Zillertal Alps Nature Park Dear Nature Park Enthusiast,

Our Nature Park is a high alpine conservation area in the truest sense of the words. It extends from the traditional mountaineering village of Ginzling to the Hochfeiler Peak at 3,509 m. Five different sub-valleys, narrow gorges, glaciated summits, innate and cultivated landscapes as well as an extraordinary biodiversity are its’ defining characteristics.

We invite you to discover the Nature Park together with our guides and find out more about the region. There is something to suit everyone – with hikes to the Berlin Hut, herbal walks and an ascent to Mount Ahorn’s peak with Peter Habeler.

We highly recommend a visit to the Nature Park House, as well as staying with one of our partner companies who work in close collaboration with the Nature Park. Guests of our part-ner companies can participate in all our Nature Park hikes and visit the exhibition at the Nature Park House for free.

The Nature Park is waiting to be discovered by you!

The Nature Park Team, Manager Willi Seifert, Katharina Weiskopf, Karin Bauer

Events 2014 Lecture: „Glacier & Man – The past, present & future of a frosty relationship“ - 31.07. Man’s relationship with glaciers is diverse and has changed constantly over the course of time. This deve-lopment spans from the erstwhile fear of glaciers to the current and future concern for glaciers, which are threatened both by climate change and economic interests. This presentation focuses on all these issues in the form of a “journey through time”, that sheds light on the social and scientific aspects of alpine glaciers in a spatial and temporal perspective. Lecture by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Karl Lieb: Thursday, 31st July, 19:30 hrs, Ginzling Mehrzweckgebäude, free admission.

Excursion: „Glacier change over space and time – demonstrated by Zemmgrund“ - 01.08. The excursion leads into glacier dominated Zemmgrund, which owes not only its scenic beauty, but also its mountaineering and scientific tradition to glacial history. The changes in the glacier are explained along the „Glacier Trail Berliner Hut“ and shown in a broad scientific and cultural-historical context. Here, Prof. Lieb demonstrates his years of knowledge and great experience of many alpine glaciers.Friday, 1st August, meeting point 08:45 hrs at Breitlahner Guest House, free participation.

Naturparkfest und Naturparkwandertag - Samstag 16. 08. Nature Park Festival for visitors of all ages in Ginzling, accompanied by a communal hike from the Nature Park House into Floi-tengrund, with info stations on natural history and food stalls. Along the walk there are stations manned by our Nature Park gui-des, as well as a Nature park crafts in Ginzling at the Nature Park Festival. We are going to build a giant wild bee hotel together.

Scary night at the Nature park House - Saturday 10.10. Caves, bats and creepy stories by Alfred Kröll! After which you can look forward to a night full of cave adven-ture in the Nature Park House with Katharina. Suitable for children aged 9-12 years, with a night hike, games and breakfast together. Please bring sleepwear, sleeping bag, torch and a self drawn picture of a cave! Begins at 17:00 hrs. Advance registration required

Children’s programme in the “Glocke” protected area. Together we can discover the Glocke, an island full of botanical features with a fas-cinating ravine forest. While we pretend to be forest pixies, we learn about the forest from the forest and investigate the Glocke using our imagination and creativity. The focus is on children and their natural inquisitiveness during this family hike.Particularly suitable for children aged 3 – 9 years.

Zillergrund & the Steinbock.Worlds (alpine ibex) Hike to the „King of the Mountains“ Walter Ludl

Starting at Gasthof Au, we walk along the River Ziller to Bärenbad. After a rest, we then carry on past the Steinbock.Worlds and on to the Zillergründl Reservoir. The alpine ibex is an animal with a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th century there was a population of several hundred animals in this region. After violent clashes between the official hunters and poachers, the Archbishop of Salzburg ordered that the species should be eradicated in an attempt to prevent further confrontations. Despite attempts to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only limited success has been enjoyed. As sightings of ibex in the wild are rare, you will appreciate the opportunity of seeing them at the Steinbock.Worlds.

