John F. Sorey, III Executive Director

I am honored to be your new Executive Director. While having been involved with the theatre for fourteen years both

as President of the Board and Board member, this is a new opportunity for me. We are one of the leading community theatres in the country and your support will allow us to maintain this position. The foundation you have provided: a paid-for-state-of-the-art physical facility, sold out performances, and donations which allow us to do special programs with KidzAct being the

star, clearly demonstrates your commitment to our mission. The entire theatre team is committed to maintaining the quality of our performances, our patron orientation, and earning your continuing support every day through our performances. Look forward to a wonderful 2014-15 season.

From the Artistic Director

Our 2014-2015 season is full of award-winning works by accomplished playwrights.

Michael Frayn wrote Noises Off, our first play in the Blackburn Hall. Deemed the funniest farce ever written, the plot follows the onstage and offstage antics of a dysfunctional troupe of actors as they stumble through their final dress rehearsal, all the way to the tumultuous closing night of their low budget production of “Nothing On.” Those who love the theatre will enjoy this embellished portrayal of what truly goes on behind the scenes.

The extremely talented Donald Margulies penned our first play in the Tobye Studio, Time Stands Still. You may recognize his name considering we produced two of his shows in the past; Collected Stories in 2005 and his Pulitzer Prize winning work, Dinner With Friends in 2009. In Time Stands Still, Margulies capitalizes on his talents by creating complex characters that our audiences will emotionally connect with.

A secret gem that is not so well-known is the musical The Spitfire Grill. This heartfelt musical follows Percy, a recently released parolee, who, while trying to begin a new life, becomes influential in changing all those around her. Winner of the Richard Rogers Production Award, this musical was produced at Playwrights Horizons and received rave reviews from NY’s toughest critics. With a gripping story and “some of the most engaging and instantly infectious melodies” (USA Today), you won’t want to miss this unique musical treasure.

Yazmina Reza has won two Best Play Tony Awards, one for Art and the other for our, January Blackburn play, God of Carnage. In this comedy, a playground scuffle brings two sets of parents together to discuss how to resolve their young sons’ behavior. What starts out as a civilized conversation erupts into a primal war of words that is manically hilarious.

Red, our February Tobye show, won 6 Tony awards in 2010, the most any play has ever won. John Logan, an accomplished screenwriter,

wrote this riveting drama that is based on famed expressionist, Mark Rothko. Logan has garnered many nominations and awards for his work on such films as Any Given Sunday, Gladiator, The Aviator and the film version of Sweeney Todd for which he won a Golden Globe.

Oklahoma! is our spring musical and it is the work responsible for launching the successful songwriting collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. This beloved musical boasts unforgettable songs like, “People Will Say We’re In Love,” “Surrey With the Fringe on Top,” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” and celebrates the golden age of musical theatre.

Closing out our Tobye season is Love, Loss & What I Wore written by the dynamic duo, Nora & Delia Ephron. These screenwriting sisters have won various awards for films like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail. This Drama Desk award-winning play is an intimate collection of stories that takes a heartfelt peek into the lives of women and the clothes that conjure memories of their most significant life moments.

The Last Romance is our final show in Blackburn Hall and is written by Joe DiPietro. His is another name that may sound familiar because he wrote I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and All Shook Up, two shows that were very well received here at TNP. He is also responsible for the Tony award-winning musical Memphis. With his gift for comedic writing, DiPietro creates a funny and moving story about a widowed man getting a second chance at love in The Last Romance.

We are excited to produce these celebrated works by such distinguished writers. We hope you enjoy the show and will join us for our entire, thrilling season.

Dallas Dunnagan, Artistic Director

“A vibrant, quality community theater.” The Mission Statement of The Naples Players perfectly captures who and what we are.

The Naples Players is the most amazing organization. Unless you are told, you may not know that all of our productions are performed by volunteer amateur actors, on sets built by volunteers, in costumes sewn by volunteers, with volunteer sound, lighting and backstage crew. Yet the quality of our productions earns a very favorable comparison to even professional theaters in our area.

