6 Retail DesignProject Description: Work with an Italian Fashion Design student to create a retail space for their new flagship store in Rome, Italy. The store will be located in a renovated space in the city center.

Concept: The new Nicoletta Ginetti Couture store uses inspiration of 17th century architecture in conjunction with the roaring twenties mentality presented in the movie, The Great Gatsby (2013). By combining the idea of the Baroque period’s drama and the lavish lifestyle of the characters from the film, the space will be an extravagant event for those who encounter it. The product will be presented like that in an art gallery; every piece will be set apart as unique. The mezzanine and ground floor will be connected with a grand staircase to impress all who enter. Artwork displayed throughout the store will feature sketches, material selection, and inspirations of Miss Ginetti’s for her exaggerated fashion. Through luxurious furnishings, individual shopping experiences, and remarkable displays, the Nicoletta Ginetti Couture store will be a space for a diverse group of customers. From those that are looking to have something made for them to those who would like to get an outfit for an event that night, each customer will be given the Couture like experience. The overall store design will be a stepping stone that provides a base for attendants to further this idea after the store is opened.

Ideation Sculpture12Project Description: Create a sculpture inspired by the Untitled, full color butterfly drawing by Mark Grotjohn in 2012. Concept: The energy given off from the drawing by Grotjohn is very strong and will be portrayed by the sculpture. While the energy seems to be radiating from the frames of the picture, the slight variance in perspective points pulls you in as well. This will be an essential aspect in the sculpture, as it will both radiate out and pull the viewer in through three dimensional form. Lastly, the sculpture will replicate the circular, never ending random pattern through randomization of colors and a mirror system to reflect the colors throughout the sculpture.

Cafe DesignProject Description: Design a cafe to be built in the Christopher Peterson Museum, located in Morrill Hall at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The cafe should be inspired by the ideation sculpture shown on pages 12-15.

Concept: The cafe will be named “Cafe Energy.” This name will represent not only the design of the space, but the feeling throughout as well. This will be done by carefully analyzing the flow throughout the space and using contrasting curves and straight edges in the furniture and decor. The color palette will be energy driven, while not becoming too overwhelming or distracting. The space will serve as a gathering area as well as a quick stop for students, faculty, and visitors through the school year and summer.

18 Luxury HomeProject Description: Develop a residential interior concept for the Gustofson couple, their ill mother, and guests. The home will be located in Wayzata, Minnesota and must combine historical influence in a contemporary form. The clients have alloted for a $1.5 million budget specifically for the interior elements.

Concept: The Gustofson residence will be designed with Islamic influence in a modern twist. The challenge of designing a home with a primarily religious influence will be achieved through the idea of balance and symmetry, a very predominant idea in the Muslim culture. Neutral taupe tones will used throughout and will be ac-cented with white trim and casework as to bring a modern feel to the space. The Gustofson couple will have their own private spaces in the residence, including a spacious master bed and bathroom, a large shared office, and an in home gym. The elderly mother in law will be given her own suite area in the lower level with a large bedroom and access to a full bath and kitchenette. In order to accommodate her medical needs, Farrow and Ball preservative free paint and wall coverings will be used throughout the home. Multiple entertainment areas with different degrees of formality will be designated for the clients to bring family and guests. The layout will focus these spaces towards the lagoon landscape on the North-west side of the home. Niches will be placed in multiple walls in order to display the client’s art and collections. The balance of these ideas will create a harmony in the home for the Gustafson family.

Small Apartment 22Project Description: Design a 1000 square foot apartment residence for the Anderson Family, made up of a single mother and her autistic son. The family is relocating from Sheffield, England to Seattle, Washington.

Concept: The Anderson Family apartment will be designed in a craftsman style, with every detail being thought out in the child’s perspective. The main entry, living, dining, and kitchen areas will emphasize the craftsman ways, while keeping chaos in color, patterns, and organization to a min-imum. The living area will embody a structure that the child feels comfortable in with either his mother or nanny. The kitchen will be organized well in order to accommodate for quick meals for 2-3 people. The individual bedroom spaces will carry on the craftsman style, but will be individualized to the occupant. The master suite will be an oasis where the mother can get away from children and relax. Though some brighter colors may be used, they will be dulled in order to accommodate the child in that space. The child’s room will be very minimalistic in an effort to not over stimulate him. It will have a small comfort area where toys can be kept, but organization and process will be critical. The small nanny’s den will serve as a place for the nanny to sleep, but also for the mother to work. It will be designed for all, but serve its purpose as needed. The overall design concept will create a comfortable home for this family and their needs.

McGrath Auto Office Renovation30Project Description: McGrath Auto is a family of auto dealerships located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The company came to Tallgrass Business Resources to update their BDC office that contains 12 employees. The space is to be new and “edgy” to fit the trend of their changing car products.Concept: As primarily a Steelcase Dealer, Kick Freestanding fur-niture system was recommended to give the space an open feel. Stationary storage pedestals were placed beneath the workspace to allow for private, large storage, as well as a secondary lower surface. To give some privacy to each employee, the Duo storage system was used as both additional storage and a small privacy screen between the work stations. To bring a new edge to the space, Shaw hexagon carpet tiles are placed in a unique pattern. The carpet tiles bring an excitement into the room to further stir comradery and positive energy for sales. Post Install: Due to reorganization of the company, the worksta-tions were no longer needed, but the client was too excited about the carpet to cancel the plans. The carpet tiles were installed, along with the addition of new chairs for the current workstations. Overall, McGrath Auto is very pleased with the result.
