-public ven-ture with the government by means of an environmental co-management modelthat is in the best public interest. Therefore, we want to improve the Club and its environment, renew the govern-ment concession with maximum guarantees and ultimately contribute to improv-ing the image of Pollença.We will persevere with this endeavour, even though we are immersed in a politically-taxing time which will hopefully be resolved in an intelligent, pragmatic and positive way. From this perspective, we would like to ask members for a vote of confidence andsome extra patience during the soon to reopen negotiation process on the renew-al of the concession, which we hope will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

EN LOS ÚLTIMOS MESES la Junta Directiva, que me honra presidir, ha hecho públicos dos nue-vos proyectos, aprobados por los socios en Asamblea General, que han generado corrientessociales de opinión mayoritariamente favorables. Me refiero, en concreto, a dos proyectos importantes que afectan al Club, pero también almunicipio de Pollença. Uno, es la creación de un pantalán flotante en la playa de Albercuix, con capacidad para ama-rrar 62 embarcaciones de pequeñas esloras hasta 8 metros, tanto de socios como no socios. Elotro se refiere a la regulación del fondeo en la bahía de Pollença, poniendo fin al descontrol ycaos actuales, a través de la creación de un campo de boyas anexo a nuestras instalaciones. De obtenerse los permisos pertinentes de Demarcació de Costes y de PortsIB, tanto el panta-lán flotante como el campo de boyas serán gestionados, en régimen de permiso o concesiónadministrativa, por el RCNPP. Se trata, sin lugar a dudas, de dos proyectos de especial relevancia para el municipio dePollença, para su bahía, que es puerta de entrada del norte de Mallorca, y para el propio Club.Su objetivo principal es la regulación del fondeo costero de manera que ganemos todos enseguridad de navegación, en respeto a las zonas de baño, en control de vertidos al mar y derecogida de basuras, en protección de los fondos marinos y en su propia limpieza. Objetivos todos ellos muy loables que se han puesto en marcha con éxito en otras zonas deMallorca como el puerto de Andratx y que redundan, sin mayores efectos secundarios, en elinterés común. Tanto porque generan más recursos para la Administración como porque alige-ran la gestión pública, contribuyendo a la mejora medioambiental y de la imagen de la bahía.Ambos proyectos forman parte de nuestro compromiso de responsabilidad social con el muni-cipio de Pollença, pero también se integran en nuestra percepción de que, después de siete lar-gos años de crisis económica y de letargo de inversiones públicas y privadas, ha llegado elmomento histórico de actuar. Convencido como estoy de que nuestro Club Náutico es parte fundamental de Pollença, tam-bién lo estoy de que nuestra preciosa bahía dejará pronto de ser una marca con plusvalía turís-tica si, entre todos, no emprendemos acciones bien hechas, escrupulosamente bien hechas,para mejorarla. Creo que fue Giuseppe di Lampedusa quien, en “El Gatopardo”, acuñó la famosa frase de que,en ocasiones, se hace preciso que “todo cambie para que todo siga igual”. Pues bien, paraquienes crean que nuestro compromiso se reduce al interés crematístico de conseguir másrecursos quiero recordarles que, por ley, nuestro objetivo último no es el lucro o la obtención debeneficios económicos, sino la promoción del deporte y la realización de acciones sociales queredunden en el interés general. No pretendemos que algo cambie para que la imagen de la bahía de Pollença siga igual o peor,en la senda del lento pero implacable deterioro. Al contrario.Desde la plena convicción de que somos un Club muy singular, anclado en una maravillosabahía que forma parte de un municipio único, con singularidades geográficas, culturales, histó-ricas y poblaciones que es preciso proteger, pretendemos hacer con la Administración un nuevotándem público privado, a través de un modelo de cogestión medioambiental que redunde enel interés general. Por todo ello queremos mejorar el Club y su entorno, renovar la Concesión administrativa con elmáximo de garantías y contribuir, en definitiva, a la mejora de la imagen de Pollença.En ese empeño vamos a seguir perseverando, a pesar de que nos encontramos inmersos en unmomento políticamente muy complicado que esperemos se resuelva de forma inteligente, prag-mática y positiva. Desde esta perspectiva solicitamos un voto de confianza a los socios y pedimos un “extra” depaciencia mientras se desarrolle el proceso de negociación que se abrirá nuevamente para larenovación de la concesión, que esperamos se resolverá para la satisfacción de todos.

El Consejo de Administración de PortsIB,reunido en junio, decidió reiniciar el procesoadministrativo para la reapertura del proce-dimiento de adaptación que debe fijar elnuevo cálculo de valoración del Club y, enconsecuencia, el nuevo Canon anual. Esta decisión de Ports significa, de hecho, lareapertura de todo el proceso de negocia-ción para la renovación de la concesiónadministrativa. También supone un balón deoxígeno para las arcas del Club porque pro-vocará el desbloqueo de los avales banca-rios que el RCNPP, para no incurrir en ilegali-dad administrativa, se ha visto obligado apresentar estos últimos años. La reapertura del procedimiento se ha pro-ducido, en gran parte, como consecuenciadel reposicionamiento del Club con respectoal proceso de adaptación, y en parte tam-bién como consecuencia del acatamientode la Sentencia Judicial en torno a uno de

los dos recursos ContenciosoAdministrativos que el Club presentó contrael Decreto Ley 10/2005 que establecía elnuevo Canon anual. La base jurídica argumental del Club sebasó en la apreciación de un defecto deforma en el proceso legal legislativo y en ladisconformidad con respecto a los criteriosde fijación del nuevo Canon, que experimen-tó una subida de 22.000 a 450.000 eurosy finalmente quedó en 260.000 anuales. Enreiteradas ocasiones el aumento de Canonde valoración del Bien ocupado, (fijado porel mencionado DL 10/2005), ha sido califi-cado por distintas juntas directivas del Clubcomo “desproporcionado e insostenible”.Como sea, esta decisión de PortsIB hasido valorada positiva, pero prudentemen-te, por parte de la presidencia del Club. Seentiende que se trata de un importantepunto de inflexión que obliga a las partes

a reiniciar todo el proceso de valoración delas instalaciones. Sin embargo también seha querido mostrar prudencia en torno altema, dada la inminente renovación decargos en las distintas consellerias delGovern, lo que puede suponer, de hecho,un nuevo retraso en el largo proceso denegociación con la Direcció General dePorts i Aeroports del Govern Balear, enaras de llegar a un acuerdo satisfactorio.Tras la renovación de las concesiones alClub Náutico de Santa Ponta y PuertoPortals, el Club Náutic de Pollença es elúnico, dependiente de PortsIB, que no harenovado todavía la concesión.

El Club Náutico de Santa Ponça y PuertoPortals han llegado a un acuerdo con elPortsIB para actualizar su canon. El BOIBpublicó, poco después de las elecciones,a principios de junio, las valoraciones deambos puertos deportivos: Portals vale34,4 millones y Santa Ponça 1,5 millo-nes. Ambos clubes han llegado a unacuerdo con la Administración paraadaptarse a la Ley de Puertos deBaleares y actualizar sus cánones deocupación del espacio público.En el caso de Portals, considerado unode los puertos más exclusivos delMediterráneo, los técnicos han calculadoun valor de 34.447.182 euros para unasuperficie de 89.994 metros cuadradosen tierra y 111.107 de espejo de agua. La valoración del Club Náutico de SantaPonça asciende a 11.531627 euros y esdefinitiva, puesto que ya ha expirado elplazo de alegaciones y cuenta con elinforme favorable de los servicios jurídi-cos de la Consejería de Turismo. Estainstalación tiene 45.833 metros cuadra-dos de superficie en tierra y un espejode agua de 42.062. Mencionando fuentes de Ports IBGaceta Náutica publicó que la propie-dad de la empresa que explota PuertoPortals habría aceptado abonar 1,7millones anuales por este concepto,mientras que Santa Ponça pagará algomás de 500.000 euros. En ambos casoslas concesiones se prolongarán por unperíodo de 35 años a contar desde lafecha de la firma del nuevo contrato. Tras la adaptación de estos dos puertosdeportivos, tan sólo el RCNPP quedapendiente de renovar la concesión.

nes de 12 metros, 76 para embarcacionesde 10 metros y 36 para embarcaciones de8 metros de eslora.El proyecto técnico de regulación de fondeoses parte de una petición expresa de Portsque quiere que el Club asuma la gestión dela concesión de estas nuevas instalaciones.Se espera que la concesión o el permisopertinentes se materialicen en 2016.

Club Náutico de Santa Ponça and PuertoPortals have reached an agreement withPorts IB to update their fees. Shortlyafter the elections in early June, theBalearic Island Official Gazette publishedthe valuations of the two marinas,Portals being worth 34.4 million eurosand Santa Ponça 1.5 million euros. Bothmarinas have signed an agreement withthe government to adapt to the BalearicPorts Law and update their fees for theoccupancy of public space. In the case of Portals, considered one ofthe Mediterranean’s most exclusiveports, experts have calculated a value of34,447,182 euros for a land area of89,994 square metres and 111,107 ofwater surface. The valuation of Club Náutico de SantaPonça comes to 1,531,627 euros and isfinal, as the deadline for counterclaimshas expired and the report from theMinistry of Tourism is favourable. This faci-lity has a land area of 45,833 squaremetres and a water surface of 42,062. Mentioning Ports IB sources, GacetaNáutica stated that the owners of thecompany operating Puerto Portals hadaccepted to pay 1.7 million euros per yearfor this amount, whilst Santa Ponça willpay just over 500,000 euros. In bothcases, the concessions will last 35 yearsfrom the date of signing the new contract. After these two ports agreeing to adaptto the Ports Law, only Reial Club NáuticPort de Pollença has still to renew itsconcession.

Se emplea en francés yespañol con el significado de «suerte provi-dencial». En general se dice que alguien«tiene baraka» cuando ha superado favora-blemente una situación muy peligrosa. Lapalabra entró en el idioma francés en tiem-pos de la colonización francesa de Argelia.

The Board of Directors of PortsIB, at ameeting in June, decided to relaunch theadministrative process for the reopeningof the adjustment procedure to set thenew calculation of the Club’s valuation,and as a result, the new annual fees. This decision by PortsIB actually entails

reopening the entire negotiation processfor the renewal of the government con-cession. It also throws a lifeline to theClub coffers because it will unblock thebank guarantees that RCNPP, in order toavoid administrative illegality, has beenforced to present in recent years. The reopening of the procedure cameabout mainly as a result of the Club’snew position on the adjustment proce-dure, but also partly due to the obser-vance of the judicial ruling regarding oneof the two appeals that the Club filedagainst the Decree Law 10/2005, whichsets the new annual fees.

