FOOD: We often find that diet is a major player in the cause of itching in dogs. Cheap supermarket foods, bulk produce store foods, and cereal based foods can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. The signs of an allergy usually begin with itchy skin, redness or pimples. This can quickly turn into serious skin conditions if left untreated. Dogs are commonly allergic to beef or chicken because of the additives in producing these meats (i.e.. Steroids, antibiotics and grain fed livestock).

SOLUTIONS: You have to be a little bit careful when changing a dog's diet, especially a sensitive one. Firstly you ELIMINATE. If they are having beef or chicken, change to a fish based or lamb based dry food. We would suggest:

WASHING: Another common mistake people make is to use a Tea Tree based or eucalyptus shampoo at the first sign of itchy dogs. These products are fantastic to be used as antiseptics but for an itchy or sensitive dog they can exacurbate the condition. They are very strong and irritate the already sore, dry and itchy skin. Never use Wool Wash or Baby Shampoo or any human shampoo on your dog...they have a completely different PH balance skin to humans. SOLUTIONS: For sensitive, dry coats an oatmeal based shampoo will often remedy the problem. Using a good quality pet shampoo suited to the dog's individual problem is the quickest way to resolve things. For dry and itchy (with dandruff sometimes) we would suggest using the following:

FLEA CONTROL: Under use of monthly flea and tick products is a prime reason for itching. Some dogs are so allergic to flea bites that it only takes one bite to start off the allergic reaction which often turns to a full blown flea allergy which then requires vet treatment. Flea control spot ons must be used as directed, not just during the summer months or when you might think your dog has a flea. Also, many times, people treat the dogs but not the cats in the house and the cat can carry fleas into the environment and then they jump right onto the dog. Also, some of the monthly "chews" for fleas don't actually kill the ADULT fleas ..just break the cycle..so unless you use another "one off kill" treatment if a flea is found...the adult flea can then bite the dog and begin the allergic reaction which "once more" can turn to full blown flea allergy dermatitis. Another point is that the environment needs treating if there is a flea infestation...flea bombs, kennel sprays and other products are available to treat yards, sandy areas and carpet.

Page 13: My Itchy Dog

SOLUTIONS: If your dog has a severe flea allergy and as long as he is not epileptic or has had siezures then Comfortis or Panoramis will effectively keep all fleas at bay. This product kills all adult fleas that might jump onto him in between monthly oral doses. (Comfortis is flea only, Panoramis is flea, heartworm and worming.) Otherwise keep perfectly up to date with treatments...spot-ons can lose the effectiveness after 28 days so mark the calendar...don't just do it on the 1st of each month as this stretches the doses and can leave a gap with no protection. Also make sure that when applying spot-ons that you part the fur and apply directly onto the dog's skin...otherwise it might not get through the coat and reach the skin where it begins it's process. If you give your dog an oral treatment then make sure that it is on a full stomach and that he does not throw up within two hours of ingesting, otherwise you must dose him again.

BEDDING: HESSIAN SACKS OR BEDS are a common cause of skin irritations in dogs. Rough, scratchy fibres are not good for sensitive dogs. Flea eggs can stay caught in bedding too so washing at high temperatures or spraying with flea repellent is necessary. SOLUTIONS: You may be able to replace your Hessian cover with a Flea Free cover depending on the frame dimensions
