FROM THE HISTORY OF THE BRITISH FLAG

This is the popular name given to the flag of Great Britain.

Actually it is called the Union Flag and is a mixture of severalflags. It all began in 1606 when Scotland was joined toEngland and Wales.

The Scottish flag, St. Andrews Cross, blue with a whitecross from corner to corner, was joined to the English flag, St.Georges Cross, white with a red cross. The flag of St. George

can still be seen on churches in England.Later, in 1801, when Ireland was joined to the Union, as it

was called, the Irish Flag of St. Patricks Cross was added, white with a red cross from corner to corner.

In this way the English people got the Union Flag whichis red, white and blue. King James the Third (1566-1622)ordered that the Union Flag should be flown on the mainmast of all British ships, except on ships of war. Here the flagwas flown at the front of the ships, on what is called the JackStar and so we get the name of Union Jack. A jack, by theway, is an old word for the sailor. The Union Jack is also onthe flags of Australia and New Zealand.

A red roseis the floral symbol of England

There are two stories about the emblem of

England: The first story says that the red rose wasthe emblem of the Lancastrians and the white

rose that of the Yorkists, the two contending Houses for the Englishthrone in the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485). The struggle between theRoses came to an end with the marriage of Henry VII, a Lancastrian, toPrincess Elizabeth, daughter of Edward IV, a Yorkist. Since then the

red rose has been the national emblem of England. The other story tells thatin the 15th century there was a series of warsin England, which were called the wars of Roses. They were betweenthe Dukes of Lancaster and the Dukes of York over who should beKing. The emblem of Lancaster was the red rose and the emblem ofYork was the white rose. A thistle is the floral symbol of Scotland

The thistle is the floral symbol of Scotland. Thisis how it came to be chosen as the symbol.Long, long ago the Norsemen once landed onthe east coast of Scotland with the aim to settlein the country. The Scots assembled to defendtheir country behind the river Tay, the largest in

Scotland. As they arrived late in the day, tiredafter a long march, they camped by the river andrested, not expecting the enemy before the nextday. The Norsemen however were near. They decidedto cross the Tay, take the Scots by surprise and

attack them in their sleep. They took off theirshoes so as not to make much noise. But one ofthe Norsemen stepped on a thistle and shriekedloudly. The Scots woke up, and the Norsemenwere put to flight. For this timely andunexpected help the Scots took the thistle as

    their national emblem.

A shamrock is the floral symbol of

    Northern Ireland.

    This plant helped St. Patrick

explain to the people of his

country what the Holy Trinity is.

He used it in his sermons torepresent how the Father, the

Son, and the Holy Spirit could all

exist as separate elements of the

same entity. His followers adoptedthe custom of wearing a

    shamrock on his feast day.

He is also believed to save

    Ireland from snakes.

The leek and the daffodil are the

    floral symbols of Wales.

Welshmen all over the world celebrateSt. Davids Day by wearing either leeksor daffodils pinned to their coat. They arethe floral symbols of Wales. The legendsays that the patron saint of Wales,David, ate only leeks and bread. In

memory of this Christian saint, the leekbecame the floral symbol of Wales. Thedaffodil is also closely associated with St.

Davids Day, due to thebelief that it flowers on that

day. It became analternative to the leek as aWelsh emblem in thepresent century, because some peoplethought the leek vulgar.
