7. Results in LanguageA)

Art: “A work that provokes different range of emotions in different people and is usually created for some sort of benefit.”

Beauty: ”A quality that is admired by the mind whether or not it is socially defined.”

B)

Art: Weaknesses:

Saying that art will always provoke different range of emotions is making the definition too narrow since it does not always have to provoke feelings at all.

It is unclear what the word “work” represents, whether it is man labour or natural. A better word might be creation since it would include all things created whether natural or unnatural.

The word different has been used twice in one sentence. It sounds repetitive.

The word usually is unnecessary as art is always created for some sort of benefit whether it is for the creator or observers.

Art: Strengths:

A positive aspect of the definition is that it does not narrow itself to negative or positive emotions as many observers of art can feel any range of emotions.

The word created is helpful because it is broad enough to include all forms of art.

The statement “some sort of benefit” is a good definition because the benefit received from art varies extremely amongst different forms of art.

Beauty: Weaknesses:

The word mind makes the definition too narrow as animals and insects have minds, however, they do not have the capability of considering something to be beautiful.

This definition assumes that all beautiful qualities are admired when in fact beautiful things can be envied and even hated.

Might want to include individual mind because every individual has his/her own opinion of what is beautiful.

Beauty: Strengths:

The word quality fits the definition well because it is broad enough to include everything like person, place, thing or even the quality of a statement.

The fact that this definition says whether or not it is socially defined does not make it too narrow as beauty may or may not be socially defined.

C)

Art:” A creation that may provoke different range of emotions in people and is created for some sort of benefit.”

Beauty:” A quality that is pleasurable to the individual human being, whether or not it is socially defined.”

- is generally creative

2) When compared and contrasted, most of the characteristics of the each concept can fit extremely well within the other. There are more than double characteristics that fit both concepts when compared. Art specific characteristics focus more on the fact that art is a creation while the characteristics of beauty focus on the fact that beauty is a quality. For example, a painting can be sold, patented and can be legal/illegal. Beauty, in comparison, is a trait of an object that usually involves no work and cannot be patented or has any legal implications. Another thing to note out of this exercise is that beauty is associated with all things positive while art can be negative or positive.

3a)

Is art always negative? No, although it is possible that art can portray negative things and provoke negative emotions; that is not always the case. In fact most art is used for positive purposes.

Is beauty always a good thing? In most cases beauty is considered to be positive, however, it is not sufficient to say that beauty is 100% of the time a good thing. Sometimes beauty can be associated with having less intelligence.

Is beauty restricted to people only? No, beauty is a quality that anything can possess whether living or dead. For example, you may find that a rock lying on the beach is an extremely beautiful object or even a play done in a football game may be beautifully executed.

Is art restricted to paintings only? No, art is also a very vague concept although not as vague as beauty; it includes a wide variety of things such as the art of war or a specific martial arts fighting style and even music is considered to be an art.

Do beauty and art both involve payment of some sort? Although you can get paid to sell your art and you can be paid to display your beauty as a model, there are not always “payments” for beauty or art. Art is generally created for some benefit, whether it may be for personal enjoyment, payment or simple for admiration. Beauty is generally something that exists and whether it is taken advantage of for benefit or not depends upon the owner of the object.

Is beauty always superficial? No, there can be such a thing as inner beauty. A person with an excellent personality can be considered to be beautiful on the inside. Beauty is not simple skin deep.

Is art superficial? This is a hard question to consider, superficial means something on the surface and most art is usually considered art because of its surface. However, there are many other things considered when thinking about art. For example, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is beautiful on the surface but it also has “deeper” meanings because of the hidden messages and purposes intended by the painting. Also, some might consider the history of art to give it a value of importance.

3b)

Beauty is pleasurable but art does not have to be, so if art is meant to be pleasurable it must also be beautiful.

If art is to be profitable, it must be beautiful as no one will buy art that is not beautiful.

If art is not beautiful, there would be more psychopathic murders that are considered to be art by some people.

