The leaves as well as the roots were made into different kinds of remedies for internal—inside the body‐‐ and external—outside the body‐‐ medical problems.

• Plants and flowers were dried and made into dry powders and pastes.

• Sometimes people heated or burned plant parts and inhaled the  vapors, steam, or smoke.

How did they know what to use?• Ohlone women and men would observe animals to see what they ate. This is one way to know what kinds of plants to use.

Sagebrush 

California sagebrush was dried and burned in ceremonies and rituals  as well as used in herbal remedies. If a child had a cut, an Ohlone mother might make a compress or bandage from the leaves of the California sagebrush to be applied to the wound.

Balsamea

• The leaves of the Mexican Balsamea were used in a tea and were given to sick children to reduce very high fevers.

Poppies

• Ohlone women would use two California poppy flowers underneath a pillow or mat to help a child rest or sleep. 

• However, California Poppy was and is considered poisonous and pregnant Ohlone women were cautioned not to use or handle the plant.

Mallow

When a child was sick an Ohlonemother might take the roots of a native species of Mallow plant and make a tea. That tea would reduce a fever.

Lizard’s Tail

A pain‐killing tea was made from the roots of Saururaceae or Lizard’s Tail (known to the Spaniards as Yerba Mansa). It was consumed as tea, and also used to wash cuts and relieve pain.

Lizard’s Tail

Sometimes a fine powder was made from the dried roots of the Yerba Mansa (Lizard’s Tail) plant. This was sprinkled on a open wound to disinfect it.

Milkweed

• Dried Milkweed was use to treat asthma. It was burned and people inhaled the smoke. A tea was also made for nursing women to help them with the flow of breast milk.

Wild berry 

Often fresh wild raspberry leaves were used as tea to induce labor or speed up delivery in childbirth.

Horsetail • Horsetail was used in a tea to help women relieve pain from menstrual cramps, and to help everyone who had  bladder problems.

Take the time to look all around us and see what the world has to offer.   It is an amazing source of good things. The Amah Mutsun people knew this and showed us many ways to appreciate it!