Indeed, The Naples Players has been honored by the readers of The Naples Daily News as The People’s Choice as “Best Live Theater” for twelve consecutive years! In addition, The Naples Players has been cited by both CNN and Money Magazine as one of the reasons Collier County is one of the five “Best Places for a Long Life” in the United States.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and staff, every year we present

ten outstanding productions, six on the Blackburn Hall main stage, and four in the more intimate Tobye Studio. In addition, our children’s program, KidzAct, presents six productions each year, during which over 600 area youngsters learn and explore the fun of the performing arts.

All of these activities and achievements would not be possible without the generous support of our volunteers, members, subscribers and donors. We extend a special “Thank You” for all who have included The Naples Players in your estate planning. (To learn more about this charitable gifting opportunity, please see the Playbill page devoted to Planned Giving).

We are exceedingly grateful for all of the support we receive, and invite all members of our community to get involved with The Naples Players – your community theater!

The Naples Players was conceived in 1952 as friends gathered for a sunset

cocktail party at the home of Henry and Mary Watkins. Leonard Latham, a theatre director from Cape Coral was in that gathering and suggested that Naples could do well with a live theatre.

It wasn’t long before another meeting was held with approximately two dozen in attendance and The Naples Players was born. The first set of minutes took place on January 19, 1953 at the Naples Women’s Club. Eight days later the troupe became a membership-driven organization with dues of one dollar. Committees were formed for play reading, casting and staging. By the third meeting, the members had $47 in the treasury and a $35 budget for their first set.

That first show, I Remember Mama, ran for one night on March 20, 1953 at the then Naples High School (now Gulf View Middle School). The show, directed by Latham, garnered rave reviews from the press. The Miami Herald wrote, “Another cultural step in the progress of this city was taken when the newly organized Naples Players gave their first performance…worthy of accomplished professionals.”

Inspired by the success of their first performance, The Naples Players approved a constitution and by-laws before the spring’s snowbirds headed north. The following season Call It A Day ran for two days and its success could be measured by the increase in the coffers from $137.80 at the start of the show to $700 at the close.

Over the next few years the members concerned themselves with the running of a community theatre, which included play selection, budgeting, casting and scene designs. Only one issue continued to plague the theatre – the desire for a venue of its own. On January 20, 1956, a petition

of incorporation was signed, notarized and submitted to the state. In June the members purchased three acres, described as “just over the bridge in Coconut Creek.”

116 members strong, The Player’s first musical, H.M.S. Pinafore, was staged 1958. With the recession of the late 1950s and slowing growth, the Players managed to produce four plays a year through 1960, while continuing to actively seek out a permanent home. Various plans for theatres were routinely presented, modified and dismissed during that time.

While some members planned for a theatre on the Coconut Creek property, others looked for alternative locations. A partnership with the Naples Art Association was discussed, as well as the idea of an arts building on the grounds of the Caribbean Gardens (now The Naples Zoo).

In the late 1950s the number of productions dropped to two per year, with just one in the 1961-1962 season. A new board was then installed and The Players created their first strategic plan. The plan called for increased publicity and an awards system (called the Lenny’s after Leonard Latham).

To compensate for decreasing revenues, dues were increased from $5 to $6 per year. The following season, the theatre staged three productions and the desire for a home of its own grew. Bonds were sold to the public and hopes ran high. However, the late 1960s saw The Players insolvent and a proposed effort with the Naples Art Association and the Naples Music Club to build a cultural center were abandoned and the Coconut Creek property was sold.

The 1970s were a busy time with shows, classes, workshops and seminars. The most notable play of the period was Fiddler on the Roof, which broke all profit records

THE MISSION OF THE NAPLES PLAYERSTo create and perform affordable, high quality amateur theatre; To encourage participation in and appreciation of theatre; and To provide educational and

enrichment opportunities and outreach programs for all residents and visitors.

and resulted in an effort to mount more artistically challenging productions such as Man of La Mancha and The Taming of the Shrew. At the start of the decade, season tickets for four shows cost $6.00, were increased to $8.00 and then to $10.00. The policy of invitation-only membership was relaxed and a simple recommendation from an existing member was sufficient for becoming a new member. Changes in marketing, pricing and membership revitalized the organization.

