MUSICAL GENRESAccording to the purpose or the type of music

that we are referring to we make a classification, this is what we know as a musical genre.

A genre refers to the composer´s intention when he creates a new piece of music. Depending on

the instruments and the intention we can find different genres.

INSTRUMENTAL GENRE:INSTRUMENTAL

MUSICInstrumental music is a musical composition without lyrics, or singing, only made of music produced by instruments.

PURE MUSIC: This genre applies to music that is composed to be played as music, and nothing else.

DESCRIPTIVE MUSIC: This genre is a type of art music that attempts to extra-musical contexts.

VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL

(COMBINED) GENRE: VOCAL AND

INSTRUMENTAL MUSICThis genre refers to music that requires a combination of voices and instruments.

RELIGIOUS GENRE:RELIGIOUS

MUSICReligious music is a music performed or composed for a

religious use or through a religious influence.

LITURGICAL MUSICLiturgical music is originated

as a part of a religious ceremony (liturgy), and includes a number of

traditions, both ancient and modern. Such as:

Gregorian chant.

NON-LITURGICAL MUSIC

It is music also composed and created for a

religious purpose, but it isn’t part of a religious ceremony. Such as: Christmas carols.

PROFANE GENRE:PROFANE MUSIC

Profane music is any type of music that was not created for a religious purpose otherwise it is used for entertainment or

cultural components. It is classified into two groups:POPULAR MUSIC

It is divided into two groups:FOLK MUSIC: It is music

transmitted orally or as music with unknown

composers. Such as: popular legends.

LIGHT MUSIC: It is music that is easy to understand of a

marked commercial character. Such as: pop,

rock...

CULTURED MUSICIt is music that is used for a

cultural purpose, it transmits the composer’s

feelings or the cultural context of the time. When

we are talking about cultured music we think of “serious music” or classical

music, such as symphonies or concert.

FUNCTIONAL GENRE: FUNCTION OR EVENTS MUSICThis music is used as an accompaniment in important

events such as weddings or funerals. The common music used in the weddings when the bride goes to

the altar or the Ode to Joy are good examples of this genre.
