Why is local, original music such a hard sell? Don’t get me wrong: Lots of people go to local shows and buy local albums and songs, but too many folks seem content just to sit back and swallow whatever they’re spoonfed by commercial radio, magazines, and blogs (and, yes, even some allegedly “local” publications).

Is discovering local music simply too difficult? Does the thought of working all day, eating dinner, driving to a venue, forking over cash for a cover charge, forking over cash for cocktails (or not), listening to music, and then getting home safely just give most people tired-head?

Still, even if the rigmarole associated with going out and actually seeing bands (which is the best way to judge them) is too much for some folks, there exits a wonderful invention called the internet. Every band in the world –– including the ones in your backyard –– is on it. There’s nothing stopping you the next time you pick up your favorite local publication from taking note of the bands written about that sound good to you and looking them up on the web.

Or you can keep listening to the same music you listened to when you were a kid. Yaaawn. If you happen to live in Fort Worth, you’re at a distinct advantage. The scene here is booming. Burning Hotels, Telegraph

Canyon, Calhoun, Quaker City Night Hawks, Pinkish Black, The Orbans, Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Skeleton Coast, and The Phuss are just some of the bands making headlines here and beyond. There’s nothing wrong with downloading and enjoying your faves from days of yore. But if that’s all you’re doing, well, you need to get out more. Period.

To make things easy for you, we’ve arranged a concert on Sunday, June 24, at eight venues in the West 7th corridor, featuring 48 bands, all from the Fort Worth area. To make things even easier, the show is free. Go, listen, and, if the spirit moves you, plop down a few bucks and walk away with a CD or two by a band or bands that impressed you. Yes, our annual Music Awards (now in their 15th year) constitute a voting opportunity of sorts, but nothing monumental is at stake. The whole shebang is just a fun way to gauge where our fellow citizens’ heads are at. Nearly 7,000 people spent the day with us last year, and throughout the month of voting we received nearly 10,000 votes.

Where’s your head? –– Anthony Mariani

Symphonic rock at its best and not the least bit cheesy. The vehicle for veteran singer-songwriter Chris Hardee, Alan took five years to complete its debut album, The Universal Answer is Both, a nominee for Album of the Year last year. The band rarely performs live, though Hardee never stops writing –– he’s already whipped up enough material to begin recording a second album.

Pounding out rock that harks back to The Kinks and The Who, the Apache 5 is definitely one of a kind. Featuring best-guitarist nominee Steffin Ratliff (Pablo & The Hemphill 7) and drummer Austin Green (Telegraph Canyon), the foursome neatly encapsulated its spirit on Big Black Smoke, a 2012 nominee for EP of the Year.

Quite simply, there’s no other band in North Texas (or probably on the planet) doing anything like Beauxregard’s intoxicating New-Wave-meets-spaghetti Western-meets-martinis barroom rock. The band is currently at work on a follow-up to last year’s Gyphoemia, a nominee for Album of the Year.

Brenna Manzare, a Colleyville native who only recently kindled her inner songstress, linked up with a pair of friends’ friends, two guys from oso closo, to form her current outfit, the Proper husbands, and their brand of electric folk is familiar but also hard to pin down.

With last year’s groundbreaking eponymous album, Burning hotels established themselves as the giants of North Texas synth-pop, racking up regional praise and steady airplay on The Local Edge with Mark. Led by co-songwriters Matt Mooty and Chance Morgan, the nearly 10-year-old band is about to embark on a West Coast tour this month, with an East Coast tour in the works.

calhoun consistently turns out smooth, propulsive pop with dashes of roots and rock, a sound most perfectly manifested on last year’s best-album winner, Heavy Sugar –– you can regularly hear cuts from that gem on KXT. The brainchild of co-songwriters Tim Locke and Jordan Roberts, the band recently added a new bassist, Danny Balis (The King Bucks, Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket), and is currently writing new material.

cleanup serves up a highly musical yet complex version of indie rock: lots of intricate yet melodic twin guitarwork and shifty rhythms. These four guys have been recording an EP at their home studio that they’ll release at The Grotto on Friday, July 20, with fellow nominees Skeleton Coast and Austin’s Look Mexico.