By the 1980s, the group was presenting four productions a year and a concerted effort to stray from audience-pleasers and comedies, resulted in productions such as A Lion in Winter and Ah Wilderness, firmly establishing The Naples Players as a serious and outstanding community theatre. Still, a home of its own eluded the group.

In 1984 a movie house was available for rent at the corner of US 41 and Goodlette Frank Road and The Players signed a lease. An architectural firm was hired for interior renovations and the Downtown Naples Rotary Club donated $6,000 for the purchase of seats. On March 16, 1985, The Naples Playhouse opened with Guys and Dolls, selling out before opening night. In 1987 a subscription for five shows cost $40.

In the 1990s the property was sold and the Playhouse was razed to make way for a retail and condominium complex. It was clear that the only way to safeguard their destiny was to build and hold the deed to its own facility. Joyce Heptner relocated to Naples and became The Players’ first Executive Director and Ted Tobye, then President,

organized the Steering Committee for the new theatre building. Sites were studied, demographics defined and designs discussed.

At that time, renowned urban planner Andrew Duany was hired to revitalize downtown Naples. His plans called for bringing the arts into the area with Cambier Park sited as the location. After meeting with opposition, the City Council, in an historic move, closed Seventh Street to vehicle traffic to create Players Plaza with an outdoor stage.

A major fundraising effort followed, architects and consultants were hired. Arrangements were made for $3 million in tax-free municipal bonds and a major line of credit was established. The bonds were never needed. The first major gift came from Frances Pew Hayes. Others soon followed by the likes of Peg and Herb Sugden, Lois and Dick Blackburn and Jay and Patty Baker. Three successive yearly grants from the State of Florida totaled nearly $1.5 million. The final result was the 1998 debt-free opening of Sugden Community Theatre on 5th Avenue South, with the play Me and My Girl.

Today The Naples Players stage more than 220 performances a year, many of them sell outs. With a subscriber base of more than 4,000, a youth program that reaches over 600 children annually, and having been voted “Best Live Theatre” for eleven consecutive years in the Naples Daily News Southwest Florida Choice Awards, the momentum continues today as strong as ever.

And, for most of these organizations’ successful operations, volunteers are essential. Altruism, that unselfish concern for the welfare of others, may be the motivation for some volunteers; but recompense, court or school mandated community service, and personal objectives are more likely to bring volunteers to the doors of their preferred organization. And guess what—it’s all good. The reason behind that initial impetus to volunteer is not as important as the individuals’ experiences with the organization that keep them coming back hour after hour for years.

The following individuals contributed 250+ volunteer hours this past year:

On Broadway in New York, someone who contributed substantially to the production of a show was known as an angel. That’s the definition The Naples Players use to

describe our angels. More specifically, a “Naples Players Angel” is someone who has contributed $1,000 or more for three or more years in a row, or $5,000 within the last three years.

Here follows a list of these consistent, straight-from-heaven supporters of The Naples Players. Look for their names elsewhere in this program, according to the specific nature and amounts of their support.

Production Notes by Susan Rojas

It’s hard to believe the holidays are almost here! We’re heading into the season of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah, a time when the thought of family, friends, and the renewal of relationships becomes even more important than usual. And that’s exactly what The Spitfire Grill is about: finding who you are, connecting with those you love, and breaking down boundaries put up so long ago. Mostly, though, it’s about hope, and how hope that seems to have ebbed away can be revived and brought back into hearts - something we need now more than ever. Hope gives purpose, as well as the strength needed to forge new relationships and start out fresh, even if you end up staying in the same place. After all, sometimes everything you’re looking for really does turn out to be right in front of you.

We all know this isn’t easy, because life is hard work! But as we watch the Spitfire characters struggle with dark pasts, unfold their personalities with first tentative steps, and look beyond old disagreements and mindsets to forgive and forget, it helps us as we try to do the very same in our own lives. As we enter the holiday season, let’s remember to take a little of their strength, perseverance, and flexibility with us. Let’s let Percy, Shelby, Sheriff Joe, and all the other Gilead folks guide us into a season of warmth, community, happiness, and hope, while enjoying the play’s home-town humor and hum-as-you-leave music.

