FROM THE PRESIDENTBob Meyers | President & C.O.O

Don’t take my word for it. Look at the statistics on the following page. They give you a brief snapshot of the way NPF is affecting journalists and journalism.

As platforms have changed, as the tools of the trade have changed, the National Press Foundation has steadfastly continued its mission of educating journalists so journalists can educate the public. It is the

public, and its thirst for knowledge as it pursues its democratic vision, that is at the heart of all NPF’s activities.

If I can answer any questions, please contact me directly:

PROGRAMS

The National Press Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that produces free professional development programs for journalists and other communities. We aim to increase their knowledge of complex issues and their ability to convey that knowledge across

Located in Washington, D.C., NPF is ideally situated to provide programs for journalists highlighting the issues of our time. These include: the Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowships, Capitol Hill briefings and one-day programs for Washington reporters. NPF also hosts longer programs on various topics that bring together journalists from across the U.S. Those selected to participate are provided transportation and lodging in addition to the program at no cost.

The Washington Beat Book on NPF’s website provides quick access to sources and information on more than 50 government agencies and topics for anyone who needs it.

Internationally, and with international journalists, NPF works under the banner “Journalist to Journalist” to convey the idea of journalists around the world learning together across borders. Journalist to Journalist media training programs are often in collaboration with an international conference, allowing participating journalists to attend the conference after a specific media training on that subject matter. This leads to more accurate and more thorough coverage of the topic.

In 2013, NPF produced and broadcasted 18 hour-long webinars on topics ranging from health care, politics, agriculture, and new media.

It was very informative to learn about the different nuances of TB... Moreover, it gave me an opportunity to dessiminate the information among fellow journalists.“

media platforms to the public. Better journalism leads to improved social understanding.

Since 1976, the National Press Foundation has provided opportunities to more than 6,000 editors, producers and reporters in print, broadcast and online media. Our programs educate journalists in the nation’s capital, around the country and overseas.

It offers fresh sources, story ideas and unparalleled opportunities to get to know and learn from other journalists. On-the-record access to officials, experts and seasoned journalists, along with site visits enhance and add insight to journalists’ work.

The fellows visited Congress during a Fall 2013 session.

The Paul Miller Alumni Group was formed to extend the benefits of the Paul Miller fellowship beyond the program year and to explore ways the fellows could “give back” to other journalists. In 2013 they developed a very active email listserve which was put to good use planning networking events and one educational day. The three after-work social events included two with the current class of Paul Miller fellows, a fun and useful convergence.

The fourth event was a Social Media Day, attended by 17 alumni on June 19, 2014 at the NPF office. A morning session for beginners covered how to develop a social media presence. An evening session for advanced users focused on ethics and emerging technologies.

Linda Topping Streitfeld Director of Programs

Current NPF Staff Members

Bob Meyers joined the foundation in 1993 as director of its Washington Journalism Center. He was appointed president of the foundation in 1995. From 1989 to 1993 Meyers was director of the Harvard Journalism Fellowship for Advanced Studies in Public Health. He is a former reporter for The Washington Post, and a former assistant city editor at the San Diego Union. As a stringer for The Post he worked on the Watergate investigation from Los Angeles, focusing on the “dirty tricks” campaign

that was a part of the paper’s Pulitzer Prize winning Public Service package. As a Post staffer he was nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize. He has written two books, “Like Normal People” and “D.E.S.: The Bitter Pill.” “Like Normal People” is the story of his mentally handicapped younger brother and the family’s efforts to help him lead a normal life. It was turned into a made-for-TV movie in 1979 and was nominated for a National Book Award. “D.E.S.: The Bitter Pill” was the story of a widely used anti-miscarriage drug that had enormous social and medical consequences.

At NPF Meyers expanded the foundation’s U.S.-based programs, and originated its

international programs, called Journalist-to-Journalist ™, which have focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and lung disease, and other topics.

Educated in the New York City public schools system and at UCLA, he was awarded an academic fellowship at Harvard’s Center for Health Communication in 1987-88. He is a member of the Fellowship Advisory Board of the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism. There, she was published in the Herald’s Tropic magazine, and as an editor, worked on coverage of the 2000 presidential election; education in the nation’s sixth-largest school district; growth and development; government and politics; and plenty of hurricanes and near-misses.

She edited an award-winning series that exposed property tax schemes costing the state millions each year, and was part of the staff that won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1993 after Hurricane Andrew.
