• COULD use examples of styles to explain how and why they’re used

What do we mean by the term ‘styles’?

- “To design or make in a certain way…”- “A distinctive appearance by design…”

Music Video Styles

But what does that mean?

That we can design the visual look, create the atmosphere and impose our meaning in our music videos.

We can choose its style.

There are many different styles;

1. Narrative

2. Surrealist

3. Interpretative

4. Parody

5. Pastiche

6. Impressionist

7. Animation

Narrative

What is a narrative?- A story. Events connected together.

Surrealist

What is surrealism?

- A dreamlike state, seeking to emulate the unconscious mind

What do we mean by interpretive?

- “….to explain the meaning….”

The meaning of the video isn’t clear so the viewer has to come up with their own idea of what its about (ie. Its meaning)

Parody

What is a parody?

- A imitation of the style of another artist, often humorously exaggerated, or mocking.

Pastiche

What is pastiche?

- An artistic piece of work that imitates another’s respectfully, also referred to as homage

Is it respectful or is making fun of its inspiration?

Impressionism

Impressionism seeks to capture a moment, it should be a truthful snapshot of life, similar to a documentary

• Animation is the illusion of creating life & movement.

• Can include cartoons, 3D and stop motion

• Most music videos have an element of performance in them. We’ll look at this next week….

3. Explain how each style engages its viewer. Why did the director choose to use this style?