If art is beautiful, it can be more enjoyable.

4) Answer to the question: Yes, art must be beautiful.

Essay Outline

Introduction:MC: Art must be beautiful in perspective.

Art: ”A creation that may provoke different range of emotions in people and is created for some sort of benefit.”

Beauty: ”A quality that is pleasurable to the individual human being, whether or not it is socially defined.”

Paragraph 1:C1: Art has to be beautiful in the eyes of its creator in order to be created

P1: There are different types of music. Each created by a different musician who has his/her own taste.

Paragraph 2:C2: Different types of art become beautiful as they age.

P1: Certain types of art such as graffiti were once considered a vandalised act performed by black youth as a precursor of rebellion; however, as humanity strives to understand racial issues further, graffiti is now considered art rather than defacement of property.

Paragraph 3:C3: The more beautiful art is, the more beneficial it can be.

P1: Better musicians and better artists earn a better living.

ConclusionIn conclusion, art is a perception of the mind just like beauty. There will always be someone who finds it “ugly” and someone else who finds it “beautiful”.

Art is usually created with the intention of being appreciated. Art must be beautiful at

least in the eyes of the artist. Art can have many definitions based on how it is perceived. Here, it

is defined as a creation that may provoke different range of emotions in people and is created for

some sort of benefit. The classification of art does not depend on whether it is socially qualified

as beautiful. The beauty of art is in the eye of its viewer. For this essay, beautiful is defined as a

quality that is pleasurable to the individual human being, whether or not it is socially defined.

Therefore, considering this definition of beauty, every piece of art is beautiful to at least one

individual; that is, its creator.

Art can be of many forms. Music is an example. An artist creates his/her work because it

satisfies his/her sense of beauty. Musicians create different music based on their tastes and

desires. Today, music is filed into different genres that include rock, pop, hip hop and reggae.

Everyone has a different preference for music. However, not everyone enjoys all genres. There

will always be some who enjoys one genre more than others. Hence, to these individuals, their

choice of music is “beautiful” while others are “ugly”. As long as an individual finds it beautiful

enough, he/she will keep creating that form of art.

Different forms of art become beautiful as they age. Art may not be as valuable in the

present but as it grows old, it may gain acceptance. The aesthetic value of art usually increases

over time. One such example is graffiti drawn by black youth in poor communities. People did

not accept art by such ethnicities as they were considered to be low class. Such art was

considered vandalism. As Canadians became more diverse and multicultural, people slowly

began accepting graffiti as valuable art: a representation of black ethnicity. Another such

example is cave paintings lost in time. These paintings now belong in museums as a rare form of

11 Aazar Munir (207983927)

Page 12: Must Art Be Beautiful

February 21, 2008

art. Such art is a depiction of primitive human beauty. It may not have been considered beautiful

at the time but as it aged, people feel the need to preserve it.

The more beautiful the art is, the more beneficial it can be. Art has many benefits that

include pleasure, admiration and monetary compensation. Art requires talent and talent can be

used for gain. To illustrate this point, let us consider music once again. There are many sorts of

musicians with various socioeconomic backgrounds - Hollywood artists versus commuter or

street entertainers. Comparatively, well renowned artists are wealthier as they have the means to

reach out to a larger crowd and thus promote their tunes. Music aside, any form of art has its

talented and non-talented. Usually, the talented ones reap more benefits than the rest. However, it

should be noted that being non-talented does not mean that it is not art.

In conclusion, art is a perception of the mind just like beauty. There will always be

someone who finds it “ugly” and someone else who finds it “beautiful”. Art can be a variety of

things. It may be a sculpture or a mathematical representation, it may be a sound or a written

poetry or it may be a building structure or a painting in a washroom. Be that as it may, art is only

as beautiful as its preceptor and only as meaningful as its value defined by the individual. Art

need not be pleasant by all but beauty always is. So, if art is to be pleasant, it must also be

beautiful.
