my family treeThe Topic:The topic, my family tree could mean different things for different people. I started the project by trying to understand what this meant to me. I also phoned my parents and my aunts, who were more than happy to give me their suggestions. I listened to all of them and reconnected with them over their ideas for my project. I have included many of their suggestions in the outcome and would like to thank them for their time and enthusiasm.

My initial idea was to represent the genealogy. I hoped to find interesting and dramatic stories in the past, but realized very soon, that there wasn’t much drama in the family. I also learned most of my relatives had forgotten or were unsure about the past.

I furthered my concept on genealogy and added to it layers of information—such as, stories in time, strength of ties etc.

My aunts suggested that I add in some family gossip, which included who doesn’t like who and who is very close to who. My father suggested that I look at the relevance of travel in the family and how that may have contributed to better exposure and a quality life. I thought that all these ideas were interesting in revealing information about the family.

Although in my topic, my family “tree”— the word tree suggests genealogy. It was very difficult for me to get away from the genealogy diagram that I began with. However, for my audience, my class of fellow information design students and others who may choose to attend, I felt that the details of the family tree weren’t going to be relevant or meaningful.

This led me to think, that there was a need to represent my family in a novel way, yet, not taking away the genealogy data completely. For people interested in the genealogy data, I wanted to provide the possibility of reading that information too. I began with these thoughts and came up with two concepts. Both of them aim to reveal stories about the family, although the focus of the information differed. My first concept layered stories on genealogy, whereas the second, layered it on locations in time.

Exploring Visual representations of genealogy - working towards concept 1

I explored both the concepts that I began with only because I felt that both of them had equal potential. I went on to examine different ways to represent genalogies and the details of its visual representation.

Key Questions:How can I visually show marriage? How can I visually show children from a marriage? How do i show divources? How can I connect two or more people at one point in time to tell a story? How can secrets within the family really be an aspect of the design that requires the viewer to interact with the poster?

Key Information:Genealogy - relationships Stories embedded within relationships

After exploring the visualization for this concept, I decided to go ahead with concept 2. With some feedback from classmates in the studio and while keeping in mind the audience, I felt that stories are far more valuable as information as compared to personal genealogy. This made me explore ways to design concept 2.

Exploring visual ways to show movement

I looked for examples in other peoples work that succeded to do what I was struggling with. I was trying to show movement across location which embedded certain information about the location itself.

A significant part of my family stories were those of behaviours due to migration from one village to another, one city to another or one country to another.

I found some inspiring examples in Nicholas Feltrons work. So I started exploring how I could do this to show the world my family knew of and existed within.

Classroom Feedback

Encorporating classroom feedback was a very important part in my final design:

1. The metaphor of the globe outline as the world for my family, could literally become larger as their lived environments become macro.

2. Strong verticals that place a particular location in time was important for reference

3. No one’s interested in the genealogy

4. The most interesting aspect of the information is the stories, put in more stories - good or bad—many stories

In Retrospect

The topic was a pretty challenging one only because it was so personal. I had to ask questions such as, how much of personal information do I want to reveal? And if i don’t reveal that information does it make the information represented thin and superficial?

In terms of the graphics, I would have liked it to be more detailed, even the macro views of the city of Mumbai woud have revealed more information about the character of Mumbai if it contained information about the roads and the narrow streets that. There would be a contrast extablished between the lives of the family before - in the 1950’s in their villages as compared to a large city like Mumbai.

I would have also liked to represent the genealogical information differently. In the current design, one has to find the person named in the story to the person in the genealogy, which can take a considerable amount of time. If I could visually connect them, then not only would finding them be easier, it would also be more revealing as to who has the most number of stories. This would be a good way to also establish the bias in my perspective and how I know more about some people closest to me and less about others distantly related.

On a more encouraging note, I learnt that stories can communicate a lot about people. Stories across location and time can be very revealing about characters, knowledge exposure, cultures—it brings out some cliches and preconceieved notions about cultures and also challenges them.

I feel like my design sucessfully implemented most of my goals. If the poster were displayed in a room full of people from my family, I’m sure it would prove to provide for a very entertaining and nostalgic evening for all.
