The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Automatic Collision Avoidance Technology Fighter Risk Reduction Program (ACAT/FRRP) team, which includes NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, won an Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine Laureate Award for its successful development and flight test of an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System.

2008 Collier Trophy Winner: The Commercial Aviation Safety TeamFor achieving an unprecedented safety level in U.S. commercial airline operations by reducing risk of a fatal airline accident by 83 percent, resulting in two consecutive years of no commercial scheduled airline fatalities.

2007 Collier Trophy Winner: The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Team of Public and Private Sector Groups For conceptualizing, developing, and initially implementing the next generation performance-based air-ground, ground-air, and air-air surveillance system.

UH-60A Airloads Tests of blade pressures, loads, deformations, rotor performance and rotor wake visualizations were successfully completed May 2010 in collaboration with the Army in the NFAC 40x80ft wind tunnel. The UH-60 wind tunnel team has won the American Helicopter Society's Grover E. Bell Award for "encouraging research and experimentation in helicopter development."

Aviation’s Economic Impact in the U.S.The aviation industry is vital to the nation’s economic well-being

• Aviation directly or indirectly provides 997,000 Americans with jobs

• In 2006, aviation manufacturing and services accounted for $445B in direct and indirect economic activity

• In the U.S., more than 60 certified domestic carriers operate every day– They operate more than 6500 aircraft – They service almost a million travelers daily on 28,000

flights– In 2008, they had an annual operating revenue for

commercial flights of $168B• In 2008, aviation provided the nation with a trade surplus

of $57.4B

Air TrafficCongestion

DevelopmentCosts

-In 2008, U.S. major commercial carriers burned 19.6B gallons of jet fuel, and DoD burned 4.6B gallons. At an average price of $3.00/gallon, fuel cost was $73B

-FAA’s attempt to reconfigure New York airspace resulted in 14 lawsuits due to noise complaints

-Since 1980 FAA has invested over $5B in airport noise abatement programs in homes

-Airline delays in the U.S. cost industry and passengers $32.9B in 2007

-The high cost of certification for new or upgraded aviation systems is prohibitive
