Don’t Miss This Year’s Breakfast of Champions…and Keynote Speaker USCG (Ret.) Capt. Larry Brudnicki

The Breakfast of Champions is always a terrific way to kick off the annual competitions of the American trucking industry’s safest drivers, and the law enforcement community’s top roadside inspectors from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. This year – whether you are competing or not on Thursday – set aside August 16, from 7:45 AM – 9:15 AM to enjoy breakfast with family, friends, colleagues and supporters, hearing from top industry and regulatory representatives, and this year’s Key Note Speaker USCG (Ret.) Capt. Larry Brudnicki.

Captain Brudnicki commanded the Coast Guard Ship that performed two dramatic rescues during the worst weather in more than 100 years, which became known as “The Perfect Storm” and inspired the book that was on the NY Times best-seller list and the blockbuster movie starring George Clooney.

During this year’s Breakfast of Champions, Capt. Brudnicki will deliver a powerful and inspirational address that relates his legendary experiences on the high seas. Ride with him as he relives the dramatic story of two daring rescue missions during the worst weather in more than 100 years! Learn how courage and leadership helped him to survive in the hostile environment of “The Perfect Storm!”

So that everyone can enjoy breakfast and the presentations, competing drivers will have fifteen minutes from the actual conclusion of the breakfast program to report to their bullpens.

9:30 a.m. (approximate) Contestants in the following Classes must be in their bullpen rooms immediately following the conclusion of the Breakfast of Champions prior to competing in both the Skills Test and Pre-Trip Inspection

THINGS TO DO IN COLUMBUS Have a blast at Columbus’ attractions. Shop at the North Market’s more than 30 merchants and the Short North Arts District’s galleries and boutiques. Tour the beautifully restored Ohio Statehouse and explore the shops in historic German Village. Hang out in the Heart of Africa at “Jungle” Jack Hanna’s home zoo, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, or get hands-on at COSI, a top-rated science center featuring more than 300 interactive exhibits. Check out Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the only botanical garden in the world with a permanent collection of glass artwork by Dale Chihuly, then hit Easton, the Midwest’s premier shopping destination.

The Scioto Mile recently renovated and created 33 new acres of parkland in downtown Columbus. With miles of multi-use trails stretching from Bicentennial Plaza in the south to North Bank Park in the North, this is a great spot to take a stroll and enjoy both the city and nature. Bicentennial Park hosts free concerts on summer weekends, and a huge set of fountains create a fun environment for kids to play in during the daylight hours. By night, sip a local cocktail or grab a burger at Milestone 229 and watch the fountain displays change through the evening. A trail leading south from Bicentennial Plaza leads you to the Scioto Audubon Metropark, an important birding area with a nature center, the largest free climbing wall in the nation, and lots of natural areas to explore. Even though it’s in the heart of downtown, the Scioto Mile is a great place to enjoy nature. Waterfoul abound, and paddling is encouraged.
