SCHOOL ROCKS! – MY SCHOOL – MAY 2012
3
Dear Readers,
“My School” is happy to share with you this very special moment –
the issuing of our first school magazine in English. It is named “School
Rocks!” - title which has obtained the largest number of votes given by our
students in our school survey to establish this important aspect – the
magazine’s “identity”. Thus, we have gladly accepted our students’ choice
together with all their trust and enthusiasm.
The magazine is structured in three main sections entitled “News,
Events and Trends”, “Creative Writing” and “Laughter Zone” which are
meant to keep you informed with what is going on inside and outside of
our school, to give our students the chance to express their most creative
ideas, to put a smile on your face as the study of English language contains
many funny aspects as well.
Hoping that “School Rocks!” will “rock” your general knowledge, your
sensibility and your personal humor, I personally rely on your support and
understanding in wishing “School Rocks!” a very prosperous and long
existence!

MY SCHOOL RECOMMENDS
THE TRINITY EXAM
by Dana Nicorici
This is the second year in a row when My School organizes the Trinity
Exam. Our students got very good results and we are now looking forward to
obtaining even better results and to having yet again the pleasant experience of
an international examination.
Trinity College of London has been examining since 1872 and now, over
half a million people each day take one of the examinations. The Graded
Examinations in Spoken English (GESE) are designed for all learners of English.
There are 12 grades in total and each examination is conducted in person by a
Trinity examiner. They are all highly-trained and experienced native speakers of
SCHOOL ROCKS! – MY SCHOOL – MAY 2012
5
English, who travel from the UK, to meet our students. The exam consists of an
unscripted one-to-one conversation with the examiner (held in a designated
examination room) during which the students demonstrate that they can
communicate in English. The exams encourage students to develop and
progress by acknowledging each step forward; at every stage of the student's
development there is a chance to mark success.
There are four stages with three grades at each stage: Initial (Grades 1-3),
Elementary (Grades 4-6), Intermediate (Grades 7-9), Advanced (Grades 10-12).
With 12 grades available, there is a grade to suit every candidate. The number
of tasks depends on the level at which students enter the examination. It's the
examiner's job to put candidates at their ease and give them the opportunity to
demonstrate their ability to communicate in English.
The assessment is a balance between fluency and accuracy. Examiners
are interested in finding out what candidates can really do. Good luck to all
future candidates!