In the footsteps of hunters and gatherers Exciting journey into the history of the Pfitscher Joch Hermann MuiggWe will walk in the area around the Pfitscher Joch, a striking alpine crossing from South Tyrol to the Zillertal Valley and the site of some recent sensational Stone Age finds! During our journey back in time we will walk along the same paths used by Stone Age hunters. Back then, where you found animals, you could find people. They followed the animals, thereby ensuring their own sur-vival. Elevated look-out points, a Stone Age camp and former “workshops” can often be seen right next to the trail – we gain an intense insight into the lives of the mountain folk. The exciting „Bound-less Pfitscher Joch “exhibition at the Lavitzalm -which we will visit - is dedicated to this theme. We can also learn interesting facts on the “eternal ice” and how glaciers have shaped the landscape.

Nature Park Mountain Refuge Huts Discover the landscapes that shaped alpine history Hans Knauer

„In defiance of the storm, refuge for the wanderer“ – this maxim is carved in stone on the gable of the imposing Berliner Hut. Approximately one hundred to one hundred and fifty years ago, the German and Austrian Alpine Associa-tions gradually built shelters in inhospitable alpine locations, in predominantly breathtakingly beautiful spots that are well worth making the effort to visit. Our Nature Park guides will explain how nature changes at increasing altitude levels, right up to the borders with rock and ice, where its inhabitants benefit from the situation or where nature knows its limits.

We set off in Lanersbach from the Tux-Center, a forest road leads us to our first goal, the Höllensteinhütte (1710 m). From there we are on the traces of the Swiss pine, that has given its name to this tour. We continue our walk towards the Grieralm (1787 m) with its lovely little lake, the „Griererlacke“. From there beautiful views of the Tux Alps and the valley can be enjoyed. The walk continues at a relatively constantly level through alpine pastures to the Tulferalm (1700 m). Berliner Hut: Geology & Glaciers The „ Berliner Hütte“ glacier trail in the Zemmgrund Maria Fankhauser

The Berliner Hut is a popular base for mountain and glacier researchers. Embedded in a magnificent alpine scenery, the Berliner Hut is a symbol for the history of alpinism in the Zillertal valley. The deterioration of alpine glaciers is a visible indication of climate change. We will hike along the the-med trail between Hornkees and Waxeggkees whilst finding out interesting facts on geology, formation of the Alps and its’ glaciers.

Up to the Elsalm “Melchermuas” – dairy man’s pancake and alpine farming Ilja BosWe will walk from the Tux Center along a narrow mountain path towards Tettenjoch and on to Elsalm at 1865 m above sea level. If you listen carefully, you will hear the marmots whistling. These animals have made their lairs in the stone walls of the neighbouring alpine pastures. By keeping the area clear of mountain pine, pastures are able to thrive with an incredible biodiversity. Young people help alpine farmers maintain these “environmental construction sites”. The farmer will tell us all about this project while spoiling us with a serving of “Melchermuas”, a traditional alpine meal which they prepare themselves using butter, flour, milk and a pinch of salt. Our way back leads us up to the Kreuzjoch, and from there with a the descent back to Lanersbach.

Volunteering for Nature: Mountain farming daily life Bio-diverse mountain meadows in GinzlingMaria Fankhauser

The Zillertal Alps Nature Park is committed to protecting the habitat of numerous animal and plant species. With this in mind, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to serve to protect nature in an honorary capacity. Our mission is to en-courage people to volunteer for this good cause and spend one day of their holiday trying to help mountain farmers in their day-to-day lives. Support them together with the Nature Park Rangers in caring for their species-rich, rough pasturelands. These are an important food source for dairy far-ming and the basis for high quality dairy products! The grazing areas are located at 1,000 metres above sea level in Ginzling and it is imperative they are preserved for future generations.

Volunteering for Nature: Himaylayan Balsam Protect the local plant lifeAndrea Sporer

Himaylayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) stems originally from the In-dian subcontinent. It was brought to Europe in the 19th Century as an or-namental plant and has since quickly proliferated, often uncontrollably. It grows mainly in damp woods and along the banks of streams, displacing the diverse local flora. At selected locations we will remove these foreign plants together with the Nature Park Rangers and restore the habitat for native plant life. We could almost be called the “alien species slayers” in the Nature Park region...