Best wishes for the coming holidays – and watch for those colors of paradise!

The Naples Players Endowment Fund

Securing the Future for The Naples Players

Thanks largely to those patrons who have attended our performances, donated their time as volunteers, and contributed to our Operating and Endowment Funds, The

Naples Players has been very successful, and of course we mean to continue that success far into the future.

To secure the future of The Naples Players and the Sugden Community Theatre for generations to come, we hope to achieve an endowment fund of $10 million. Today, we are more than half way there! With your continued support, as well as your advice and suggestions, we hope to reach our goal within the next five years.

Please, consider The Naples Players in your financial planning. Talk to your financial advisors and to John Sorey, Executive Director of The Naples Players, at 239-434-7340 ext. 15. A gift to The Naples Players Endowment Fund may provide you and your estate with many tax and financial benefits, and certainly will help secure our future. Everyone benefits.

He has workedprofessionally stateside and internationally, participating in all forms of theatre ranging from opera and musicals, to new and experimental plays. DAVID VARISCO, Co-Head Usher, moved from Wood Dale, Ill., to Naples, Florida, seven years ago with his wife and daughter. He and his wife also have two sons who still reside in the suburbs of Chicago. David works for Artis-Naples in the Safety/Security Department.

CRAIG WALCK, Production Manager, returned to TNP after a brief five-year sabbatical, during which he worked for Columbia University, The All Stars Project, and various other theatrical groups

in New York City, as well as The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, where he oversaw the completion of construction, opening, and first two years of operation of the Miramar Cultural Center, in Miramar, Fla. Originally from Niagara Falls, N.Y., he once again calls Naples home, with his wife, Jessica, and their kids (dogs), Ziggy & Twoey.

JESSICA WALCK, Asst to Artistic Director, has always found herself in a theatre in one role or another. Here at TNP, Jessica has been very active on and off stage and has worked with the KidzAct program since 2006. She enjoys wearing many hats and learning from this tremendously talented staff. This season she looks forward to stepping into the director’s chair for Love, Loss and What I Wore.

MARY WALLACE, Costume Shop Supervisor, has been involved in theatre since grade school and she has been sewing even longer. After graduating with a degree in theatre, she honed her sewing and design skills making clothes for family and friends. The Naples Players offers her the opportunity to again combine two of her great loves.

KidzAct, Youth Theatre of the Naples Players

KidzAct, the youth education program of The Naples Players, is now in its thirteenth year. From its modest beginning as an after school program, it now reaches thousands of children, families and members of the community with multiple productions, showcases, and outreach programs that have brought the joy of live theatre to all who attend and participate. Committed to never turning away a student for want of funds, KidzAct gives away more than $25,000 in scholarships annually.

KidzAct programs are offered year round in three sessions: Summer Session, Fall Session, and Winter/Spring Session. For our younger students, we offer six levels of skill/showcase classes which include instruction in singing, dancing and acting, as well as theatre etiquette. A gifted and talented program challenges our teens to expand their horizons in song, dance and particularly acting. KidzAct production classes present six full productions for our more advanced students, ranging from theatre for young audiences, to teen musicals, to “Shakespeare on the Plaza.”

Our outreach program sends staff to help area schools realize their own productions. Due to our generous benefactors and grant donors, we will continue to partner with schools this season to reach hundreds of enthusiastic performers and audiences.

The Nutcracker Goes Pop!, our holiday extravaganza, will be presented on the Blackburn stage in December. With more new tunes and new solos, it offers all our students opportunities to move up through the show with new challenges

each year. The levels focus extensive work in dance and singing as this is an entirely musical piece. The benefit of this program could be seen

in the shows we presented over the last few months. For those of you who may not have seen it, it is a modern telling of the cherished holiday classic in a musical theatre style. Our big spring musical will also be on the Blackburn stage in May and our dramatic talent will impress you on the Baker Stage in April in “Shakespeare on the Plaza.”

The dedication of KidzAct teachers, The Naples Players staff, and countless volunteers keep KidzAct expanding in thrilling ways. Our KidzAct instructors are knowledgeable, caring, energetic and committed to broadening each student’s theatrical horizon. I am proud to work with them all.

