11. Areas of competence
Curriculum Vitae
11
(a) Natural Resource Economics and Management
This is my primary professional area. Concurrent with my capacity building/ teaching and research responsibilities, I apply my knowledge and experience in development activities. In particular, I like to underpin the importance of quality and quantity information in the management of agriculture and natural resources for social and economic development, but also to meet emerging global challenges regarding biodiversity, environment, climate change, health and poverty reduction.
(b) Capacity building
Extensive experience in developing and evaluating capacity needs at all levels, delivery of education and training and development of teaching/training materials. I have published works in these areas. All these with special reference to natural resources management, agriculture, general administration and Sustainable Development. Under my leadership at the Centre for Sustainable Development, we have trained up to 800 personnel from various sectors on wide ranging issues as Leadership, Environment, Tourism and Development Practice.
(c) Institutional and programme management
Professional experiences worldwide (Universities, FAO, ICRAF, IBRD, DFID, NRI, AfDB, AFORNET, NCF, RSPB, AFF, ESDA, Several NGOs and PSOs, National and State Governments) contribute significantly to understanding the management of institutions, including human and material /natural resources. Have initiated and been involved in many programmes and activities in many institutions. I have come to appreciate the value of diversity of cultures, gender, religions, opinions etc. and developed a very positive attitude towards them.
(d) Networking, institutional linkages/positioning
Experience in networking. As the contact Person for AFORNET, ANAFE, WARIMA, AFF, ASUDNET, GNMDP, ESDA, FAN at various times, Business Manager and later National Secretary, Forestry Association of Nigeria the Biggest Forestry Association in Africa, I played and still play key roles in developing a networking strategy that incorporates grassroots ownership and management. Understanding the roles and relative advantages of institutions is a key to appropriate institutional positioning (finding the niche) and success. Apart from the above-listed networks, I have direct links with over 60 Universities and Research Centres across the globe and I have utilized these to the advantage of my assigned positions and institutions where I have served. I initiated the founding of the African Sustainable

Development Network (ASUDNET). Skills in this area have enhanced the growth of programmes under my management and my own professional growth.
(e) Research and Extension
The main value in research is to be able to link it with human society and welfare, development and the environment. I possess a good understanding of issues in this area especially making research relevant. I developed, managed and supervised research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and for young scientists, evaluated research proposals. I have examined dissertations and theses at all levels of forestry and natural resources education within and outside Nigeria. I have assessed several researchers/academics from various institutions from within and outside Nigeria for career advancement up to professorial level. Since 2006, I have been a member of the Steering Committee of West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA) and became the General Secretary in 2010. I have led several grant winning teams, operating grants worth over USD3.00 million, including the one that won the USD900, 000 MacArthur Foundation Grants for the establishment of the Master’s in Development Practice Programme (MDP). The University of Ibadan is one of 10 original Universities that won the grant in a competition involving over 70 Universities across the globe. I still lead a team of 10 young scientists with whom we develop grant-oriented research proposals for the execution of research and development programmes which impact society. My research activities have generated about 120 publications, more than half of these, after I was promoted Professor in 2002. Also, a 19 chapter book on “Readings in Tropical Sustainable Forest Management” has been published in my honour by my PhD mentees.
(f) Communication and Organizing Ability
Developed communication skills (verbal and written) that are targeted and sensitive to the audience. I believe in effective communication, and that can only be achieved if it is in the right language, to the right interest group and given at the right time. I have successfully given lectures on several topical issues in several universities. I have successfully organized, co-organized and co-managed many international, regional, national and group meetings. For over 10 years I have played major roles in organizing the annual conferences of the Forestry Association of Nigeria, personally facilitating keynote speakers from outside Nigeria for six conferences in the last 10 years. I initiated the Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit. I
