ComPetitionOur annual Fall Major Print Competi-tion is just around the corner. Why do we do this?
It is evident that we have allbeen bitten by the photography bug.
We are driven to make art. Maybe we want to preserve ascene that moves us. Perhaps we wish to record a journey,a vacation, or a family event. Possibly we love the chaos ofstreet photography or the intimacy of macro and close-up photography.
So you have captured a great photo. Now what? After the photo is made and processed, what next? Printit? Sure. Make an album? Great! Enter it into a competi-tion? Absolutely! Competitions offer a valuable opportunity for manyreasons. Among these are the personal satisfaction of see-ing our work displayed. Recognition by our peers with thepossibility of monetary rewards is definitely a plus. Theexposure is great for those who have a photographybusiness. But perhaps the most important reason is toimprove our photography by listening to the critiquesof others.
After we have put forth our best efforts to makebeautiful and meaningful photographs, hearing someonespeak critically about our photographs, saying what theylike and don’t like, what is good and what is not so good, and suggestions for changes to improve our work, can bedifficult as well as rewarding. The key is to remainimpersonal. Listen carefully and hear the critiques with anopen mind.
Competitions prevent stagnation by forcing us topush ourselves to make better photographs. We canlearn to be original and to tell a story with a single photo-graph. Even simple things like following parameters, pho-tographing within a theme, and following instructions areimportant lessons. ““Why Competitions Are Good for Your Photography”https://www.diyphotography.net/competitions-good-photography-make/
There are, of course, many levels of photo-graphic competitions, from beginner to ama-
teur to professional; from local photo clubs to nationalor international juried competitions; from those thatsimply offer accolades to those that offer large monetaryprizes. Even our photo club’s monthly mini-comps andfield trip competitions provide learning opportunities.
But the bottom line is this: a Photography Competition offers one or two or more opinions.Remember that Art is very subjective. The only trulyimportant opinion is your own. You are making Art toplease yourself. If you are happy with your creations, then that is all that matters.
The following links to articles online offerdiffering opinions of photographic competitions andmay be of interest.

NOVEMBER PHOTO CHALLENGE:by Robbin Haigler
30 Days of Gratitude
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness oflife. It turns what we have intoenough.” -
Melody Beattie
This month’s challenge is to take one photo
each day of something that you are grateful
for. The goal is to use your photography to
stay in the present and ‘focus’ on what you are
thankful for.
You may wish to:
• take your photos with any camera/lens or
even your cell phone
• post on social media (#30daysofgratitude)• expand your photography skills
(i.e. different angles, different perspectives,
change up your aperture, try out new
flash skills)
• be as creative as you want (or not)
• take photos of any subject meaningful to
you
I encourage you to not overthink the process
and participate in the journey. If you need
help getting started, here is one of many items
found online to get your juices flowing:

by Robbin Haigler
Our October overnight trip to the Outer Banks was attended
by only three club members (Glynn Pullen, Ken and Robbin
Haigler). The evening weather was not expecting to be ideal
for our intended Milky Way photo at Bodie Lighthouse
but it was a nice afternoon to photograph. Ken and I spent
the afternoon in Duck discovering and exploring the Town,
Boardwalk and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. We had din-
ner at our intended dinner location (and apparently a fa-
vorite hangout for locals) the Fish Head Bar and Grill. It was
an enjoyable meal out on the pier. We then met up with
Glynn at Bodie Lighthouse for sunset photos there in antici-
pation that the clouds would blow away allowing us to cap-
ture the Milky Way. Well that didn't happen so it was an
early evening with hopes for a better sunrise at Jeannette's
Pier. Weather cooperated a little better Saturday morning
and it was nice to be almost alone on the beach as we waited
for sunrise. Not the best conditions for our intended itinerary
but still an enjoyable trip, making the best of what the
weather offered us.
