my heart is broken lyrics breakdown
TRANSCRIPT
My Heart Is Broken"
I will wander 'til the end of time, torn away from you.
I pulled away to face the pain.
I close my eyes and drift away.
Over the fear that I will never find
A way to heal my soul.
And I will wander 'til the end of time
Torn away from you.
My heart is broken
Sweet sleep, my dark angel
Deliver us from sorrow's hold
(Over my heart).
I can't go on living this way
But I can't go back the way I came
Chained to this fear that I will never find
A way to heal my soul
And I will wander 'til the end of time
Half alive without you
my heart is broken
Sweet sleep, my dark angel
Deliver us
Change - open your eyes to the light
I denied it all so long, oh so long
Say goodbye, goodbye
My heart is broken
Release me, I can't hold on
Deliver us
My heart is broken
Sweet sleep, my dark angel
Deliver us
My heart is broken
Sweet sleep, my dark angel
Deliver us from sorrow's hold
The first line of the song states how the characters narrative is about how she is broken because of maybe a break up, it makes us as the audience feel sympathetic that she is alone and longing to be with someone who doesn’t want her.
The title of the song immediately indicates the narrative of someone with a broken heart.
It’s apparent here that she has purposely distanced herself from a former lover to feel the pain of the broken relationship.
This makes the audience think, to be with the one she loves she has to be asleep in a dream or some kind of nightmare.
Here it seems tat dreaming is a way to regain the love
back she once had.
Obviously living without love isn’t an option for her and maybe suicide is
implied here.
The repetition of my heart is broken really emphasizes her actual heartache and pain over the situation.
Although longing and romanticizing about a time when she was in love, she states how she can’t go back primarily because of the emotionally and physical unstableness she is in now.
Amy in this doesn’t feel alive without this love and slightly abnormal, this shows the audience how important love is to her and how much its dramatized emphasizes the pain.
The lexical choice of ‘chained’ implies she is stuck or kind of glued to
something that isn’t really there or something that was once they’re which
no longer exists – only in the subconscious mind.
Finally she is realizing the only way to escape the constant pain she is feeling is to say goodbye and forget about her love life event. “Release me” – implies she wants to be
free and un-hooked from the imprisonment of love, despite being deeply in love she wants escapism
from the pain.
The repetition of “sleep” shows she is willing to put to sleep the one thing she adores which is her love for someone.
“My dark angel “ – shows the narrative of the story to be quite dark, the clever use is the oxymoron shows she is in two minds.
“dark “ juxtaposes with “angel” so combines good with the bad.