Singer-songwriter scott copeland channels some of the diverse variants of Texas Music — melodic finger-picking, country crooning, dancing blues — for a cohesive soundtrack to his thoughtful, Robert Earl Keen-ish lyrics. His most recent, self-titled album is a nominee for Album of the Year.

d-snacks offer a vaguely Caribbean vibe that echoes Sublime but without the now-clichéd ska backbone. The band has been laying down tracks at its home studio and been playing out a lot to generate some scratch to finish recording.

Troubadour derek larson continues to mix his literary inspirations with the trademarked heavy rhythms of The Leavers to generate a hard-charging and mostly twang-less variety of Texas Music. Larson is finally in the studio laying down tracks for a new album –– it’s been a couple of years since his last one, Takers and Leavers.

Melody-obsessed proto-punk rockers doom Ghost, whose three members cite dead ’60s bluesmen and dead Russian novelists as influences, are angular and raw. The trio’s recently released debut album of alleged demos made HearSay’s list of the top local albums of 2011.

TCU alum dru B shinin’ is about more than girls, guns, and g’s and more than any other R&B/Rap nominee crosses over into the indie-rock scene, performing frequently in local joints and with a backing band rather than a laptop.

Featuring stylish shredder Tyrel Choat and his brother, bassist Dustin Choat –– and another bassist, Randy Crooks (see: Vorvon) –– the cosmic trigger picks up where the Choats’ previous band, Addnerim, left off: on the planet Metal-as-Fuck. But where Addnerim was melodic and soaring, Cosmic Trigger is sludgy and doomy. The five-piece's debut album will be out in a few weeks.

Minimalist duo Foxtrot uniform taps into indie-blues for inspiration. Guitarist/vocalist Kenny Uptain and drummer/backup vocalist Kelly Test have recorded a bunch of songs at Test’s home studio and hope to release the fruits of that labor, the album Huj! Huj! Hajrah! (Hungarian for “fast, fast, faster”), by August.

The indie-blues-breaking Frisky disco is pretty in-your face. These three young turks crank out heavy, ragged, pounding blooze that goes well with The Black Keys, Quaker City Night Hawks, and Foxtrot Uniform.

A five-member hive of musically adventurous juju, Gonzo city packs many styles (read: lots of ska) into its post-punk jams. Inspired equally by The Pixies and Tom Waits, GC will release its debut album, Pretty and Violent, soon.

The insta-party contempo-jazz ensemble Gunga Galunga rolls out devastating beats beneath multiple layers of brilliant melodies, creating a sound that is as danceable as it is mind-blowing. Bassist John Shook Jr. and drummer Lucas White are each nominated in their respective categories.

Singer-songwriter tim halperin has been keeping busy since his going deep into American Idol a couple of seasons ago, touring, working social media (he releases new covers and the occasional original via YouTube quite frequently), and young Tim has just released his debut album, the marvelous Rise & Fall.

For the past couple of years, the best live band category has belonged to cowpunks holy Moly, whose live shows are pretty hard to beat for their rowdiness and high levels of crowd interactivity. The band’s fourth and most recent album, the Will Hunt-produced Grasshopper Cowpunk, is a nominee for Album of the Year.

Josh irwin’s high-energy folk-blues-funk is straight out of church, his powerful voice, precise guitar work, and sparkling brass conjuring up sunshine and Sundays. Irwin has toured the country on his own with just his guitar, but he seems to be back in the Fort for at least a little while now.

There doesn’t seem to be any slowing frontman Danno Mabe, who with his Jefferson colby bandmates, drummer Matt Mabe (Quaker City Night Hawks, Stella Rose, EPIC RUINS, Big Mike’s Box of Rock) and bassist Anthony Sosa (The Raven Charter), has put out an album every year of his band’s existence, which will be seven this year. Album No. 7, Animisms, will no doubt be as bombastic and psychedelic as its predecessors.

