It is in this context that the University has taken the initiative to launch a degree &diploma programme in maritime studies at National Centre for Maritime Policy Research to undertake academic and research pursuits in the maritime domain. The objectives of the programmes emanate from the fact that despite Pakistan’s important geostrategic location abreast Arabian Sea and vast resources of untapped economic potential in Exclusive Economic Zone; training based education in maritime sector has largely remained long neglected. It is thus important for the future sustainable growth of economy and particularly for maritime sector that Pakistan must judiciously exploit sea resources, for which availability of well trained and professional human resources is a necessity.

Role of maritime sector in the economy of the country need no emphasis. Efficient maritime

sector backed by modern technology and practices is indispensable. Shipping, transportation

and port facilitator play a pivotal role in supporting trade and directly contribute towards national

economy. Despite the lack of maritime orientation at national level, the maritime community of

Karachi has been playing an important role.