We are able to keep these programs running with generous grants from Target, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, the Martin Foundation and all our private donors. To find out more about KidzAct or how you can help, call 434-7340, ext. 39.

Volunteer

Audition, volunteer, take classes—at The Naples Players you can do it all, and there’s no better time than now to get started.

Audition notices are posted on our website, www.naplesplayers.org. Click on “Get Involved” and then select shows or general information. You’ll find brief descriptions of the plays and musicals, a cast breakdown with the number of actors and age ranges; and dates for auditions, rehearsals and performances. You’ll also find, what those in the “biz” call, sides. Sides are excerpts specifically selected by the director to see how a person auditions and takes direction. Additionally it’s a good idea to read the script before auditions. Scripts are available at the box office for a $20 refundable deposit. Shows are not pre-cast. Everyone has to have a first time. There’s no time like now to get started.

Volunteer in one (or more!) of our forty theatrical jobs. What, you don’t have theatrical experience? Don’t let that stop you. Many careers and hobbies have similarities that transition nicely to the stage or behind the scenes. Our volunteer pool is comprised of retirees, people in the work force and students. All have something to give and something to learn. Visit our website, www.naplesplayers.org or contact Becky Troop, Director of Volunteer Services, 239-434-7340 ext. 14. There’s no time like now to get started.

Take classes in TNP’s Adult Education program. From Sept. through May, an array of classes for adults and older teens provide instruction for all skill levels in dance, voice, and acting; plus workshops are available in technical areas such as lighting, sound or scenic design. Classes are offered at various times and days to provide the most opportunities for our members and volunteers. Classes are priced with member discounts. All instructors are highly credentialed and experienced. You won’t know if you like it until you try it. There’s no time like now to get started.

Planned Giving

– 68 –

Imagine the future

One of the most effective and lasting ways to help The Naples Players is through planned giving. By making a charitable gift through your estate, you are ensuring that The Naples Players will continue to delight our community with meaningful stories, unforgettable

characters and lively entertainment long into the future. Whether you have been a part of our story since 1953 or recently joined us, your passion for The Naples Players is all you need to start planning your gift.

There are many charitable planned giving options available to you by naming TNP as a beneficiary of your will, living trust, life insurance policy or retirement plan. Designing your future gift to The Naples Players is easy. Here are some ways you can make a planned gift:

BequestsIncluding The Naples Players in your will or trust is among the easiest and most effective way to support the organization. A bequest allows you, the Donor, to retain unlimited control of your assets during your life, and to receive a full tax deduction of the benefits donated upon death. Bequests can include a specific gift of cash, stock or as a percentage of the remainder of an estate. Here is sample language for a bequest in your will: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to The Naples Players, a nonprofit corporation organized and operating under the laws of the State of Florida, the sum of _____ to be used for the general operating of the theater (or for a particular area you wish to support such as Endowment or NON-restricted)

Retirement AssetsYou can designate TNP as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or 403 (b) and choose to donate all or part of your retirement assets to TNP. Distribution of the funds in your plan should also be clearly stated in writing and you should make your final wishes known by placing instructions in your will. Upon your death, your wishes will be carried out to donate all or a portion of the funds of your IRA, 401(k) or 403 (b) plan to TNP.

Life Insurance GiftsA gift of life insurance can allow you, the Donor, to make a more substantial contribution than would otherwise be possible. This type of gift permits you to a beneficial tax deduction. Along with the help of your attorney you can decide how much you would like to donate, and determine if you will use an old policy or simply create a new one. In addition, a charity owning a life insurance policy has the option of accessing the policy cash value with loans of withdrawals, or holding the policy for the death benefit. The gift of an existing policy is relatively “painless” to the Donor and the transfer is a simple process.

If the theatre has been a part of your and/or your family’s life, you can help continue the tradition for generations to come. Help us build an endowment to ensure the future of TNP as a strong, vibrant leader in the cultural life of the greater southwest region.

For more information regarding planned giving for The Naples Players, please contact: John Sorey at 239-434-7340 x15