The Club’s argument is based on notic-ing a procedural error in the legalprocess and on disagreeing with the cri-teria used to set the new fees, whichshot up from 22,000 to 450,000 eurosand finally 260.000 per year. On numer-ous occasions, the increase in the valua-tion fees of an occupied public space(set by the aforementioned DL10/2005)has been labelled by Club directors as“disproportionate and unfounded”. Whatever happens, this decision byPortsIB has been recognised as positiveby the Club chairman. It is seen as animportant turning point that forces allparties to reconsider the entire valuationprocess. However, caution has also beenaired, given the imminent reshuffle ofgovernment departments, which in factcould mean a further delay in the longnegotiation process with the BalearicDepartment of Ports and Airports, in theinterest of reaching a satisfactory agree-ment. After the renewal of the ClubNáutico de Santa Ponta and PuertoPortals concessions, the Club Náutic dePollença is the only one dependent onPortsIB still to renew its concession.

MANAGEMENT OF FLOATINGPONTOON ON ALBERCUIXResponding to a request from theCoastal Authority, the Club will manage anew floating berth pontoon on theAlbercuix beach with a capacity for 62boats between 4 and 8 metres LOA.The General Members’ Meeting gavethe go-ahead in April to this interestingproposal from the Balearic CoastalAuthority which is right now in a periodof administrative procedure, with theidea that it could start operating as soonas possible. The chairman of the Club, Alan Ponte,thanked members and the public author-ities for the confidence placed in theClub. Likewise, he took advantage of theoccasion to underline the Club’s commit-ment to the Bay and to guarantee itshelp in controlling the “abuse” of watersby the so-called “pirate mooring”, whichhas been going on for many years now.“Our goal is to help keep the Bay as oneof the most beautiful in the Balearics”,he added.

TALKS WITH PORTSIB ABOUT THEMANAGEMENT OF A BUOY MOORINGFIELD NEXT TO THE CLUBThe Club is in talks with Ports de les IllesBalears about the installation and opera-tion of two hundred new eco-buoys in theBay for yachts up to 25 metres LOA. The new buoy mooring ground would belocated between the current breakwater ofthe Club and the military base. The project,which was displayed at the clubhouse andpresented at the last annual meeting, con-siders the installation of 3 deadman moor-ings for yachts up to twenty-five metresLOA, 13 for twenty-metre boats, 28 for fif-teen-metre boats, 44 for 12-metre boats,76 for ten-metre boats and 36 for eight-metre boats. The mooring regulation proj-ect is part of specific request from Ports IB

for the Club to manage the concession ofthese new facilities. The concession isexpected to come into force in 2016.

THREE MEMBERS OF HONOURResponding to a proposal by the Board ofDirectors, the General Members’ Meetingapproved the appointment of three mem-bers of honour. These are three mem-bers who have stood out in sport andtaken part in various Olympic Games.The first is Eduardo Bellini Ferrer, mem-ber of the Spanish windsurfing team atLos Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988. Thesecond is José Luis Pepote Ballester,Tornado Class sailor at Barcelona 1992and gold medallist at Atlanta 1996. Andthe third is Alfonso Sete Benavides,Olympic diploma in canoe sprint at

London 2012 and bronze medallist atthe 2013 World Championships.

BARAKA, NEW RACE COMMITTEE BOAT The Club recently renewed the race commit-tee boat, replacing the archaic Pescadu with aFaetón Moraga 7.80. This new boat, largerand more powerful, will also be used by otherClub divisions, not just sailing, allowing othercompetitions such as fishing to be followed.The Arabic word baraka or barakah means“divine blessing”. It is used in French andSpanish with the meaning of “providentialluck”. On the whole, it is said that someone“has baraka” when they successfully over-come a very dangerous situation. The wordentered into the French language at the timeof the colonisation of Algeria.

Niños del Club limpian Cala Murta y Cala En Feliude la mano de Coca-Cola y Ecomar

Cala Murta y Cala En Feliu, fueron losescenarios elegidos por el Club para quelos 40 niños voluntarios llevasen a caboesta limpieza de costas. Esta iniciativa,creada por la Fundación Ecomar e impul-sada por Coca-Cola, tiene por objetivoconcienciar a los más pequeños sobre laimportancia que tiene evitar ensuciarnuestros mares y costas.Los niños llegaron hasta las calas enneumáticas. El ambiente, fue en todomomento divertido y especialmente moti-vador gracias también al apoyo de losmonitores del club y de su director,Diego Riera, así como de los equipos deSalvamento y Socorrismo del ayunta-miento. The atmosphere was at all timesfun and especially motivating thanksalso to the support of the Club monitorsand their boss, Diego Riera, as well asthe council’s maritime rescue teams.Prior to the clean-up, the two-timeOlympic sailing champion and chair-woman of the Fundación Ecomar,Theresa Zabell, gave a talk explaininghow most waste reaches the coast andwhat we can do to avoid this, underliningthe importance of protecting and lookingafter the marine ecosystem. Este próximo mes de agosto se cumplirá el primer año de mandato de la nueva JuntaDirectiva presidida por Alan Ponte. Han sido once meses complicados desde el punto devista interno. La crisis interna que provocó una moción de censura contra la anterior Juntase cerró, de hecho, en noviembre de 2014 en el transcurso de una Asamblea general en laque se presentó el resultado de una auditoría interna. En esa Asamblea, la nueva Junta reci-bió formalmente el apoyo mayoritario de los socios. En ella se aprobó la liquidación de cuen-tas del club del ejercicio 2013, los presupuestos de 2014 y un avance de los presupuestospara 2015. La base para empezar a trabajar.

Como resultado de ello hoy seguimosfuncionando con esas inercias, a pesar deque la realidad plantea la necesidad deinvertir no menos de 5 millones de euros enla puesta al día, conservación, mantenimien-to y actualización de las infraestructurasesenciales. Hay que modificar las torretas deluz y agua, hay que renovar completamentelos baños que tienen ya 25 años, hay quereformar la zona del edificio de capitanía,hay que crear un espacio para la escuela devela, hay que ampliar amarres, etc. Hay queponerlo todo al día. Yo no tengo la varita mágica parasaber qué va a ocurrir. Algunos dicen que nose va a permitir hacer nada de nada, otros,sin embargo, son más optimistas y opinande forma diferente. Nosotros somos el terceragente económico generador de empleo enel Puerto de Pollensa, después delAyuntamiento y los hoteles. El Club propor-ciona empleos directos, pero tambiénmucha riqueza y trabajo de forma indirecta.Estamos estrechamente imbricados en lasociedad y en la economía de Pollença.Formamos parte de ella. De manera quepara que esta economía de escala siga fun-cionando interactivamente con la sociedad,el Club debe estar en muy buenas condicio-nes de competitividad. Para eso es precisoestablecer un plan estratégico de gestiónadecuado que garantice su supervivenciaen el marco de un entorno geográfico ypoblacional adecuado, medioambientalmen-te sostenible y económicamente viable”.

Sin embargo, en el orden de prioridades laprimera debe ser conseguir la seguridadde renovar la concesión ¿o no?“Efectivamente. La situación ahora mismoes complicada. Ports tiene que aceptar elcriterio establecido en sentencia dictada porel Juez sobre el Recurso ContenciosoAdministrativo que el Club presentó con refe-rencia a la forma y el contenido de las basesque se establecieron en su día para la valo-ración del Club y el posterior establecimientodel canon. Nuestro recurso ha prosperado y

Esperamos que estasentencia sirva para que Ports revise ahorala situación y que se aproveche la ocasiónpara renovar el procedimiento de adapta-ción que fijará un nuevo cálculo de valora-ción y nuevo canon”.¿Entramos en una nueva fase?“Sí. ¿qué otra problemática quieren abordar?“Nos gustaría mucho poder modificar elReal Decreto que fija los criterios que rigenlos Estatutos de las Asociaciones deportivas.Bajo nuestro punto de vista estos Estatutosimpuestos por la Dirección General deDeportes son quizás de gran utilidad paraun Club de petanca de un pueblo deMallorca, donde todos son residentes, perono son de utilidad para un Club como elnuestro en el que la masa social está com-puesta por un 60% de no residentes en

Baleares. Casi el 20% de nuestros sociosson españoles residentes en la península yun 40% son extranjeros. Esta circunstanciacomplica enormemente los procesos electo-rales y de toma de decisiones democráticasde nuestro Club. Es una situación absurdaque necesita una revisión en profundidad”.Pero ¿no pueden ustedes modificar losEstatutos?“No en los aspectos básicos que he mencio-nado. Pero además se plantean otras cues-tiones que nos gustaría abordar como, porejemplo, el tema de los socios deportivos.No podemos estatutariamente tener sociosdeportivos. Una barbaridad si tenemos encuenta que el objetivo de un club náuticocomo el nuestro es precisamente el fomentode los deportes relacionados con el mar. Esabsurdo porque, evidentemente, el futuro decualquier Club náutico está ligado a la juven-tud, tanto si son hijos del socio como resi-dentes en el pueblo. Muchos de estos niñosy niñas, hijos de residentes del municipio, nopueden pagar una cuota de socio y estocrea una situación injusta para ellos y perju-dicial para la comunidad pues no se creanmecanismos adecuados de fomento deldeporte, ni permite al Club contar con unacantera de jóvenes deportistas en las disci-plinas del mar. Para un pueblo costero ypara el propio club esta situación no es posi-tiva y se hace preciso solucionarla de algunamanera. Necesitamos crear la figura delsocio deportivo con cuotas asequibles.Estamos en ello”.¿Otras iniciativas?“Hemos puesto en marcha una encuestaentre los socios para valorar los serviciosque ofrecemos. Ha sido muy interesante. Seha producido una respuesta significativa,muy instructiva. Pronto lanzaremos unasegunda encuesta que será el prólogo de lapuesta en marcha de un plan de actuacio-nes que deberá someterse a aprobación”.En estos momentos dedica usted muchashoras diarias al Club ¿va a ser usted unpresidente ejecutivo?“No. Es verdad que dedico en esta fasemuchas horas al Club, al igual que muchosmiembros de la Junta Directiva. Lo seguire-mos haciendo hasta que se sienten lasbases de un nuevo modelo de Club. Nuestroobjetivo es someter ante los socios la apro-bación de este modelo que permitirá abor-dar el futuro con garantías y que pasará por

la profesionalización de las distintas áreascon la creación de un equipo de gestión. Noes responsabilidad de los directivos ocupar-se de la gestión, ni tampoco pueden cobrarpor ello. Nuestra responsabilidad es estable-cer planes estratégicos aprobados enAsamblea, marcar los objetivos a corto ymedio plazo y controlar escrupulosamentesu ejecución por parte de un equipo compe-tente de gestión. Esa y no otra debe sernuestra labor. Como he dicho antes, no haymilagros sólo mucho trabajo”.