Meeting point: 8.45 hrs – Europahaus MayrhofenDates: 03.07. and 08.07.Duration: 7 hours, 6 of which are spent doing volunteer activities – 1 hour for lunchCharacteristics: Elimination of alien speciesEquipment: Weatherproof clothing & sturdy shoes – tools will be providedArriving by bus: 08.11 hrs dep. Nature Park Rangers: The nature pros are out and about for you! Discover the special characteristics of the region with the Rangers

What do Rangers actually do?The Rangers are out and about in the Nature Park twice a week in summer. Whilst underway, they inform visitors about the nature reserve and its special features: geology, glaciers, animals, plants, alpine farm life and lots more. The Rangers, however, have even more to offer. Nature Park visitors can observe and experience nature right up close at their various stations. Using binoculars and a telescope, the Rangers will help you identify otherwise invisible details both near and far: The World of Ice Giants, wild animals that live in high alpine landscapes, as well as the beauty of the alpine flora. They are, of course, more than happy to share their extensive knowledge and give advice on walks and excursions, how to behave correctly in the wild and much more.

Page 53: Naturpark sommerprogramm 2014_englisch

The Rangers are out and about along the Nature Park hiking trails twice weekly from 14th June to 15th September 2014. If you know where they are working you are bound to meet up with them. You can find out where they are on the event overview from page 9, along with lots more information from the Online Ranger Diary under: blog.naturpark-zillertal.atThrilling encounters, animated conversations and great experiences are guaranteed!

Our Ranger TeamThe Nature Park has four Rangers - Andrea, Maria, Alfred and Hermann. They are specially trained and advocates of high quality and competent visitor information.

When and where are the Rangers underway?

Clean MountainsThe Rangers pay great attention to keeping the trails clean and tidy and remove any debris they may find. However, this shouldn’t be happening in the first place - remember: waste has a long life, so take your rubbish home with you!

„Steinbock.Worlds“ - Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund. The alpine ibex is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th century the-

re was a population of several hundred animals, which was eradicated in a few years. Despite attempts to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only limited success has been enjoyed. A small popula-tion currently lives wild in the depths of the valleys, although seldom seen by visitors to the Nature Park. You can find out interesting information on the ibex at the Steinbock.Welten in Zillergrund, as well as enjoy the opportunity to see a few live examples up close. Open daily in summer. Free admission!

„Glacier.Worlds“ - Nature Park House Ginzling This is no exhibition in the nor-mal sense of the word: No glass showcases, no boring information boards, but rather interactive, mul-timedia stations with a hands-on approach: see, touch and com-prehend. The public Alpine Lib-rary is also located in the Nature Park House. A small selection of

books and maps as well as Nature Park gifts with our „Zillertaler Gletscherfloh“ logo is availa-ble for sale at the Nature Park Shop. ... Open daily in summer from 8.30 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 17.00 hours!

Exhibition „Hidden Treasures“ at the Mehlerhaus in Tux-Madseit A new exhibition will be opening its doors in 2014 at the listed Mehler-haus in Tux. It is dedicated to the treasures found inside mountains and caves: the geology, the crys-tals and exciting cave finds will be

on display and a thousand year old piece of wood tells the history of its discovery... July - September: Monday & Friday open from 13.00-18.00 hrs, free admission!

Cultur.Landscape.Worlds - Mitterstall Brandberg Cultural.Landscape.Worlds - one of the mountain farming cultural monuments in the Nature Park Region is the Mitterstall (Mitter Barn). After renovation work was completed on this listed building in 2010, Mitterstall forms the centre piece of a Na-

ture Park exhibition called, „Brandberg – our cultu-ral landscape through the ages“. The exhibition is spread over three rooms and tells of the harsh con-ditions alpine farmers had to endure, with details on the characteristic landscapes of pastures, mountain meadows and includes personal stories about the lo-cal people. Open daily in summer. Free admission!
