Tertiary Education Information
What is tertiary education? Tertiary education is the level of education after high school, post-matric.
This includes FET, University, and University of Technology. When this
booklet refers to a ‘tertiary education institute’, that means any of these
places.
Why should I enroll? Tertiary education will give you the chance to expand your knowledge in a
very specific area of study, and to learn from Professors who have a detailed
knowledge of their subject to share with you. There are many different
subjects you can study, from general subjects that will open up a wide field of
jobs to you, to extremely specialized subjects that will teach you the skills you
need to work in a specific sector. It will greatly improve your future
employment prospects, making you a highly skilled individual. This is what
many employers value and are searching for.
3
What are my options? There are many options open to you, so that you can find the tertiary
education institution that best suits you and the future that you want to
have.
1. University of Technology/ Technikons
The minimum entrance qualification for a University of Technology is a
National Senior Certificate or equivalent. Certain courses at these institutions
require additional qualifications. They offer the following qualifications in a
wide variety of subjects:
- National Certificate / NC (requires 1 year of study)
- National Higher Certificate / NHC (requires 2 years of study)
- National Diploma / NDip(requires 3 years of study)
- Bachelor of Technology Degree/ BTech (required 4 years of
study)
- Master of Technology Degree/ MTech (requires 5 years of
study)
- Doctor of Technology Degree / DTech (requires 7 years of
study)
2. University
The entrance requirements for university depend on the individual
institution, and also with each course. You will have to check with your
chosen place of study to find out what their requirements are. They offer 4
different types of degree:
- Undergraduate (Bachelors/ BA, BCom, BSc): require 3 years of study
for most subjects
4
- Honors: require 1 year of study after the Bachelors degree.
Sometimes called ‘Post-Graduate Bachelor’s Degree’.
- Post-Graduate (Masters/ MA): require 1-2 years of study after the
Bachelor’s Degree and a thesis.
- Doctorate (PhD): requires a minimum of 2 years study after the
Masters, and a dissertation.
3. Further Education Training (FET)
Studying at an FET, you can gain a wide range of qualifications for vocational
skills. These institutions are more suited for those students who know the
career path they wish to go down, and want to obtain a job doing something
practical, such as an electrician, a technician, or an engineer.
“Be the change that you wish
to see in the world”
- Mahatma Gandhi

How do I apply?
To apply to a tertiary education institution, you need to obtain an application
form. You can download this from the website of the institution. It’s a good
idea to apply to more than one institution in order to maximize your chances
of admission. The requirements for the application vary for each individual
institution, however you can expect to need a certified copy of your ID and
your grade 11 results (if you don’t yet have grade 12). Each university is in
charge of their own deadlines, so make sure are familiar with the application
process for each university.

wholeheartedly
into everything in
order to achieve
anything worth
having”

Some Expert Advice!
ALWAYS check very carefully the conditions of each bursary, as each
company offering funding has every right to change the deadline, or
any other detail, without advertising that change. To avoid
disappointment, as soon as you see a suitable bursary that you wish
to apply for, use the contact details provided to find out all the
necessary information, or visit the website given.
It is essential that you have South African citizenship. Without it, you
cannot apply to any of these bursaries.
When the application demands that you send in proof of your ID, the
copy that you submit must be certified, or it will not be accepted and
your application will be void.
These bursaries demand that you already have a place to study, or an
offer of a place to study, at an institute of tertiary education, and
that you have proof of this. Therefore, we advise that your first
priority is to gain a place. If you do not obtain enough funding, you
may cancel your place, however it will be a problem in your
application for these bursaries if you do not have an acceptance
anywhere.
7
Some of these bursaries are offered for a limited period of time.
Check to see if they are an annual opportunity, or if they have
expired before you apply.
You need to check the conditions of the bursary. Some clearly state
that they cannot be used if you are accepting funding from any other
bursary; others encourage you to look for additional funding.
Where stated, you are required by a legally binding contract to work
for the company offering the bursary for a specific period after you
have graduated. Be prepared for this, and ask for all the details
before you sign anything.
It is very important that you apply for financial aid at the office of the
institute of tertiary education that you gain a place at, so that they
can register you. These institutions administer many different
bursaries, and for these specific bursaries, there is no other way to
get to them except through the institution. They will then put you
into the application process for all the available bursaries that you
qualify for.
It is not in the stars
to hold our destiny,
but in ourselves