August will mark the first anniversary of thenew Board of Directors, chaired by AlanPonte. From an internal point of view, it hasbeen a rather complicated year. The in-house crisis that triggered a vote of no confi-dence against the previous Board wasactually brought to an end in November2014 during a general meeting at which theresults of an internal audit were presented.At that meeting, the new Board formallyreceived the majority support of members,and approval was also given to settling theClub’s 2013 accounts, the 2014 budget andthe preliminary 2015 budget. The founda-tions for work to begin. In his greeting to members, published on theRCNPP website, Alan Ponte highlights thatthe ethos of the new Board is “to follow thespirit and the main goals that the Club hashad since its foundation: promoting watersports, especially sailing.Thus, our aim is for Reial Club Nàutic Portde Pollença to be a club that we can conti-nue to feel proud and part of. For us, thecare of our members and partners is para-mount, so we will promote what is theheart of the Club, the sports sections,collaboration with other water activitiesand to try to create a social area that allmembers can enjoy and relate to”.

Mr. Ponte, how would you sum up thesefirst eleven months of leadership? “It has been a very positive experience onmany fronts. Almost one year of being intouch with the reality of a Club which, in ouropinion, is at a historical moment of greatimportance. Not only because we are stillawaiting the outcome of the governmentconcession, but also because we have reali-sed that now is the time to launch a renewalprocess that allows us to approach the futu-re with confidence. Our job as the Board ofDirectors has to involve members in theapproval or not of a Club model that bringstogether all areas and lays down new mana-gement models. We should decide whattype of Club we want. It’s not down to me tosay that. It is down to the members at ameeting, having been provided with the rele-vant reports from the Board of Directors”. Would you like to propose a new manage-ment model? “My view as chairman is that the Club hasgrown extraordinarily in the last few deca-des, even though we must remember thatin the past 15 years financial results have

been saved by new members signing up.At twenty thousand per head, that adds upto 4.5 million euros. We’ve never made aprofit. The fact that we’re a non-profit spor-ting association doesn’t mean that weshouldn’t aspire to having profits or highprofitability to fund works or investmentinto the facilities and improve social, cultu-ral and sporting services”. Does that mean that investment is notbeing made now? “I don’t want to be misinterpreted becauseif one thing is clear, it’s that we have amarvellous team of people at the Club,from the offices to the sporting divisions,the restaurant or the berthside staff.However, we must acknowledge that eightor nine years ago, when the crisis startedand the Club was awaiting the concessionrenewal, the then chairman Porto discer-ningly and very effectively introduced anausterity plan to freeze spending. As aresult of this, today we’re still working withthis inertia, even though the real need is toinvest no less than 5 million euros into themodernisation, conservation, maintenance

and update of essential infrastructures.The electricity and water pedestals needmodifying, the bathrooms need totally refit-ting as they’re 25 years old, the areaaround the Harbourmaster’s Office needsredeveloping, a space for the SailingSchool needs to be created, more berthsare needed, and so on. Everything needsto be updated. If we don’t do that, we willend up outdated”. With the renewal of the government con-cession still in the air, can these inves-tments or projects be taken on? “After the regional elections in May, thesituation is what it is. I don’t have a magicwand to find out what will happen. Somepeople say absolutely nothing will be permit-ted, but others are more optimistic and thinkotherwise. We are the third largest creator ofemployment in Port de Pollença, after thecouncil and the hotels. The Club providesdirect employment, but also a lot of wealthand indirect employment. We have veryclose links with society and the Pollença eco-nomy. We form part of it. Therefore, for thiseconomy of scale to continue working inter-actively with society, the Club must boast avery strong competitive advantage. For this itis necessary to lay down an appropriate stra-tegic management plan that guarantees itssurvival within a suitable geographical,social, environmentally-sustainable and eco-nomically-viable framework”. However, in order of priority, the first thingmust be to secure the concession renewal,is that right? “Definitely so. The situation now is verycomplicated. PortsIB has to accept thecriteria set out in the ruling passed bythe judge about the appeal that the Clubfiled with regard to the form and contentof the terms and conditions establishedback at the time for the valuation of theClub and the subsequent establishmentof the fees. Our appeal was successfuland the ruling is positive. We hope thatthis ruling will make Ports review thesituation now and take advantage of theoccasion to renew the adaptation pro-cess that will recalculate the valuationand set new fees”. Are we entering a new phase? “Yes. We’ve got to wait. We’re ready and wewill act accordingly. There are no miracles.Only work”.

Besides the investment projects and theconcession renewal itself, which otherissues do you want to tackle? “We would really like to modify the RoyalDecree that lays out the criteria governingthe statutes of sporting associations. Inour opinion, these statutes imposed by theDirectorate General of Sport might be veryuseful for a village petanque club whereeverybody is a resident in Mallorca, butthey are not useful for a Club like ourswhere 60% of members are not residentsof the Balearics. Almost 20% of our mem-bers are Spanish nationals residing on themainland and 40% are foreigners. Thissituation really complicates our Club’selectoral processes and democratic deci-sion-making processes. It’s an absurdsituation that needs an in-depth review”. But can you not modify the statutes? “Not in the basic aspects that I just mentio-ned. What’s more, there are other issuesthat we would like to tackle, such as thequestion of sports-only members. The sta-tues do not allow for members just to take

part in sports. This is nonsense if we takeinto account that the very objective of ayacht club like ours is to foster water sports.It’s absurd because obviously the future ofany yacht club is linked to young people,both if they’re members’ children and localresidents. Many of these boys and girls, chil-dren of residents in the town, cannot pay amember’s fee and this creates an unfairsituation for them and detrimental for thecommunity, as appropriate tools to fostersport are not created and neither can theClub build up a pool of young athletes inwater sport disciplines. For a coastal townand for the Club itself, this situation is notpositive and it must be solved in some wayor another. We need to create the figure of asports-only member with affordable fees.We’re working on it”. Any other projects?“We launched a survey for members to eva-luate the services we offer. It was very inte-resting. We received many replies and learnta lot from it. Soon we will introduce a secondsurvey which will be the prologue to the

launch of an action plan pending approval”. At the moment you’re dedicating manyhours a day to the Club. Are you going tobe an executive chairman? “No. It’s true that at the moment I’m dedi-cating many hours a day to the Club, justlike other members of the Board ofDirectors. We will keep on doing so untilthe groundwork for a new Club model isfully laid. Our goal is to involve members inthe approval or not of this model that willallow us to approach the future with confi-dence and professionalise the differentareas by creating a management team. Itis not the directors’ responsibility to carryout management tasks, nor can they bepaid for this. Our responsibility is to esta-blish strategic plans approved at meetings,map out short- and medium-term goalsand scrupulously control their realisationthrough a competent management team.This should be our job, nothing else. As Isaid before, there are no miracles, just alot of work”.

Los días 23 y 24 de mayo se celebró la primera edi-ción del Pollensa Race & Boat Show, en aguas de labahía de Pollensa, con buenos resultados en cuantoa participación y espectadores. El evento fue organi-zado, en las instalaciones del Club, con la colabora-ción de importantes empresas y marcas participan-tes como Zar Formenti, Fairline, Jeanneau, Sea Ray,Náutica El Cano, Nauti Parts, Goldfish, Wave Runner-Yamaha, Garmin, Haven Marine Service, Mortitx, etc. Esta primera edición del Race& Boat Show hasido, en palabras del presidente del Club AlanPonte, “un interesante experimento que ha salidoextraordinariamente bien, tanto desde el punto devista del interés suscitado por el programa deactos, como por la colaboración de las empresas yla respuesta popular. Es una iniciativa que deberárepetirse en los próximos años”.El evento, programado secuencialmente en sábadoy domingo, llenó el Club y las aguas de la bahía deespectáculo y animación. Cientos de visitantes asis-

tieron a la exposición de barcos nuevos, de las náu-ticas representativas de Pollensa, con diversas com-peticiones que pudieron verse desde el espigón delpuerto, con un recorrido especialmente diseñadopara que todos los espectadores pudiesen sentir decerca la velocidad y el espectáculo de una carreraen vivo. Un par de cientos de personas contempla-ron desde el espigón del puerto las carreras demotos de agua y de neumáticas semirrígidas.Las carreras en el mar fueron, de hecho, uno delos importantes atractivos, pero también centraronla atención de los visitantes las demostracionesde flyboard, paddle surf, bautizos de mar paraoptimist, piraguas, diversos juguetes náuticos,karts eléctricos, espectáculo de circo y juegosmalabares. Durante la jornada se realizó asimis-mo la presentación del Open de Pesca. También copó la atenciónde los visitantes el llamado patí català, unaembarcación a vela tipo catamarán que se carac-teriza por no tener orza, ni timón, ni botavara.Mide 5,6 metros de eslora y 1,6 de manga. El tri-pulante lo conduce con su peso. Es una embarca-ción pensada para la playa, pero en Mallorca noabundan. El sábado pudieron verse tres navegan-do en aguas del Port de Pollença.La señorita Lindsay Donovan, responsable de ven-tas de Fairline North Mallorca, ha valorado muypositivamente esta primera edición destacando elagradecimiento hacia el Club y a las empresas ypersonas que han colaborado en la organizaciónde este evento que redundará en la mejora de la

Hundreds of visitors attend-ed the exhibition of new boats, held by the lead-ing yachting companies from Pollença, with sev-eral races that could be observed from thebreakwater of the port, with a course especiallydesigned for all spectators to experience thespeed and thrills of a live race at first hand. Allthose present on the breakwater marvelled atthe jet-ski and RIB races. In early June, the government launchedan eco-buoy service for regulated ancho-ring in areas listed as Regional Sites ofInterest (RSI) in order to combine thepreservation of Posidonia fields withrecreational boating. More specifically,the plan is to install 247 buoys for boatsup to 25 metres LOA in nine RegionalSites of Interest within the Balearics,which will be operative until 30September. A principios del mes de junio el Governpuso en marcha el servicio de boyas eco-lógicas para el fondeo regulado en laszonas catalogadas como Lugares deInterés Comunitario (LIC) con el objetivode conjugar la preservación de la posido-nia con la práctica de la navegaciónrecreativa. En concreto, prevé instalarhasta 247 boyas para el fondeo deembarcaciones de hasta 25 metros deeslora en nueve zonas LIC de Balearesque estarán operativas hasta el 30 deseptiembre.Las primeras zonas donde se colocaránlas boyas será en Ibiza y Formentera.Concretamente, en ses Salines de Ibiza, seinstalarán 33 boyas, a S'Espalmador deFormentera, 51 boyas, y en la zona delCaló de s'Oli, 26 boyas.A estas zonas se añadirán Cala Blava(34 boyas) y Sant Elm (23 boyas) enMallorca, y Fornells (50 boyas) y la Islade Colom (30 boyas) en Menorca.Cabe destacar que se mantiene elmismo precio de 2014 para usar estasboyas ecológicas, que oscila entre los 15euros por día y los 40 euros por díasegún el tamaño de la eslora de laembarcación.Las boyas se podrán reservar en línea,como el año pasado, por medio de laweb http://www.balearslifeposidonia.eu.

