Natural Remedies for Hair Loss

Surgery…Laser Treatment….Rogaine…Propecia….while all of these treatments are extremely popular forhair loss, some men and women prefer more natural (and cheaper!) alternatives for hair loss remedies. Certain essential oils have been shown to stimulate hair follicles and increase circulation to the scalp. This in turn helps slow hair loss. Massage the oil of your choice (or create a combination) into your scalpfor at least two minutes per day. Wrap your hair in a warm towel for approximately thirty minutes to let theoils permeate your scalp and hair follicles. Then, shampoo as normal. Here are essential oils to helpcombat hair loss:

Essential Oils for Hair Loss:

Jojoba oil – Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of jojoba trees. This oil is perfect for the hair losssufferer that is losing hair for non-genetic related reasons such as scalp dermatitis, dandruff or excessivesebum buildup. Extensive dryness of the scalp can lead to dandruff and subsequently hair loss. Jojoba oilis an incredible moisturizer that does not leave any residue. Jojoba oil is also used as a scalp cleanser thathelps get rid of buildup (sebum) which can block hair follicles from growing. Apply jojoba oil on the scalp, wait a few minutes, then wash off.

Saw palmetto – Saw palmetto is a natural way to block 5a-reductase (similar to finasteride), whichconverts testosterone to DHT. DHT is responsible for hair loss. Saw palmetto comes in different forms, such as whole dried berries, tablets, liquid extracts and powdered capsules.

Biotin – Biotin is a Vitamin B complex and is found in foods such as carrots, liver, yeast, and bananas.Biotin deficiency can cause decreased appetite, dermatitis, achromotrichia (loss of pigment in hair) andalopecia (hair loss.) Pregnant and nursing mothers often experience lower levels of biotin. Biotinsupplements can promote healthy hair growth and prevent hair dryness. Biotin also increases the elasticityof hair, thereby minimizing hair breakage.

Argan oil – Argan oil is a natural, plant-derived oil that is rich in vitamin E. Argan oil is a great deepconditioning treatment that improves the condition of your existing hair. Healthy and nourished hairappears fuller and thicker. Argan oil however is NOT a DHT blocker and will not prevent hair loss. It is bestto apply argan oil on damp hair and wrap a towel around your head to help the oil penetrate, prior torinsing. You can also massage argan oil into your scalp.

Caffeine –

Research has recently shown that caffeine stimulates the hair shaft and helps it grow faster by blockingthe effects of DHT, which causes hair loss. 50-60 cups of coffee per day (not recommended!) would beneeded for an adequate does, so shampoos infused with caffeine are your best bet. You can also try toDIY your own coffee oil recipe!

Licorice –

The licorice root is good for dry, irritated scalps, as well as for treating dandruff. Licorice also has a mintytingle similar to peppermint oil, that stimulates growth. You can use a licorice oil topically or drink somelicorice tea.

Safflower –

Safflower usually comes in the form of an oil from the safflower plant, which is related to the sunflower. The seeds of the safflower are pressed into oil. Safflower oil is rich in vitamin E and oleic acid whichpenetrates the skin easily. When applied to the scalp, it acts as a vasodilator which dilates the bloodvessels, which in turn increases blood circulation and brings more nutrients to the hair follicles (promotinghair growth). Safflower petals can also be consumed as a tea.

Emu Oil – Oil that comes from the emu, which is related to the ostrich. Emus are farmed around the worldfor their red meat. The oil is taken from fat in the back of the bird. Native aborigines used emu oil to healwounds. Emu oil has anti-inflammatory properties which promotes a healthy scalp. It is also non-comedogenic, which means it does not clog pores. As emu oil is very well absorbed through human skin, itis recommended to use it on your scalp along with a treatment that helps reverse hair loss (such asminoxidil). Emu oil helps transport ingredients through the skin, so it may help hair loss medication to workmore effectively.

Coconut Oil – Although not technically an “essential oil, ” coconut oil is very helpful in aiding with hairloss. Benefits of coconut oil for the hair are:

– Moisturizes scalp and hair– Consists of three different fatty acids which makes an effective antifungal, getting rid of dandruff– Helps hair from losing protein– Contains Vitamin E– Gives hair a healthy shine!

One Hour and Some Coconut Oil May Be All You Need for Healthier Hair

There has a been a recent trend in using coconut oil for cooking for better health inside, but did you knowthat it can also help to improve your appearance on the outside? Research and experience has proventhat when used externally, your newest favorite cooking product works wonders on your skin and hair.

In one study conducted that compared coconut oil against mineral and sunflower oils, it was found that thecoconut oil was the only one which could reduce protein loss, even with hair that was already damaged.Further examination showed that while this was true whether used before or after washing, the best resultsproved to be when coconut oil was being used as a part of a pre-wash treatment. This is due to the oil’sability to repel water.

How to Use Coconut Oil as a Pre-Wash Conditioner

For healthy shiny hair the natural way, all you need is a bottle of virgin coconut oil and a shower cap.Slightly dampen your hair and then apply about a quarter sized amount of the coconut oil to the palm ofyour hand. Rub your hands together so that the oil is on your fingers as well, and then run them throughyour hair. Focus on making sure that the oil is even distributed from root to the end of the hair shafts. Forlonger hair you may need to apply a little more oil to your hands.

Once you are satisfied that all of your hair has been covered in coconut oil, wrap it inside of the showercap and let it sit for an hour. Not only does the cap keep your hair in place and oil off of your clothes, theheat created will increase absorption of the coconut oil into the strands.

After the hour is up it is time to wash your hair as normal. A small amount of the coconut will actuallypenetrate deeper into the hair shaft as the fiber swells during washing, helping to prevent your hair fromfrizzing in humid weather.

Most will find that this treatment with coconut oil is only needed every three to four days, but if you dyeyour hair, have a perm or use heating devices when styling your hair you will find it beneficial to conditionyour hair with coconut oil more often. Not only will this help retain the luster and shine of your hair, it couldprevent other issues such as breakage and premature hair loss.

The trend towards finding natural remedies to our health and beauty issues has led to some very surprisingdiscoveries. Rather than risk damage to your hair or even hair loss with manufactured products, you canrestore the luster and retain your hair longer by using coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner. That one hourspent will have an amazing effect on the vitality of your hair for days afterwards.