MY SCHOOL – A SUCCESSFUL LEARNING CENTRE
FOR CAMBRIDGE EXAMINATIONS
by Ciprian – Petre Bibic
MY School – in cooperation with The University of Cambridge ESOL
Examinations and The British Council of Bucharest – has become a successful
Learning Centre and, for the moment, the following Cambridge examinations
can be taken here: YLE – Young Learners Exams (Starters, Movers, Flyers),
KET – Key English Test, PET – Preliminary English Test, FCE – First Certificate
in English since 2010.
On 3rd April 2012 My School has held the YLE Exams for primary school
students: Starters – 2nd grade students, Movers – 3rd grade students and Flyers
– 4th grade students. All exam levels consist of three main parts (reading and
writing, listening, speaking) and they correspond to the International language
SCHOOL ROCKS! – MY SCHOOL – MAY 2012
6
recognition levels A1 (Starters and Movers) and A2 (Flyers). In addition, very
important aspect about all YLE exams is that all candidates can pass by
obtaining from minimum 3 to maximum15 “Shields” (5 for each part of the test)
printed on their diplomas. We are looking forward to receiving the YLE results!
KET, PET and FCE exams (for schools) will take place in My School on 2nd June
2012 for the secondary school students: KET – 5th grade students, PET – 6th
grade students and FCE – 7th/8th grade students. KET (A2+ level) and PET (B1
level) have a similar structure of three parts (reading and writing, listening,
speaking), whereas the FCE exams has got a more complex structure which
consists of 5 parts (reading, writing, listening, use of English, speaking) and
corresponds to B2 International language recognition level. While students can
pass KET and PET exams with the results PASS WITH MERIT and PASS, they
can pass FCE with A (maximum), B (medium) or C (minimum) admission marks.
In order to do their best within these exams, our both primary and secondary
school students have been carefully and efficiently instructed by the members of
our English Teaching Department: Dana Nicorici, Andreea Uzuna and Ciprian –
Petre Bibic.
Good luck to all our candidates!
Spelling Bee by Andreea Uzuna
Spelling bee is a competition where contestants, usually children, are asked
to spell English words. The concept is thought to have originated in the United States, and
spelling bee events are now held in many countries around the world, even in our school
along with variants that require the memorization of a specific text or words.
Historically the word bee has been used to describe a get-together where a specific action is
being carried out, like a husking bee, a quilting bee, or an apple bee. Its etymology is unclear
SCHOOL ROCKS! – MY SCHOOL – MAY 2012
7
but possibly derived from the Old English word bēn for prayer. Spelling bee students usually
start competition in elementary schools (primary schools) or middle schools. Classes compete
against other classes or students compete against other students in the same grade, or level,
and the winning class or the winner is determined by the score of each class.
This year the competition will be held by the end of May. Having the last year experience, we
hope our students will look forward to competing again at the end of this school year! Good
luck!
Spelling Bee Rules 1. Your teacher gives you a word. 2. You have to pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it. 3. Within 20 seconds, you may ask the teacher to say the word again or use it in a sentence. 4. You may be disqualified if you ignore a request to start spelling. 5. After starting to spell a word, you may stop and start over with NO change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced. 6. If letters or their sequence is changed in the respelling, you will be eliminated. 7. Any speller who fails to spell correctly the word she/he is given is eliminated in that round and from the contest. 8. Each speller who has not been eliminated in the previous round continues and is given the chance to spell one word. If the spelling is not correct, that contestant is eliminated. In this way the bee continues until only two spellers are standing. 9. When only two contestants remain in the contest they must eliminate each other. If the first contestant cannot spell the word, then the second one tries. If s/he is correct s/he is given the next word. If s/he spells that correctly s/he is the winner. If he fails to spell the first word correctly, the first contestant is given a new word. The winner is the person who spells two words correctly. 10. This is the most important rule of all. Please have fun and relax.

A DIFFERENT SCHOOL
by Dana Nicorici
The ‘’Different School’’
program had its debut this school
year, between April 2nd and April 6th
and it unfolded in every primary and
secondary school in our country. The
timetable had a special format and it
only included non-formal activities.
Our school made sure our students
had a great time during this week.
This is how it all started:
We went to De Gustibus
restaurant and made a delicious
cheese cake and fruit salad. Our
students had the chance of being
cooks and of getting top advice from
professional chefs. As the weather
was lovely, we also strolled down
Herastrau Park, had fun playing
football and volleyball, running and
jumping all around. We didn’t forget
about our planet either and we made
lots of projects dedicated to the
U4Energy day.
As we were inspired and in a
creative mood, we also wrote
inspirational messages, made
badges, had a special guest (Andra
Matzal) that taught us how to think
outside the box and watched
inspirational videos about teenagers.
We had a great quiz contest and the
prizes were great: books, calendars
and posters. The week ended on a
great note: with a great pajama
party. We ate popcorn, watched
movies, talked about all sorts of
interesting things and the ending
was amazing: two full hours of
karaoke, together with our dear
teachers.
Take a look at the pictures we
have from this week and you will see
how much fun we had. We are
looking forward to next year and to
the great activities that will make us
love our school and teachers even
more. That was our chance to get to
know them better and to see them in
a different light. And we loved every
moment of it!

My Teaching
Experience at MY SCHOOL
by Jonathan DeSeno
Try to imagine the following being
your new job description. Welcome to the USA! Your mission: teach Romanian to around 250 children ages 1 and a half to 14 years old weekly. Besides the normal challenges of teaching children and living in another culture, add to it that you are not allowed to speak to the children in English. This mission is not imaginary. Change a few of the details and you have my challenging and wonderful job here at My School and My Kindergarten.
Challenges aside this has been a great year here. I think I am the envy of many. Friends and family often ask me how my job is going in Romania. I sarcastically answer them, by telling them how hard it is. When I get to school I can hardly walk through the halls because of children holding onto my legs and telling me they love me etc. The students are great. They really seem to have an appreciation of English, and love talking, learning, and playing in it. The diversity of the different personalities and ages makes working here great. In the same day, I could be singing children’s songs like “Head and shoulders, knees, and toes”, and later on discussing a work of Shakespeare with my older students. I am grateful to God for this opportunity to teach here at the My School System. It is not only a job, but a great joy in my life.
Another great thing about working here for the My School System, has been the staff. I have been in many, many schools here in Bucharest and Romania, and I can attest that the discipline and order with which the teachers conduct their classes is exemplary for Romania. Somehow they are able to find a wonderful balance between order and making learning fun. I really admire my colleges, and have learned so much from them. They have been so patient and helpful as I face cultural challenges, even taking special time to help me understand how to best work with their classes. It has been great. No curriculum can replace them.
Lastly I am grateful for the directors and secretaries of the My School System. They are super stressed and busy at times, but have found time to help me fit in and improve the learning experience for my students. Not only have they been willing to talk, but they have “put their money where their mouth is” as they have invested and purchased many books and other resources that have made teaching here more effective and fun.
Thank you students, parents, teachers, and staff for a great experience at My School and My Kindergarten. I look forward to next year.

Good-Bye my friends!
As we’ve been through a lot…I can’t tell you all that has happened. I, as well as some classmates, am in this school since I was 2 years old. We’ve been through both bad and nice events, but it is better to keep in mind the nice ones only.
Our story here has come to an end and we should say good-bye to our friends and teachers that were our guides for so long.
It’s been only four years
But look how far we’ve come
We’re older, and we’re wiser.
It’s been anything but easy
But still, in the end
I consider myself lucky
To know you as my friends.
It‘s been great and I will miss you all! Every good-bye makes the next hello closer.
Sabrina Crainiceanu-Rotaru- 8TH Grade
My history at My School
I have been a student here for 4 years, from the 5th grade till the 8th, and it was more or less of an
exciting journey. In the 5th grade it was very easy to make friends as everyone from my class is
easygoing. Also this 5th grade brought me a new adventure: my first end of semester exam at
Romanian and Maths. I also developed a sporting spirit playing a lot of football.
In the sixth grade I already got comfortable with the secondary school and with some new changes
that brought our awesome Maths teacher. Although I gained that sporting spirit in the 5th grade, it
was easily cut down by not playing football at all in the sixth as the court was used by the 4th grade
then to play silly games.
For me the 7th grade was the hardest year of study to get on with as this reflected on my grades but
SCHOOL ROCKS! – MY SCHOOL – MAY 2012
14
it had been definitely been the best year socially and actively alike as that sporting spirit I keep on
talking about came back more powerful than. This year I also took the FCE Cambridge exam which
means a lot for me. Now, in the eighth grade, the pressure is higher than ever but I think I am
coping well with it as the grades went higher than last year and my social life and sporting life
remained the same.
My School gave me a lot to cheer for as well as things to think on about me and for this I am
thankful