El verano pasado este ser-vicio recogió 46.913 kilos de residuos.Desde que se puso en marcha, en 2004,se han retirado de las aguas del litoralde las Islas Baleares un total de 1.889toneladas de residuos.

She is famous for being part of theDutch trading fleet at the start of the lastcentury, although the ship was alsoemployed as a military dispatch boat andas a privateer for the Dutch Crown.Later she was used as an offshore fis-hing vessel in Newfoundland and Icelandand again for freight.Now dedicated to charters, she has alre-ady completed two circumnavigationsand can accommodate twenty-fourguests with a crew of seven.

In May, the Balearic government laun-ched a service to clean bathing watersalong the coastline of the four islands.Thirty-three boats will take part in thefive-month operation, which will run from1 May to 30 September with a budget of1.1 million euros. The Minister of Agriculture, Environmentand Territory, Biel Company, presented inPuerto de Andratx the bathing water cle-aning service and anti-pollution schemefor Balearic beaches and bays run byABAQUA, the Balearic Agency of Waterand Environmental Quality. Esto va así”.¿Estás haciendo algún tipo de preparaciónespecífica para el Campeonato del Mundo?“Sí. De hecho la preparación empezóhace tres años. En octubre de 2012 ini-ciamos mi preparación para este mun-dial. Desde entonces, muchísimas horasde entreno, muchas competiciones,miles de kilómetros remando... creo queya va siendo el momento de volcar todoese entrenamiento y toda esa prepara-ción en la competición”.¿Si te clasificas en Milán serán las deBrasil tus últimas olimpíadas?“Hombre, no. Yo creo que no. Si me cla-sifico, éstas serán las segundas y, sitodo va bien, intentaré ir a por unas ter-ceras. Y hasta que el cuerpo diga basta.Mi objetivo es seguir haciendo estohasta que el cuerpo aguante o la situa-ción ya no lo permita”.¿Tu compañero David Cal se ha retiradodefinitivamente?“Sí. Este año. Es lo que te comento. Elcuerpo le ha dicho basta y ha entendidoque lo mejor era parar”.¿Qué edad tiene?“Tiene 32 años y yo sólo 24. Cuando hago lo que séhacer, que es remar, no estoy preocupado.Si cada día estoy encima de la canoa nadava a cambiar porque esté en una competi-ción o aquí en Mallorca entrenando”.¿No pesa tener más estímulos y mayorresponsabilidad?“Sencillamente no pienso en ello. Piensoen superarme ese día, en esa competi-ción y en hacerlo mejor que el día ante-rior. No hay que pensar en la responsabi-lidad. Tampoco en si eres un tal o elmejor o en lo que la gente pueda pensaro te puede llegar a decir. Ni siquiera enque representas a España. No. Tienesque pensar en ti mismo, en superarte yen darlo todo. Yo creo que cuando lo dastodo ya te puedes dar por satisfecho”.

¿Cómo está el calendario de competi-ciones en 2016 hasta las olimpíadas?“Lo más importante es el Mundial. Es elobjetivo del año. Después habrá un calen-dario normal de competiciones hasta Brasilincluida una repesca para la olimpíada.Pero bueno, ahora mismo no pasa por micabeza pensar más allá del Mundial”.¿Quién corre con los gastos que generatodo este ritmo de competición?“Ahora mismo, gracias a que estoy conlos mejores del mundo, los gastos correna cargo de la Federación Española”.¿Y los entrenamientos?

“Eso me lo costeo yo. Vivo en mi casa,pago el alquiler y corro con mis gastoscorrientes como cualquiera. Aquí nadiesuelta nada. Pero en este sentido quierodar las gracias a que tengo el Club Náuticoque me ha ayudado mucho a llegar adonde he llegado porque en los iniciosnunca nadie cree en ti y el único que creyóen mis posibilidades fue el Club. En sumomento apostó fuerte por mí y ha llega-do el momento de devolver, poco a poco,con resultados, que es lo único que sepuede devolver, parte de ese apoyo quefue tan importante para mí”.

Supongo que sabes que te has conver-tido en el referente del piragüismo enBaleares, como Rafael Nadal lo es enel tenis... ¿eres consciente de ello?“Puede ser que sí, pero son cosas queno me he planteado nunca”.Dicen los expertos que es casi un mila-gro que de un Club relativamentepequeño surja un deportista de élitemundial, ¿qué crees?“La verdad es que tienen que convergerbastantes circunstancias. Está claro quepara los Clubes náuticos es relativamen-te fácil y económicamente posible parti-cipar en los campeonatos de España.Competir después en las pruebas inter-nacionales es más difícil. Pero no por elcoste, porque es la Federación quiencorre con los gastos. El problema es queahí afuera, en la competición internacio-nal, hay mucho nivel y es muy difícil cla-

sificarse. Requiere mucha disciplina,mucha preparación y mucho esfuerzo”.¿Consideras que la compañía o lainfluencia de Kiko, tu entrenador, hasido fundamental?“La verdad es que sí. Yo empecé en pira-güismo en el Club hace once años y yaentonces conocí a Kiko. Después me fuial Centro de Tecnificación, posteriormen-te estuve en el equipo nacional junior enAsturias y después en Galicia en el equi-po nacional absoluto. Durante aquellosaños fui teniendo unos cuantos entrena-dores, pero después volví aquí y ya mequedé con Kiko como entrenador. Yocreo que hacemos un buen tándem quepor el momento funciona. Espero quedure muchos años”.Y al margen del piragüismo, ¿qué haces?“Estoy estudiando INEF en la UniversidadCatólica de Murcia. Me dieron una beca

para seguir estos estudios que me per-mitirán conseguir un futuro profesionalrelacionado con el deporte”.Esto del piragüismo no da pasta comootros deportes de élite ¿o sí?“Los cinco primeros del mundo sí que pue-den vivir bien. Tanto por las becas, comopor los patrocinios que se puedan conse-guir, a pesar de que la crisis se ha vueltoen una excusa empresarial para no patro-cinar a los deportistas. Pero, en fin, yo porahora puedo vivir. Creo que el día que nopueda vivir, tendré que ponerme a trabajaren otra cosa, como todo el mundo”.¿Qué consejos puedes dar a los chava-les que empiezan, a los que entrenantres o cuatro días por semana, eninvierno y en verano, en días duros defrio o calor?“Yo cuando empecé venía a entrenar dosveces a la semana y me lo pasaba pipa.Nunca me obsesioné en ganar. Nunca hemirado más allá de pasármelo bien.Siempre he llegado al Club con ganas parapasármelo bien con los amigos. Con ellosnos íbamos con las piraguas a la playa,para arriba, para abajo. Nos tirábamosagua, jugábamos y disfrutábamos en elagua, nos lo pasábamos pipa. Yo creo quelo fundamental de hacer cualquier deportees pasártelo bien y trabajar. Tienes quetrabajar pero pasándotelo bien y despuésya vendrán, si vienen, los resultados...todo llega. Y si no llegan pues no pasanada. Peor habría sido no intentarlo. Nohace falta ser campeón del mundo, nicampeón olímpico para disfrutar remandoy más en la bahía de Pollensa que es lamejor del mundo”.

Then the most eagerly-awaited date inthe calendar: the Canoe Sprint WorldChampionships, which are being held inMilan between 19 and 23 August. Ahugely important championship this yearas the top-ranked athletes will automati-cally get their ‘passport’ to the 2016Brazil Olympics. With such good results so far this year,do you feel optimistic about the WorldChampionships in Milan?“It’s true that the results so far havebeen good, but I don’t think that’s aguarantee to rest on your laurels. Fromnow to Milan there are many things leftto improve. We’ve got to improve quite afew things that are still up there in theair. If we pull this off in the next coupleof months, then I believe that in Milan I’llbe better than I am now. By keepingmyself in the world top seven, I’ll haveachieved the goal of competing next yearat the Brazil games”. Do you want to make up for the disap-pointment of London?“First I have to qualify in order to com-pete at the Olympics. Then I’ll thinkabout making up for the disappointment.Now I’m just thinking about each day asit comes, and that means the event inAzerbaijan and then the preparations forthe World Championships in Italy. I can’tthink about the Olympics when I stillhaven’t qualified for them.That’s how it is”. Are you making any specific prepara-tions for the World Championships?“Yes, I am. In fact, preparations startedthree years ago. In October 2012, westarted my preparations for this event.Since then, lots and lots of hours train-ing, many competitions, thousands ofkilometres rowing… I think it’s now time

to put all that training and preparationinto practice”. If you qualify in Milan, will Brazil beyour last Olympics?“No, I don’t think so. If I qualify, thesewill be my second Olympics, and if every-thing goes swimmingly, I’ll try to make itto my third Games. Until my body says nomore. My goal is to keep doing thisuntil my body gives out or mysituation changes”. Has your teammate David Cal fullyretired now?“Yes, this year. It’s what I was saying. Hisbody had had enough and he realised itwas best to stop”. How old is he?“He’s 32 and I’m only 24. So I hope I’vegot at least eight years and two moreOlympics ahead of me”. In world-level competitions like this,can nerves get the best of you?“Thankfully, I don’t get nervous when I’m

on the water, but I do when I’m on dryland. When I’m doing what I know, inother words rowing, I’m not worried.Seeing as every day I’m in a canoe, noth-ing’s going to change just because I’mcompeting or I’m training herein Mallorca”. Is it not hard having more challengesand greater responsibility?“I just don’t think about that. I thinkabout surpassing myself on the day, inwhichever competition, and always doingbetter than the day before. You shouldn’thave to worry about responsibility.Neither if you’re better or worse thansomeone else, or what people mightthink about you, or what they might endup saying to you. Not even that you’rerepresenting Spain. You’ve got to thinkabout number one, about outdoing your-self and giving your all. I reckon thatwhen you give your all, you can be happywith yourself”.

