“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a unique calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service.” – Oprah Winfrey

Personal Vision

A personal vision statement "paints a picture" of the ideal future you will create. It is about defining what you love, what you value, who you aspire to be and what you want to make happen. It is a bridge that leads you to your personal mission, your best self, best work and best legacy. In crafting your personal vision, first, get to know what you love and value the most. Here are a few questions to get you started thinking about your personal vision.

1. What are your five or six most important values (see personal values worksheet)? 2. What are the ten things you most enjoy doing? Be honest. These are the ten things without

which your days, weeks, months, and years would feel incomplete. 3. If you never had to work another day in your life, how would you spend your time instead of

working? 4. When your life is ending, what will you regret not doing, seeing, or achieving? 5. What strengths have other people identified in you and your accomplishments? What strengths

do you see in yourself? Now put yourself in your ideal future and consider these questions:

1. What are you grateful for? 2. What have you created? 3. What will be your legacy? 4. What are your biggest accomplishments? 5. What three adjectives would you use to describe yourself?

Mission Statement

If your vision statement paints the picture of the future you want to see for yourself and the world, your mission statement describes what you want now and how you will achieve your long term aspiration. It talks about the present leading to the future and how you will get to where you want to be. It answers the questions of; “What do I do?”; “How do I do it?”, “Who do I do it for?”, “What makes me different”, and “What is the benefit?”

Creating a Personal Mission Statement will be, without question, one of the most powerful and significant things you will ever do for your leadership. A personal mission statement provides clarity and gives you a sense of purpose and a guiding light for your future goals and decisions. Creating a mission statement is not something you do overnight. It takes deep introspection, careful analysis, thoughtful expression, and often many rewrites to produce it in its final form. It may take you several weeks or even months before you feel really comfortable with your mission statement, before you feel it is a complete and concise expression of your innermost values and directions. Even then, you will want to review it regularly and make minor changes as the years bring additional insights or changing circumstances. Building upon insight you’ve gained from the process of developing your vision statement, here are some questions that can help you draft your personal mission statement: 1. How do I best serve others and the world?

2. What is my unique gift/talent that I want to use primarily?

3. What kind of work do I want do? What is my ideal typical day?

4. Who do I want to work with and for?

5. How do I want to feel about my relationships?

Putting Your Personal Vision and Mission into Action Now it’s time to test-drive your personal Vision and Mission. As you work through developing your statements, here are some questions to put your vision and mission into action and determine if it requires any fine-tuning:

• How will I know that I am putting this into practice? • What do I need to start doing now to be where I want to be tomorrow? • What behaviours will demonstrate that I am living up to my mission? • What strategies and skills are required to move it forward? • When I am living my mission, what will people say about me? • Who can provide support/accountability? • What daily/weekly/monthly/annual practices will I commit to?

You can use this table to capture your ideas:
