my philosophy of education

My Philosophy of Education Jared Hubicsak Ed 150 W 1:10
My philosophy of education is how I believe education should work and its purpose in a
student’s life. The purpose of education, in my opinion, is to develop the knowledge, skills, and the
character of the student so that they are able to grow as a person. As a future educator, I feel that my
job is to ensure that kids are prepared for the real world. Educators need to give students facts and
ideas so that they are able to know how to succeed in a professional setting. As Ayn Rand quoted, “The
only purpose of education is to teach a student how to live his life by developing his mind and equipping
him to deal with reality. He has to be taught to think, to understand, to integrate, to prove. He has to be
taught the essentials of the knowledge discovered in the past-and he has to be equipped to acquire
further knowledge by his own effort.” I feel that the purpose of getting an education is to advance that
learning of new skills and knowledge and at the same time develop their overall attitude and character
so that they can become a better person.
I feel that education should influence both the intelligence and social aspects of a student’s
development. When a student goes to school, I feel that he needs to increase his social and educational
knowledge. As a result of thirteen years of schooling, I feel a student needs to be a more intelligent
person by knowing all the facts necessary to survive in this world; however, they must also know how to
be socially involved as well. Without a social life, students are not able to have friends which are a
significant aspect of being able to successfully gain an education. It is extremely important for a student
to have a support system of friends and family. I know I have had times when I have received a bad
grade in school and without my friends there to provide me with support, I would have missed part of
my valuable education that I have today. Gaining a social life in my mind is definitely a part of the
purpose of education.
I feel that as educators, we are preparing students for the real world. In an education, a student
should learn the basic skills on how to succeed in the future. As a future teacher, I need to know how to
relate these essential skills to my students. As I mentioned above, I feel that social aspects definitely

need to be considered. Without social aspects present, I feel that a student’s education would be lacking
one of the most important parts of reaching his potential. The individual student is very important, but
at the same time so is the group’s success. We need to address education for individuals; however, I
strongly believe that the individual and group are equally important. Teachers need to make sure that
the group as a whole understands the topic and not just select individuals before moving on to a new
topic. The group’s success is how we measure our success as a teacher in the classroom, but in order to
get the group to succeed, we must first look at each individual.
I believe that knowledge has a big deal to do with education. Students need knowledge in a
variety of areas in order to get the best education possible. For instance, I thought I was not getting a
good enough education through middle school because they were only teaching me the basic subjects
like English and Math. However, I feel that high school broadened my education greatly because I
expanded my educational horizons through Tech Skills class and other practical skills. A student’s
experiences in education earlier in life are important because these experiences will be remembered
and reflected on for a longer time in life. I still look back on my elementary school days when I had so
much fun doing different activities such as Math Masters and Karate Reading. I can reflect on these
instances by looking back and seeing how much they have influenced my life today.
I believe that the role of the teacher should be to guide and advise his or her students, since the
students will choose which information interests them and that they will utilize later in life. This is the
Progressivism view of education, which claims that your education is the preparation for life. In my
opinion, I think that the teacher should also be actively involved in the community because they will be
even more influential on their students. I know I looked up to my teachers when I was younger, and
when I saw my 8th grade teacher Mr. Brown helping out in the community, it gave me a more positive
image of him. A teacher needs to branch out and be connected to the community by extending their
influence and knowledge outside the classroom. As far as the teacher’s role in educational renewal and

reform, I feel that teachers need to keep renewing education in parts of the world that are lacking it
right now. In countries in Africa and other developing nations we need teachers to provide the role of
being there to improve the school systems. There are many areas of the world that need reform, and we
need teachers to provide their knowledge, skills, and disposition to these areas so students are able to
fulfill their education.
To conclude, I feel I can vividly compare my philosophy of education to my career in sports.
From the time I began my education, I also started to play sports. I did not know much but only knew
the basics. Going through middle school, I began to learn more knowledge like math facts and
comprehension in reading while in sports I began to learn some of the tricks of the trade including the
correct form on how to pass a soccer ball. Finally as a high school graduate, I know a plethora of
information inside and outside the classroom as well as developing even further as an athlete (I won a
state championship in soccer my senior year of high school). Just like I believe that an education should
develop your skills, knowledge, and character, I also think that my growth in sports has shown the same
development. I have gained the skills on how to improve my game by adding extra dimensions like spin
in tennis or correct form in soccer. I have gained the knowledge on how an opponent will attack you so
you can be ready for them and consequently win the game. Also I have developed my character by
meeting new people and having a very successful social life. The only difference between my belief of
education and my sports is that there are times in sports to stop and rest, but I believe that the purpose
of education is to have a continued learning experience with no stops in the path.