But not because of thecost, because the Federation covers that.The problem is that out there, in interna-tional competition, there’s a very highlevel and it’s really difficult to qualify. “Definitely so. I started canoeing at theClub eleven years ago and that’s when Imet Kiko. Canoeing isn’t as lucrative as otherelite sports, is it?“The top five in the world can live well,thanks to both the grants and the spon-sorship money they receive, even thoughthe crisis has become an excuse forcompanies not to sponsor athletes. Fornow, though, I can survive. The day Ican’t, I’ll have to start working in anotherarea, just like anybody else”. What advice would you give to kids whoare starting out, those who train threeor four days a week, in winter and insummer, come rain or shine?“When I started out, I’d train twice aweek and I used to love it. I was neverobsessed with winning. All I ever thoughtabout was having a great time. I alwaysarrived at the Club wanting to have funwith my friends. We’d head off to thebeach with our canoes, row up and downon the water, throw water at each other,mess around in the sea – it was a greattime! I think that the basic thing of anysport is to enjoy yourself and work hard.You have to work hard but also enjoyyourself at the same time.Then the results will come… youhave to be patient. And if they don’tcome, no problem. It would have beenworse not to try. You don’t have to be aworld champion or Olympic champion tohave fun canoeing, and even more so inthe Bay of Pollença, which is the best inthe world”.

Los periodistas de deportes del diario Última Hora,realizaron en diciembre de 2014 una encuestaentre personas de Baleares relacionadas con eldeporte. En la encuesta se les preguntó por su per-sonaje deportivo del año. Entre los nominados comomejores entrenadores de Baleares figuró KikoMartín deportista de nuestro club y que lleva diezaños entrenando a Sete Benavides. El resultado dedicha encuesta se dió a conocer el 29 de diciembrequedando Kiko elegido en el segundo lugar, pordetrás de Toni Nadal, entrenador de tenis de susobrino Rafa. Casi un mes después, a finales de enero de 2015,se celebró en Asturias la gala nacional de piragüis-mo. En dicha gala la Federación Española dePiragüismo reconoció como mejor deportista seniordel año a Sete Benavides y como mejor entrenadorde 2014 a Kiko Martín.Kiko, llegan las recompensas a tantos años de tra-bajo ¿cómo lo estás viviendo?

“Hombre ya te puedes imaginar. Ha sido un auténticohonor recibir todos estos reconocimientos. En mi casoconcreto me siento súper orgulloso y muy satisfechopor Sete, por quienes han creído en él, por el propioClub, por su familia y en fin, quedar como segundomejor entrenador de Baleares, por detrás de una per-sona de tanto prestigio como Toni Nadal, pues quequieres que te diga. En el Mundial no esta-rán los 7 sino los 18 mejores del mundo, dondesolamente se clasifican 7 y donde un cruce en semi-final te puede dejar fuera. Será relativamente fácilpasar las series, pero las cuatro semifinales van aser a muerte. Muy difícil y además de estar prepara-do, tienes que tener el factor suerte a tu favor, ungiro o un ligero subidón de viento te puede perjudi-car enormemente”.Dice Sete que tiene intención de disputar dos jue-gos olímpicos más, ¿qué crees?“Hombre … sí … pero siempre que siga en su línea,

si se cuida como hasta ahora tiene para llegar hastaTokio en buenas condiciones”.¿No es como un milagro que un deportista tan jovende un club relativamente pequeño llegue tan alto?“Nuestro Club es relativamente pequeño en tamañosi lo comparas con otros clubes del mundo, peropara nosotros es un Club grande, muy grande, quenos ha proporcionado todo lo que necesitábamospara llegar donde estamos. Y con respecto a Sete¿qué puedo decir? Un gran deportista que compiteen una disciplina muy difícil reservada a los “gigan-tes” de los países del Este. No podemos meter más. Para nuestras con-diciones es un número tope. Ten en cuenta quemuchos días tenemos que desplazarnos a LagoEsperanza para entrenar en aguas tranquilas y que,cuando llegan los grandes campeonatos internaciona-les o nacionales, uno de los dos monitores debe des-plazarse también con los palistas. Contar con máspalistas complicaría mucho la situación. En canoasomos el equipo más potente de España y en otras dis-ciplinas conseguimos resultados muy buenos. A pesarde ello y de todas las dificultades ahora nos estamosabriendo a los más pequeños para que dentro de unosaños se pueda producir un relevo en condiciones”.

Almost a month later, at the end of January2015, the national canoe gala was held in Asturias,where the Spanish Canoeing Federation named SeteBenavides senior sportsman of the year and KikoMartin coach of the year 2014. Kiko, you’re reaping the rewards after so manyyears of hard work. How are you feeling? “Well, you can imagine. It’s been a true honour toreceive all these honours. In my particular case,I’m really proud of Sete and extremely happy forhim, for everyone who believed in him, for the Clubitself and for his family. And being named secondbest coach in the Balearics, behind such a widely-revered person as Toni Nadal, well, I just don’tknow what to say. An honour and a privilege”. A very important year also because of the goldat the World Championships and with qualifica-tion for the Rio Olympics on the cards. “It is but it’s not going to be a walk in the park. Thisis the qualifying year for the Games and the year inwhich everyone is going to be going flat out. In quali-fying years, athletes are working harder than at theactual Olympics. They’re aware that the level is very,very high and if they’re not strong, they’ll get leftbehind. Three years of hard work for nothing. Thequalifying World Championships will be in August inMilan and they’ll be pinnacle of the competition. It’llbe the turning point where everyone will be goingflat out, a lot more than they will be next year”. With better times than at the Olympics? “Yes, almost definitely. The top seven in the worldwill qualify. Securing a place in an Olympic final ismuch easier than securing a place in the Milanfinal this August. The top eighteen in the world willbe there, and only seven will qualify. A slight mis-take in the semis could leave you out of the run-ning. It’ll be relatively easy to get through theheats, but the four semi-finals are going to betough. Very difficult and besides being on form,you need to have the luck factor on your side, as atwist of an oar or a slight increase in the wind canaffect you enormously”. Sete says he plans to compete in two moreOlympics, what do you think?“Yes, of course, but as long as continues as he isnow. If he looks after himself as he has done up tonow, he’ll easily get to Tokyo 2020 in good form”. Isn’t it nigh on a miracle that such a young athletefrom a relatively small Club has gone so far? “Our Club is relatively small size-wise if you compareit to other clubs around the world, but for us it is big,really big, and has given us everything we’ve neededto get where we are today. European countries. The only guy who’s made aforay into this discipline is him”. For kids starting out, Sete’s success must be ahuge motivation for them. “Definitely so. The figure of Sete is very importantfor the young canoeists. It’s the same effect thatDavid Cal’s victories had. I remember that oneday, quite a few years ago now, Sete was in akayak during the summer courses and he sawDavid win his first ever Olympic medal. He turnedto me and said “I want to be like him”. And now heis. He went straight from kayaks to sprint canoes.His reference has always been David Cal, thesame way that Rafa Nadal is for young tennis play-ers and Sete himself now is for anyone who rowsat a club in the Balearics”. What’s the Club’s pool of young canoeists like atthe moment? “Really good, actually. Rogelio has qualified for theEuropean Championships and the U23 WorldChampionships. He’s a C2 with future vision. Heshares a boat with a canoeist from Murcia andthey’ve got a really good chance of bringing homea world title one day”. How many boys and girls does the Club canoeingdivision have and what ages are they?

“33 in total. We can’t fit any more in. For our condi-tions, this is the maximum we can allow. Bear inmind that on many days we have to go off to LagoEsperanza to train on calm waters, and when themajor national or international competitions takeplace, one of the three coaches has to accompanythe canoeists. Having more canoeists would reallycomplicate the situation. In canoe sprint we are with-out doubt the strongest team in Spain and in otherdisciplines we are getting good results. We havethree seniors who have qualified for the Worlds andthe Europeans, juniors who are through to theDragon Boat, the under-16s are in fifth position, andin the under-14s three of the girls are Spanish run-ners-up, and the boys always finish in the top five orsix. We’ve got a good level. Despite this and all thedifficulties, we’re now welcoming in younger kids whowill be able to take over from them in a few years”. Are you going to carry on like this? “The truth is that it’s a little tiring at times. Somemonths I spend entirely away from home, but alsoit’s true that it’s very gratifying when you see theresults and the guys doing well. It’s the perfectmotivation to carry on”.

El “Sayula”, un First 36.7 de Fernando Echegaray,fue el vencedor absoluto de la décimo octava edi-ción de la Bahía de Pollença – Trofeo AlfonsoEchegaray, que se disputó el primer fin de semanadel mes de junio entre CM Port Ginesta y el Portde Pollença. La Regata de Altura tomó la salida alas 18.30 horas del viernes, desde el CM PortGinesta con rumbo a Port Pollença, con un viento

de componente SE de entre 8 – 10 nudos. El vien-to cayó al cabo de unas horas, estableciéndose denuevo el E – SE. En la prueba participaron un total de 18 embarca-ciones pero solo tres de ellas pudieron cruzar lalínea de meta dentro del tiempo previsto: el “Sayula”de Fernando Echegaray del RCN de Barcelona, el“Galvana”, un Sparkmann & Stephens 56’ de Borja

El sábado, tal y como estaba previsto, se celebróen el Club el acto oficial de Entrega de Trofeosque estuvo presidido por Tomeu Cifré, alcalde dePollença; Maria Boades, concejal de Turisme del’Ajuntament de Pollença; Alan Ponte, presidentedel RCNPP; Pere Antoni Nadal, delegado de Veladel RCNPP, Isabel Subirats, presidenta de ANAM;y la familia Echegaray Figueras.La Bahía de Pollença es una regata de media dis-tancia, en la que hay que atravesar el canal deMallorca arrumbando a Cabo Formentor y que seha convertido en referencia para los navegantesdel litoral mediterráneo. La regata, organizada por ANAM y la familiaEchegaray Figueras, cuenta con la colaboraciónde la RANC, la FCV, el CM Port Ginesta, Reial ClubNàutic Port Pollença y con el apoyo delAjuntament de Pollença.

del día 14 de junio y, con ella, la Liguilla dePrimavera. Un tiempo inestable acompañó a losparticipantes de la prueba, consistente en dosvueltas a un triángulo formado por Llenaire,Manresa y Formentor, con un total de 14 millasnáuticas. El vencedor en tiempo absoluto de laprueba fue Peer con su Hobie Cat Fx One demos-trando porque los catamaranes son los favoritosde las regatas extremas ya que sacó una hora alsegundo barco.