‘’The pig started crying. The other pig wanted to build a house, too, but when he knew what
happened, he didn’t want to build a house of straws and he said: I’ll build a house made of bricks!
He started making that house. After he finished it, he called his brothers to his home. When one of
his brothers started laughing at his house, it started to shake. After it shook for two or three
minutes, it stopped, but after that, the house was demolished. All the three pigs died.’’
MARIA DICA, 4C
‘’The big pig ran to the middle house and took his hand and went to his youngest brother. ‘’I
brought you here because the wolf is coming! said the biggest one. ‘’Ok! Let’s make a fire. Maybe
the wolf will climb the house and then jump on the pipes. ‘’That’s a very good idea!’’
The wolf climbed the house and jumped on the pipes, in the fire. The wolf agency was mad because
they lost their favorite agent. They decided to put a baby wolf at the pigs’ house. They cannot let a
baby outside. The pigs took the baby wolf inside. They decided to call him Lucky. He had a very nice
childhood. He went to Pigs School, had a lot of friends, toys and good food. Lucky became a
teenager and went to the wolf agency and told them where the key from the pigs’ house was. The
wolves came to the pigs and wanted to eat them, but Lucky came to the wolves and told them the
pigs and the wolves should be friends and live in harmony and peace. The chief of the wolves told
them to stop the war. Lucky was adopted by the pig and the wolves. Lucky is very LUCKY!

THE TRAPDOOR
TITI CONG, 4C
…spooky. There was nothing, just darkness and the wind. No plants, no life. Their dad had a bag. First, with a small knife, he hit the wall for a sample, because he had a friend that was an archaeologist and he knew when the wall was made. Suddenly, the stair stopped and they saw a Mayan temple, with a 4000 year old treasure. They took it, but mysteriously, the temple started burning. Liz and Erik ran up the stairs, but their Mom died in the flames and their dad was trapped inside, because the door closed automatically and, in this way, both parents died.
THE END
RAZVAN PINTEA, 4C
…scary. They went down and they saw a lot of guns in there and there were AK-47. The family was
afraid but they didn’t give up. Liz and Erik were very scared. They entered a big room. There were
aliens which had bombs on them. They exploded, but the glass protected the family, because there
was a special glass. They went up and they never went down. They lived happily ever after and their
dad was playing with the toy chicken.

‘’Who are you? said dad. And…what do you want?
‘’I want to help you find the treasure. Or you’ll end up like those skulls over there! They are my cousins. And you are the protectors.
‘’Ok! said Mom.
‘’Let’s find the treasure! they all said at the same time.
‘’The ghost helped them find the treasure. When they opened the box, they found a bunch of old empty plastic bottles and other garbage.
‘’If this is full of garbage…what kind of protectors are we? said mom.

gave it to their family because they were poor. Then, on the third day, she opened the third drawer
and saw a nice brush and after a while, she discovered that the brush was magical. She wanted a

thought about that and she used all her drawers. But she was happy to have her stuff!’’

The Mystery of the Golden Skull
It was a dark night and the old house was completely quiet.
Suddenly, a voice started to whisper. He said that if we didn’t leave
the house, we would be zombies. I was staying with my friend,
Daniel. He was very scared so we stared to run and we ran and ran
for 30 minutes. Daniel got tired so we had a short break to
breathe. We realized that we had a big problem because we didn’t
know where the door was. I finally found a golden skull but when I wanted to have a look a phantom
jumped in front of me and said, ’Give me the skull and I will show you the door.’ Without thinking
twice, I gave him the skull and he showed us the door. It was a very scary night.
Ioana Vallimarescu, 4A
The Lazania Kid
It was a very dark night and the old house was completely quiet. Suddenly, someone knocked at the
door and when I came to open, there were two children. They said that they would be babysitters for
my baby. Then I turned back and the children ran away. That night I really needed a babysitter so I ran
after to catch them. Being in a hurry, I forgot my door open and the baby was sleeping in his bed. I ran
and ran but without hope. Finally, I came back home very disappointed. When I entered the main
door, I saw two boys sitting at the round table in the dining room, eating something. But what was
that? I asked them who they were and what they were doing and the only thing they said was that the
baby was ok. They even said that the meal was great and when I looked more attentively I saw that

they were eating a lazania baby. I was so puzzled that I fainted. That day was a terrible one. In fact, I
had a bad dream.