LIGA DE INVIERNO: METEO ADVERSALa meteorología ha jugado malas pasadas a laLiga de invierno de cruceros. Varias de las prue-bas tuvieron que cancelarse por la adversa meteo,por lo que el ganador de la regata se coronabaautomáticamente ganador de la liga.Dos veleros del club, los tres “Jantar 26” deSail´n´Surf y un Hobbie Cat se reunieron paratomar la salida con un suave viento. El recorridofue un clásico del verano en la Bahía de Pollença:del puerto a Formentor y regreso, aunque en estecaso se dieron dos vueltas.Nada más salir se vio que el catamarán iba a

Aun así lasegunda regata de la Liga supuso el estreno dedos nuevos veleros en la flota, nada menos quedos magníficos Swan 411 se vieron las caras en lalínea de salida.El recorrido arrancó frente a la escollera del clubpara tomar en seguida una baliza de desmarque ydirigirse hacia Cap Pinar, desde donde la flota debíaenfilar la siguiente baliza frente a la playa deFormentor para completar el recorrido llegando alclub y rebasar la línea de llegada frente al travel lift.El viento de Poniente y Mistral con fuerza 3-4 fuebajando hasta dejar empantanados a los velerosen las cercanías de Cap Pinar.

The offshore regatta cast offat 6.30pm on the Friday from CM Port Ginesta oncourse to Port de Pollença, with a SE windbetween 8 and 10 knots, which then droppedafter a few hours and turned into an ESE. WINTER LEAGUE: ADVERSEWEATHER CONDITIONSThe weather played dirty tricks on the WinterCruiser League. Several heats had to be cancelledbecause of adverse weather, so the winner of thefinal regatta was automatically crowned winner ofthe League. Two sailboats from the Club, the three Jantar 26s fromSail’n’Surf and a Hobie Cat lined up to set off in a gen-tle breeze. The course was a summer classic in theBay of Pollença: from the port to Formentor and back,although in this case the route was repeated twice.From the start, it was clear that the catamaran wasgoing to do one regatta and the monohulls another.The wind picked up and turned into a Gregale, compli-cating the regatta for the fleet. The Hobie Cat Pacificcompleted the course in less than an hour and a halfand before the other boats had even reached theFormentor marker for the second time.The monohull race was entertaining in the end. Thefleet was sailing as a pack when at the final marker,the leader hoisted the spinnaker and lost control –

SECOND WINTER TRIALFew boats lined up for the second trial of theWinter League. The cold of February wreakedhavoc in the fleet, with many skippers and crewspreferring to stay at home in the hope of betterweather. Even so, the second race saw the debutof two new boats in the fleet, no less than a pairof magnificent Swan 411s that came bow-to-bowat the starting line. The route started just off the Club breakwater andimmediately rounded a marker to head towardsCap Pinar, from where the fleet had to sail in a linearound the next marker off Formentor beach tothen return towards the Club and cross the finish-ing line opposite the travel lift. The idea was to shorten the race by heading backdirectly to the finishing line, but the committeehad to call off the trial. During the return leg, withthe official race now cancelled, there was a seriesof hikes from the newcomers in the fleet whichhighlighted the competitive spirit of the sailboatsand their skippers.

Un suave viento del 070que comenzó con tan sólo 5 nudos parallegar a 10 posibilitó realizar cuatro man-gas barlovento/sotavento entre PuntaAvanzada y Manresa.Teo Matheu y su tripulante se impusieroncon autoridad, tres victorias en cuatropruebas. Michael Clough ganó la primerade las pruebas demostrando una vezmás que quien tuvo retuvo, pero TeoMatheu, una vez afinado el barco, no diochance a ningún competidor y ganó lastres mangas siguientes. The first, whichstarted from outside the Club, roundedthe island of Formentor and tested thecrews’ skills when passing through thestraight between the island and thecoastline. The second leg started straightaway and ended off the Mal Pas beach.Then there was a break and a visit to theCocodrilo restaurant to recharge batte-ries. The third leg was special, with theboats shooting off from the pier at the

restaurant and then arriving practicallybow-to-bow at the Club. David Miles andhis crew got better and better on eachleg, notching up a third, a second, andthen a first to win the trophy. Secondplace went to the crew formed by Walkerand Harvey and, completing the podiumin third place, were Babbage and Walker.

En el grupo de Optimist D, la flota de optimist ini-ciación, Martí Ribas se aupó al cuarto puesto yMªAngel Axartell al décimo después de cinco prue-bas. Joana Aina Cabanellas conquistó el segundopuesto a sólo tres puntos del primer clasificado ypor delante de la local Neus Ballester. El TrofeoRepsol era la segunda regata del campeonato deMallorca de Optimist, de modo que sumando losresultados de esta prueba y la organizada porCala Gamba Juana Aina quedó en el quinto puestode la categoría plata. Su hermana Caterina seencuentra en el top 20 de este ranking.

EL CAMPEONATO DE BALEARES POR EQUIPOSDE OPTIMIST FUE ORGANIZADO POR EL CLUBDurante el fin de semana del 25 y 26 de abril sedisputó, bajo la organización del Club, elCampeonato de Baleares por equipos de clubes.Dicha competición es importante en el calendarioBalear pues con ella se elige al representante denuestra comunidad en el Campeonato de Españapor equipos de clubes.El sábado se realizaba una fase eliminatoria,separando los 8 clubes clasificados en dos gruposy enfrentándose entre ellos con un sistema de

round robin. Tras esa eliminatoria no hubo sorpre-sas y los cuatro clubes favoritos conseguían elpase a la ronda semifinal, de esta manera los clu-bes de C.N.La Rápita, C.N.Arenal, C.V.P.Andratx yR.C.N.Palma se situaban en esa ronda realizandoun nuevo round robin entre ellos en dos vueltas,es decir debían enfrentarse a cada uno de ellosen dos ocasiones. El sábado tenía lugar esta pri-mera vuelta y el C.N.La Rápita se situaba provisio-nalmente al frente aunque empatado a puntoscon el C.N.Arenal, ambos con dos puntos de lostres posibles.La jornada del domingo comenzaba con los 4 clu-bes con posibilidades de victoria final pero tampo-co en esta ocasión hubo sorpresas y después dela segunda vuelta el C.N.La Rápita pasaba comoprimero por delante del C.N.Arenal y por tantoambos lucharían en la final definitiva. Los sesenta mejores opti-mistas disputaron seis pruebas repartidas en dosdías muy diferentes.Aina Colom del CNA demostró por qué es la cam-peona del mundo y ganó todas las pruebas inde-pendientemente de las condiciones meteorológi-cas. Melsión Rosselló de Sa Ràpita fue el segundoclasificado con tres segundos y dos terceros, ade-más del descarte. Francisco Comas, también deSa Ràpita cerró el podium. TROFEO STIUEl Trofeo Stiu Optmist reunió a cuarenta jóvenesque disputaron un total de seis pruebas consisten-tes en recorrer un cuadrado -la regata típica de losque comienzan a competir- que se realizaronsiempre con salidas válidas y rapidez con lo quetodas las pruebas fueron muy ágiles e hicieroncómodo el trabajo de los oficiales de regata.El trofeo tuvo un prólogo con la charla que PauBalaguer del SOCIB dio a los chicos explicando las

labores que realiza el observatorio, los mediosque cuentan y los resultados obtenidos.Unas reproducciones de unos Optimist coronarona los ganadores del Trofeo Stiu. TROFEO COLONYALos pasados 25 y 26 de Octubre el Club organizóel Trofeo Colonya, clásica regata de Optimist en labahía que ha llegado a su trigésima tercera edi-ción, reuniendo a 105 regatistas de casi todos losclubes de la isla.Poco viento el sábado, los barcos fueron al aguadespués de un aplazamiento de una hora y elcampo de regatas se montó frente a PuntaAvanzada para un viento del 060 y poca intensidad.Pudieron realizar dos pruebas para toda la flota gra-cias a la pericia del comité moviendo el campocuando fue necesario y a que no hubo salidas nulas,por lo que no se tuvo que repetir ningún procedi-miento de salida. In the Optimist D group, the beginners’ fleet,Martí Ribas came in fourth place and Mª AngelAxartell in tenth place after five trials.Meanwhile, Joana Aina Cabanellas securedsecond place, just three points behind the lea-der and ahead of local girl Neus Ballester. TheTrofeo Repsol was the second race in theMallorca Optimist Championships, so by addingthe results of this trial to the one staged by CalaGamba, Juana Aina ended up in fifth place inthe Silver Category. Her sister Caterina is in thetop 20 of this ranking, too.

CLUB STAGES BALEARIC OPTIMISTTEAM CHAMPIONSHIPSOver the weekend of 25 and 26 April, the Clubstaged the Balearic Team Championships. Thiscompetition plays an important role in theBalearic calendar, as it is where the representa-tive of our region is chosen to compete in theSpanish Club Championships. An eliminatoryround was held on the Saturday, diving the 8participating clubs into two groups which thenwent head-to-head with each other in a roundrobin system. There were no surprises and thefour favourites all qualified for the semi-final,which saw C.N. La Rápita, C.N. Arenal, C.V.P.Andratx and R.C.N. Palma taking part in anotherround robin over two legs, meaning that eachteam had to face each other twice. The first racewas held on the Saturday, with C.N. La Rápitataking provisional leadership although drawingon points with C.N. Arenal, both with two out ofthree possible points. The Sunday began with all four clubs theoreti-cally in with a chance of victory, but after thesecond race C.N. La Rápita and C.N. Arenal heldonto their positions and went through to thefinal. Three races were held in the final, andalthough they were closely fought, C.N. Arenalultimately took command and was crownedBalearic champion, with the runner-up beingC.N. La Rápita. Meanwhile, in the battle for thirdplace, C.V.P. Andratx beat R.C.N. Palma 2-0 andtook up the last place on the podium.

that decides which sailors will take part in theSpanish Championships. The sixty best Optimistsailors raced in six trials held over two days. TheSaturday saw a textbook embat, with constantwinds in both direction and intensity, giving riseto three fast trials with valid starts. The Sundaydawned with some very threatening clouds overthe mountains and the wind took while to pickup, blowing very irregularly from 330, whichmeant that one trial was postponed and twostarts were declared void. Aina Colom from CNA proved why she’s worldchampion and won all the trials regardless ofthe weather conditions. Melsión Rosselló fromSa Ràpita was runner-up, with three secondsand two thirds, as well as the void. FranciscoComas, also from Sa Ràpita rounded off thepodium. The top U13 was Arturo Madero fromRCNP. The trophy-giving ceremony was held atthe Club pool, hosted by the sports secretary ofthe Town Council, the chairman of the BalearicSailing Federation, and Pere Antoni Nadal,sports representative at the Club.