A Ghost in the House
It was a very dark night and the old house was completely quiet. Suddenly, I saw a ghost of a girl. The
girl had blonde hair and a very white face. He said, ‘I want your spirit or I will kill you!’
Being very scared I screamed, ‘No, ghost!!!’ ‘Ok, I will kill you and I’ll take the spirit out of your body.’ I
took a knife and fought with the phantom and it fought me back. Luckily I took a piece of garlic and I
showed the ghost what I had in my hand. That moment it disappeared. I was very relieved.

The Scary Night
It was a very dark night and the old house was completely quiet. Rebecca was staying at her cousin,
Andreea, in Austria and she was having fun.
On the last day of her holiday, Rebecca’s cousin took her to see the museum around. She was very
excited because she was about to see new interesting things inside the museum. When they entered
the door, they heard a scary noise. Andreea said that it was the noise of a plane but Rebecca said that
there was a ghost haunting the main hall of the museum. She got scared but she didn’t say anything.
She simply wanted to go outside. After a while, trying to find the way out, they saw Andreea’s father
who was working in that museum. He saw the worried girls and he scared them, pretending to be a
ghost. It was a funny and scary day!

The Mystery of the Horror Japanese Temple
Clara and her giant turtle were looking for an ancient thing for her history test. She was so excited
because her dream was to become a famous explorer. She expected she could find some bones, a

the foot of the mountains, a place which was abandoned, wild and far away from her house. The view
was spectacular and Clara started to dig in the ground. He turtle was still looking at the horizon when

they both saw an old temple. Clara wanted to go there but she was a little scared. When she
remembered she would like to be an explorer, she decided that they should give it a try.
After walking for one hour, they arrived outside the building. Several minutes later, she heard some
steps behind but she couldn’t see anyone. It was definitely a mysterious place. Nobody lived there,
nobody was around at that time. She hoped she would find a piece of old thing to show everybody in
her class, but she woke up. She wished she hadn’t woken up so early. Tonight, she would find the
skull!

A Ghost in the House
It was a very dark night and the old house was completely quiet. Suddenly, I heard a knock. My
mother told me one day later that if someone knocked or cried at my door and I didn’t know that
person, I mustn’t answer. That knock really scared me because it was midnight and I didn’t expect
anyone to be awake. First, I tried to ignore that knock and to go to
bed but I was again disturbed by the same noise. I
wanted to open the door but I didn’t dare so I
remained in bed. After a few seconds, I heard
some screams which were loader and loader. I started
to sweat out of fear. Some people were outside screaming to
some witches, ‘Please, don’t kill us!’ That really scared me so I
went to the hall and searched from the windows. To my surprise,
no one was there. I took a knife and I got outside. It was a cold
night and I was freezing. I heard some guns and I thought
someone was trying to hit me, so I fainted. After one hour,
when I got again on my feet, I stood motionless for ten
minutes because I was so scared. I heard those
screams and new steps again and again. I hid in the
nearest tree and I waited. Nobody was there. I got
back in the house and I tried to find my parents but they
weren’t there. I got nervous because I thought that the witches had killed my father. I searched and I
found a bazooka, a mini gun, a shotgun and a sniper in the fridge. I took the guns and went out.
Outside the house there were about 450 robots, some monsters, witches and zombies. I screamed
and losing my mind I tried to use my weapons. I killed 449 witches. The big witch was standing in front
of me so I ran towards her and I fought with her. She broke my left leg and my arms but I finally
destroyed her. I knew I could save the world so everybody considered me a superhero.

History Repeats Itself
Sonia was a fourteen year old girl, living in Orlando, a small village.
Her father was part of the city council, so he was always busy. She
could see him only two times a week. It was Tuesday. After Sonia woke up,
she went to the kitchen to grab her breakfast. The TV was turned on and
she could hear the local news lady's
voice, speaking of the unexpected disappearance of two council
members, some friends of her father. She tried not to seem worried in front
of her mom. She went upstairs, dressed for school and rushed to her
grandmother's house. She wanted to ask Nana more about the
disappearance, but she couldn't find her at her house.
The next day Sonia got a call from her grandmother who said that
she should look out the door because she sent her a package. It was a
book, a diary about year 1902. Sonia
read the diary that night and she was terrified. In 1902 two men from the
city council were kidnapped the same day as the father's friends. She knew
the person who did this will come for her father eventually. But no, it
wasn't possible. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
The next month, another member of the council disappeared. She was
scared but decided to tell nobody about the diary.
That week, one night, she heard some steps near her bedroom.
She got out of the bed and started crying as she could see her parents
being threatened by the person she
thought kidnapped her father's friends.
The person took them, her family, to an old barn far away from
Orlando. Sonia found out that the "criminal" was a descendant of the
person who kidnapped two council members back in 1902. He wanted to
take revenge on the council members, for his ancestors.
Sonia tried to talk to him and eventually succeeded. She convinced
him to just let all the hate and anger go away and release the hostages.
After all, "the criminal" turned himself
in to the police for attempted murder. Sonia became the hero of the village.
She agreed to attend a press conference and talk about the
incident. The crowd of people were applauding ad she started talking: "It
had definitely been a horrifying experience and I was lucky to be

P A R T I E S
Do you like parties? Parties are special moments when you meet your friends and other people. Parties can often take place in discos or at playgrounds, even at your house. At parties you eat cake and a lot of sweets. That’s why children love them. You are not allowed to go at the party if you aren’t invited. If it’s a birthday party, you should bring a present to the person who celebrates his birthday.
There are lots of different types of parties: swap parties, Halloween parties, beach parties, ice cream parties. At parties you should wear casual clothes. Don’t go to a party dressed in sports clothes. If you dress like that to a party you don’t respect the person that invited you at his party.
I really like parties!!!!!!!!

Underwater
Don’t you ever wonder what’s lying underneath the perfect blue waves that always end up crushing on the sand? I do.
In just a second it all flashes before my eyes, beauty on the outside, a beast on the inside and somewhere in the middle, a mystery that not even the great Sherlock Holmes will ever resolve. A book with an infinity of pages full of secrets that lie underneath our eyes but we are so “blind” we will never be able to see them. The first word that pops up in your mind after reading this is “the sea” isn’t it?… well how about “The World we live in”?
How much do we know? How much do we think we know? What are we really made of? Does God really exist? Will the world end in 2012? Are we the only species populating this space?... And I can continue like that for hours but that is not the point of our story. The main idea is that we live in a world full of lies, liars, and people who are lied to. We have so many questions without answers, so many secrets that end up destroying us. We live in a world of which we know almost NOTHING about.
Underneath the perfect blue waves, there lies a world which needs to be discovered, a world that’s as old as the sea, but underwater lie the mysteries “she” keeps inside since the beginning of humanity.

LAUGHTER ZONE
A little girl came home from school and said to her mother, "Mommy, today in
school I was punished for something that I didn't do." The mother exclaimed, "But
that's terrible! I'm going to have a talk with your teacher about this ... by the way,
what was it that you didn't do?" The little girl replied, "My homework."
Teacher : What are you doing, crawling into school ten minutes late ?
Pupil : Well, you told me never to walk into school ten minutes late !
A professor was giving a big test one day to his students. He handed out all of the
tests and went back to his desk to wait. Once the test was over, the students all
handed the tests back in. The professor noticed that one of the students had
attached a $100 bill to his test with a note saying "A dollar per point." The next
class the professor handed the tests back out. This student got back his test and
$56 change.
The teacher came up with a good problem. "Suppose," she asked the second-
graders, "there were a dozen sheep and six of them jumped over a fence. How many
would be left?" "None," answered little Norman. "None? Norman, you don't know
your arithmetic." "Teacher, you don't know your sheep. When one goes, they all
go!"