TROFEO STIUThe Trofeo Stiu Optimist welcomed forty youngsailors who raced a total of six trials around asquare course – the typical regatta of thosebeginning to compete. All trials were fast anddeclared valid, making easy work for the raceofficials. The race followed a talk by PauBalaguer from the SOCIB, who explained thework carried out by this coastal observatory, theresources they have and results obtained. The winners of the Trofeo Stiu were crownedwith reproductions of Optimists. In the U11 cate-

gory, third place went to Xavier Caldentey fromCa’n Pastilla, second to Leopoldo Pérez Fontánfrom Molinar and first to Joan Tomás from Ca’nPastilla. TROFEO COLONYAOn 25 and 26 October, the Club held the TrofeoColonya, the thirty-third edition of a classicOptimist regatta in the Bay which attracted 105sailors from nearly all clubs on the island. Witha gentle breeze on the Saturday, the boats tookto the water after a one-hour postponement andthe race field was set up off Punta Avanzada fora wind from 060. Two trials were held for theentire fleet, thanks to the committee’s quickthinking on moving the field when required,which also meant no void starts or any restarts.Juan Manuel Calafell, from Club de Vela Portd’Andratx, took the overall lead and his club-mate Olga Beltrán did the same in the OptimistD group. The forecast was even worse for theSunday, but the change in the clocks and aneasterly wind that strengthened the embatmeant that everything went to plan, with threetrials for the older children and two for theOptimist D boys and girls. Once on dry land, the Club chairman and themanager of the local branch of Colonya, CaixaPollença – the bank sponsoring the event – han-ded out the awards on the Club terrace.

Un año más se está preparando la cele-bración del XXII Open de Baleares dePesca de Altura en la modalidad deCurricán, una competición, importanteen el calendario de pesca de Baleares,organizada por el Club. El XXII Open es puntuable para elChallenge Pesca a bordo Currican2015 calificable para el Offshore WorldChampionship 2016.El evento, que se celebrará los días 4 y 5de julio, sigue basándose en la puntuaciónen la modalidad de captura y suelta, contutores de la organización a bordo pero seaceptará embarcar y dar le la finalidadque se estime oportuna a una captura dealbacora por tripulante y jornada, la cualpuntuará igualmente por medida. La parti-cipación es gratuita, lo cual supone unesfuerzo del Club para mantener en activoun evento de una modalidad costosa queha visto mermada su práctica por las dis-tintas limitaciones.La edición de este año cuenta con lacolaboración de la Asociación de Pesca

Preparations are underway for the 22ndBalearic Offshore Fishing Open forTrolling, an important competition in theBalearic fishing calendar and organisedby the Club. The 22nd Open counts towards the 2015Onboard Trolling Challenge, which itselfis a qualifier for the 2016 OffshoreWorld Championship.The event, held between 4 and 5 July,

uses the catch-and-release scoring sys-tem with onboard officials, but they canalso board to inspect the capture of onealbacore per crew per day, taking size inconsideration. Participation is free-of-charge, which entails a struggle for theClub to keep a costly event going thathas seen numbers fall recently becauseof different limitations. This year’s edition is in collaboration withthe Responsible Fishing Association,Quely, Aguapp, Arluy, la Náutica, andTuna Finder.

TUNA FINDER BACK IN SERVICEMany fishermen are aware of the influ-ence of certain aspects on the behaviourof tuna. Lunar phases, sea temperatureand time of the year are all factors thatrecreational fishermen often link to thepresence of tuna in fishing areas. Whereto fish? A day’s fishing starts for many

2014 DOLPHINFISH OUTINGLast year’s annual fishing event in thesearch for dolphinfish was moved to themonth of October and proved to be agreat success. Before setting off, theskippers and crews had a breakfastbriefing at 7.30am at the Club chiringui-to. To add a bit of excitement to the day,it was announced that there would be aprize for the boat catching the largestfish, but counting only dolphinfish.The sea was slightly choppy given thelight southwesterly wind. This graduallydied down until total calm with a watertemperature of 24-25ºC.A magnificent day to go out fishing andenjoy the Mediterranean. The skippers reconvened at the chiringui-to at 2.00pm to weigh the fish caught,with the winning boat being StormAngel. The chairman of RCNPP, AlanPonte, awarded the prize, kindly donatedby the store Sa Nàutica, to Josep Alba.The participants then enjoyed a magnifi-cent BBQ.

Port de Pollença acogió entre el 30 de abril y el 3de mayo el III Encuentro Internacional deHidroaviones, el Splash-In 2015. Un evento organi-zado por la Federación Aeronáutica Mallorca(FAM) que conmemora los 100 años de la hidroa-viación española desde su primera edición enPorto Colom. Una veintena de aparatos, avionetas, helicópteros,ultraligeros y otros participaron en el evento. La edi-ción de este año contó con la colaboración delEjército del Aire y del Ayuntamiento de Pollença.Alrededor de 10.000 personas presenciaron laespectacular exhibición aérea. La cita aeronáuticadio comienzo con una muestra estática en la baseaérea por parte de una docena de hidroaviones pro-cedentes de nueve países, junto a dos Canadairapagafuegos del 43 Grupo de Fuerzas Aéreas.La demostración dio comienzo con un amerizajeen la bahía por parte de los hidroaviones que acontinuación lanzaron la carga de agua tras un

espectacular descenso. El ejercicio continuó con la participación de unhelicóptero del 801 Escuadrón del Ala 49, querealizó un simulacro de rescate en el agua de unnáufrago y de un herido en una lancha.Por su parte, la Patrulla Acrobática Paracaidistadel Ejército del Aire efectuó dos lanzamientosdesde 2.500 metros de alturas. Port de Pollença was host to the 3rd InternationalSeaplane Splash-In between 30 April and 3 May,an event organised by the Mallorca AeronauticalFederation that commemorates the 100 years ofSpanish seaplane aviation since its first edition inPorto Colom. Some twenty seaplanes, light planes, helicopters,gliders and others took part in the event. This year’sedition was backed by the Spanish Air Force and thePollença Town Council, with around 10,000 peoplewatching the spectacular air display. The showkicked off with a land-based exhibition at the airbase

of a dozen seaplanes from nine different countries,as well as two Canadair water bombers from the43rd Group of the Spanish Air Force. Al igual que sucede en otros pueblos y ciu-dades ribereños del Mediterráneo espa-ñol, esta tradición cívico religiosa revive lassangrientas batallas entre los piratas ber-beriscos y los habitantes de las poblacio-nes costeras que sufrían sus incursiones alo largo de los siglos.La “fiesta” del 2 de agosto comienza alamanecer. Concretamente a las cinco dela madrugada, después de la verbena,cuando la banda de música toca laAlborada, y muchos de los asistentes, sinhaber dormido, siguen en marcha para lalarga jornada festiva que se prolongaráhasta bastantes horas después del atarde-cer, tras la victoria sobre las “fuerzas asal-tantes” y la posterior celebración. Es de madrugada cuando se anuncia la

llegada de los corsarios para que losvecinos se preparen, pero no es hasta elatardecer, tras concluir la procesión dela antigua imagen de la Patrona, cuandose dé vida a la recreación de la batallade los moros contra los cristianos, querememora la histórica batalla de 1.550.

COSSIERS: BALL DE L’OFERTALa ceremonia religiosa de ese día se ini-cia con la misa en honor a la Mare deDéu dels Àngels, a las 11.00 de la maña-na. Posteriormente tiene lugar el emotivobaile de “l’ oferta” que llevan a cabo los“cossiers”. En este baile popular, comúncon otros pueblos de Mallorca, los baila-dores suelen ser doce “cossiers” (aun-que el número es variable) y

la dama. Normalmente el baile serealiza trazando un círculo, con la damaen el centro.Los “cossiers” de Pollença se dejaron debailar en el año 1910. En 1981, trassetenta años de no actuar, se incorpora-ron al día de la Patrona, gracias al impul-so de Francisca Niu y dos jóvenes queconsiguieron recuperar esta tradición, conla colaboración de Sa Nostra, que pagólos vestidos. Participan en ella los representan-tes de la Iglesia, autoridades y los inte-grantes de l´Ajuntament Vella que repre-sentan a la autoridad local que regía elpueblo en 1550. Los cristia-nos, vestidos con túnicas blancas yarmados con palos, se enfrentan ruda-mente y con fuerte griterío a las tropasinvasoras, ataviadas con vestidos decolores y con la cara pintada de negro. Los turcos van retrocediendo por la calleMajor y al llegar a Can Nogués se incor-pora a la batalla l’Ajuntament Vella, per-sonaje que representa al antiguo órganode gobierno en Mallorca de laUniversidad. Al llegar a la iglesia de SantJordi, se realiza otro combate que repre-senta la liberación de las mujeres, hom-bres y niños que los turcos habían ence-rrado allí. La batalla continúa hasta elantiguo campo de fútbol, donde tienelugar el último enfrentamiento. Tras la victoria, Joan Más toma la banderaturca de la media luna y se dirige a laparroquia junto al resto de cristianos,donde se canta un Tedéum para dar gra-cias a la Virgen por la victoria. Acto segui-do empieza la fiesta donde es costumbre

EL CORSARIO DRAGUT / TURGUTTurgut Reis (1514–1565) fue un desta-cado corsario y almirante otomano.Recibió diferentes nombres en distintosidiomas, como Dragut, Dragutoy Darghouth. Su nombre originalen turco era Turgut o Torgut (reis signifi-ca “almirante”).Nació cerca de Bodrum (costa turcadel mar Egeo), en una localidad que hoyse denomina Turgutreis en su honor. Fueuno de los protegidos de Khair-ad-Din“Barbarroja”. A la muerte de Barbarroja en 1.546,Turgut, con 32 años, logró reunir unaflota de 24 bergantines,amenazando Nápoles y saqueando lacosta de Calabria. En 1550capturó Mahdia y parte de la costade Túnez.

La primera noticia sobre la presencia deDragut en las costas españolas, datande 1549, cuando al mando de 5 galerasy 16 galeotas patrulló las costas catala-nas en las que apresó «un galeón a vistade Barcelona».En 1550 apareció en la costa norte deMallorca con 20 galeras que desembar-caron entre 500 y 1.500 hombres en lascercanías de Pollença para atacar la ciu-dad, donde fue rechazado por la pobla-ción local, liderada por Joan Mas. Apesar de ello, huyó con numerosos cauti-vos. La documentación local habla de1.500 turcos desembarcados. Sinembargo, pagaron un alto precio, ya quelos isleños mataron más de 50 asaltan-tes y capturaron vivos a otros tres, altiempo que conquistaron una banderade los atacantes. De Mallorca, Dragut se dirigió a Valencia,en cuyo litoral sus hombres «tomaronmucha ropa y bastimento, especial dearroz, en un lugar sin gente». Se dirigióposteriormente a Cullera, localidad en laque entraron sorpresivamente por lanoche 300 turcos, cautivando a casi todos

Turgut devastó Calabria en 1553, lanzó unataque contra la isla de Elba yacosó Bonifacio (isla de Córcega). Cuandocapituló Bonifacio, intentó hacersecon Piombino y Portoferraio en Elba, peroregresó a Constantinopla sin lograrlo.Murió a la edad de 51 años, el 23 dejunio de 1565, después de ser herido enun terraplén de asedio al Fuerte de SanTelmo, como consecuencia de un caño-nazo. Each summer on 2 August, Pollença cel-ebrates the fiesta of its patron saint, OurLady of the Angels (Mare de Déu delsÀngels). This day also commemoratesthe Christians’ victory over the Turkishpirates of the much-feared corsairDragut, who on the night of 30 to 31 May1550 attacked the town. The day marksa very important popular tradition andafter the fiestas of Sant Joan deCiutadella is perhaps the most vibrantand significant summer celebration inthe Balearics. As happens in other towns and villagesalong the Mediterranean coastline ofSpain, this historical-religious traditionrevives the bloody battles between

Berber pirates and inhabitants of coastaltowns who had been suffering theirattacks for centuries. The “fiesta” on 2 August starts at dawn.At 5am to be exact, following the partythe night before, when the band plays LaAlborada (The Dawning), and many ofthe partygoers, without having slept, getready for the long day ahead until thevictory over the “attacking forces” andthe celebrations later on. It’s in the early hours when the arrival ofthe corsairs is announced so that localscan prepare themselves. But it’s not untilafter sunset, after the end of the proces-sion carrying the ancient image of thepatron saint, when the battle between theMoors and Christians is re-enacted to com-memorate the historical clash of 1550.

COSSIERS: BALL DE L’OFERTA(DANCE OF THE OFFERING)The day’s religious ceremony starts off at11am with a mass in honour of Our Ladyof the Angels. Then comes the emotionalDance of the Offering performed by thecossiers. In this popular dance, also heldin other villages across Mallorca, thereare usually 12 cossiers (although thismay vary) dancing in a circle around OurLady in the middle. The Pollença cossiers actually stoppedperforming in 1910. In 1981, after sev-enty years out of action, they were onceagain featured in the saint’s day celebra-tions, thanks to Francisca Niu and twoyoung people who managed to bring thistradition back to life, with help from theSa Nostra bank, which paid for the cos-tumes. Closely linked to fishermen, thePollença cossiers had traditionally

danced on St. Peter’s Day, but this hadbeen gradually dying out with the fisher-men moving to the Moll in Port dePollença. The authoritarianism of theFranco dictatorship dragged out this hia-tus and this interesting popular traditionwasn’t retrieved until several years afterthe restoration of democracy.

PROCESSIONThe religious procession with the patronsaint’s image, which takes place at 6pm,an hour before the battle, is another ofthe day’s most emotional moments.Taking part are representatives of theChurch, local authorities and membersof the Ajuntament Vella, who symbolisethe local authority that governed the vil-lage back in 1550. In the procession,they carry the local flag whilst dressed inan eye-catching almost luxurious peas-ant’s outfit.

JOAN MAS LEADS THE BATTLE In the afternoon, the action kicks off inPlaza de l’Almoina, with the encounterbetween Joan Mas, leader of theChristians, and Dragut with his lieu-tenant, head of the Ottomans. Each year at 7pm on 2 August, after thefamous cry by Joan Mas begging OurLady of the Angels to help us becausethe pirates are here, the Moors and theChristian finally come head-to-head andbattle commences. The Christians,dressed in white tunics and armed withsticks, charge at the invading troops,dressed in coloured tunics and with theirfaces blacked out. The Turks gradually pull back along CalleMajor and on reaching Can Nogués, theAjuntament Vella joins the battle. Whenthey get to the Iglesia de Sant Jordi,another combat is fought to depict therelease of the men, women and childrenwho the Turks had imprisoned there. Thebattle ensues up to the old footballground, where the final confrontationtakes place. After victory, Joan Más takes the Turkishhalf-crescent flag and heads to thechurch, where a Te Deum hymn is sungto thank Our Lady for the victory. THE CORSAIR DRAGUT / TURGUTTurgut Reis (1514–1565) was a leadingcorsair and Ottoman admiral. In differentlanguages he was known as Dragut,Draguto and Darghouth, although hisoriginal Turkish name was Turgut orTorgut (Reis means “admiral”).He was born near Bodrum (on theTurkish Aegean Sea) in a town nowknown as Turgutreis in his honour.He was one of the protégés ofHayreddin Barbarossa. Upon Barbarossa’s death in 1546, the32-year-old Turgut gained the commandof a fleet of 24 brigs, repeatedlythreatening Naples and plunderingthe coast of Calabria. In 1550, hecaptured Mahdia and part of theTunisian coastline. The first reports of Dragut’s presence off

the Spanish coast date back to 1549,when with a force of 5 galleys and 16galiots he patrolled the Catalan coastlineand seized a “galleon within sightof Barcelona”. In 1550, he appeared on the northerncoast of Mallorca with 20 galleys thatoffloaded between 500 and 1,500 menin the vicinity of Pollença to attack thetown, where they were driven back by thelocal population, led by Joan Mas. Inspite of this, he fled with numerous cap-tives. Local documents mention up to1,500 Turkish boats arriving. However,they paid a high price, as the islanderskilled over 50 assailants and capturedanother three alive, whilst also overpow-ering the attackers’ flag. From Mallorca, Dragut set sail for thecoast of Valencia, where his men “took agreat deal of clothing and supplies, par-ticularly rice, in a place without people”.He then headed to Cullera, a town that300 Turks raided by surprise one night,capturing almost all the inhabitants andseizing their possessions. The event

caused a great commotion. In August 1551, he attacked and con-quered Tripoli (Libya), which had been animportant coastal possession defendedby the Order of Malta.As a reward for his bravery, SultanSuleyman the Magnificent awarded himTripoli and the surrounding area, grantinghim the title of Sanjak Bey, commander-in-chief of the Ottoman armada, whichresulted in him being deployed to Italy(as part of a treaty between the Sultanand King Henry II of France). Turgut devastated Calabria in 1553,launched an attack on the island of Elbaand barraged Bonifacio (Corsica). WhenBonifacio surrendered, he tried to takePiombino and Portoferraio en Elba, buteventually gave up and returned toConstantinople. He died at the age offifty-one, on 23 June 1565, after beinginjured by debris from a cannon shotfired during the bombardment of the FortSt. Elmo. His body was buried in Tripoli.

recibieron un fuerte impulso técnico y un reconoci-miento a nivel nacional e internacional. Tienencaracterísticas singulares, una elevada calidad y unareconocida personalidad.En el año 2007 se publicó la Orden de la Consejeríade Agricultura y Pesca de 13 de abril, por la cual sereconoció y reguló la denominación geográfica“Mallorca” para los vinos con derecho a la mencióntradicional “vino de la tierra” producidos en la islade Mallorca.Recorriendo bodegas y viñedos, entre tanta belleza ydelicias, encontramos Vinyes Mortitx, en un lugarúnico de la sierra de Tramuntana, y a casi 400metros del nivel del mar.

Mallorca is a land of wine and vineyards. Wine pro-duction on this beautiful Mediterranean island datesback to the sixth and seventh centuries BC. UnderRoman occupation, vines were introduced in theyear 123 BC and cultivation began. Mallorca thengained fame for its important wine production activi-ty. Despite the Arab conquest, vineyards continuedin production, even though the wine couldn’t bedrunk for religious reasons. The years went by andMallorcan vineyards kept on growing and growing (soto speak). There were dark moments in history,though, with plagues and wars, but in Mallorca wineproduction always burst back. It was in the 20th century when Mallorcan winesreceived a great impulse and recognition on a natio-nal and international level. They have unique charac-teristics, a high level of quality and a widely-recogni-sed personality. In 2007, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishingpublished a decree acknowledging and regulatingthe “Mallorca” designation of origin for local winesproduced on the island of Mallorca.Taking a trip around bodegas and vineyards, setamongst such beauty, we come across VinyesMortitx, in a unique setting in the Sierra deTramuntana at almost 400 metres above sea level. any undesired biochemical alteration to the wines. To age the wines, it uses French, American andHungarian oak barrels, some of them standing outfor being slightly toasted when produced. The bodega also has its own bottling and labellingsection. Noble grape varieties such as Syrah, Merlotand Cabernet Sauvignon have adapted perfectly tothe soils of the estate, delivering extremely high qua-lity red wines. Each wine boasts its own personalityand unique quality.As of today, there are 40,000 Syrah, Merlot,Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell vines for theproduction of reds, and Malavasia for whites. INSTALACIONESEl Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença ocupa una superficie de 23.635 m2. ganados al mar con uncalado de 2,80 m. en la bocana y 2,70 m. en el interior, con un dique de 400 m. que abriga 375amarres, de 10 x 3,5 m. hasta 25 x 6 m., 225 con concesión a socios y 150 del Club, de los que75 son para transeúntes, todos ellos con servicio de agua y electricidad.El local social ocupa una superficie aproximada de 2.500 m2. que incluye bar, restaurante, terra-zas, piscina, solarium, salón, sala de juntas, oficinas, servicios y vestuarios. Está presidido por unbusto de S.A.R el Príncipe Felipe, obra de Robert Brotherton, y por un mosaico del artista Pitt Cürlisjunto a la piscina.

INSTALLATIONSThe Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença occupies an area of 23,635 square metres, with adepth of 2.8 metres at the entrance from the sea and 2.7 metres inside. There are 400 metresof dock that provide 375 moorings of 10 x 3.5 metres up to 25 x 6 metres, 225 of which aremembers’ concessions and 150 for the club, of which 75 are for those in transit. All have waterand electricity.The social centre occupies an area of about 2,500 square metres including a bar, restaurant,terraces, swimming pool, solarium, lounge, meeting room, offices, toilets and cloakrooms. Itcontains a bust of HRH Prince Felipe, the work of Robert Brotherton, and a mosaic by artistPitt Cürlis alongside the swimming pool.