Man, you haven’t seen a rock ’n’ roll show until you’ve seen Josh Weathers & the true+endeavors. Blasting out powerful blue-eyed soul, these boys are so wild and yet so tight, they could give The Boss and his E-Street Band a run for their money. Weathers and company are also recording new material for an album to be released soon.

the hanna Barbarians’ bluesy stomp hits you like a whiskey tsunami. Onstage, these guys play like they’re rocking arenas, which, actually, is the only way to rock. The sextet has been writing material for a follow-up to 2011’s awesomely fuzzed-out and Southern-fried Zyzygy.

katsük blends world-beat with classic-rock influences, creating an undeniably positive vibe. Led by singer-songwriter Daniel Katsük, the band has just released its long-awaited sophomore album, Zero Point.

Veteran singer-songwriter kevin Aldridge has put to rest his former vehicle, Chatterton, and is coming correct with his new project, the Appraisers. Like Chatterton, they blend folksy melodies with good ol’ fashioned countrified rock. Aldridge’s forthcoming solo album will include production work and backing instrumentation from drummer Kenny Smith and guitarist Scott Davis, two guys who earn their living backing Americana superstar Hayes Carll.

Though kyeyote is originally from Chicago, the freewheeling, lightning-fast, Rakim-esque rapper hasn’t been afraid to rep his new environs and has already played a few shows at the venerable Lola’s Saloon.

Consisting of brothers Jeevan and Mathew Antony plus drummer Ben Hance (Secret Ghost Champion frontman), Madràs purveys honey-sweet indie-rock that’s also contemplative and moody. The band’s debut CD, things can change, should be out early next month.

On his new album, A Thousand Dreams, keegan Mcinroe dredges the depths of his experiences to create a rich tapestry of American roots music, with smart, soulful lyrics. Hooky honky-tonk and blues figure also prominently into his sound.

Mills & co. have been riding high on their recently released debut, Don’t Ever Look Back Twice, a nominee for Album of the Year and the handiwork mainly of frontman and namesake Taylor Craig Mills, whose melodic grandeur and often melancholy narratives paint vivid pictures of wounded souls: austere and haunting yet also beautiful.

The thing about the My Wooden leg guys is you never know which direction their gypsy-tinged twang-rock is going to take. The trio is about to release its sophomore album, The Jealous Disco.

Comprising some of the most skilled musos in town, including best guitarist nominee Steffin Ratliff, Pablo & the hemphill 7 have been serving up reggae-rock for over a decade. Sure, maybe the hair by the temples is graying, but the band’s shows are still as tight and party-tastic as ever.

The pop-punking Pajammas occasionally flavor their uptempo music with a proggy time signature or lyrical reference to outer space. You'd be forgiven for thinking that maybe these guys secretly dig Rush.

luke Wade & No civilians offer dynamic romps –– horn-laden fire-starters and open-wound-y ballads –– and Wade’s beautiful voice simply soars. Highly recommended for fans of Martin Sexton or John Mayer.

There’s nothing subtle or complex about this trio of young twentysomethings. No, the Phuss just blast out punch-you-in-the-nose rock ’n’ roll tuneage about chicks, booze, and The Struggle. The band just released its debut, self-titled album and opened several shows for none other than The Toadies.

This year’s breakout band has to be Pinkish Black, the duo of veteran musos vocalist/keyboardist Daron Beck and drummer Jon Teague whose molten, ominous orchestral-doom has earned kudos from no less an international tastemaking publication than Pitchfork. The band’s recently released self-titled debut album is a masterstroke in elegant brutality.

Quaker city Night hawks might just be the hardest working band in Fort Worth. In the span of a year, they released their debut album, ¡Torquila Torquila!, got into SXSW backing L.A. singer-songwriter Jenny O, and put out a live EP, Live at Magnolia Motor Lounge, in anticipation of their forthcoming sophomore studio effort.

One of the most recent additions to the F-Dub scene is rotten roots, a foursome of three middle-aged reformed punks and a young drummer, churning out unmistakably Texan punk-blues –– let’s call it blues-collar rock.

Loud but catchy and fun as all hell, sally Majestic practices a unique species of ska-rock that’s somewhere between The Police and the Chili Peppers. The band is responsible for one of the best, catchiest songs ever to come out of North Texas, “Brand New Hat,” a nominee for Song of the Year last year.

The five guys in stoogeaphilia adamantly maintain they are not a cover or tribute band but a repertory band, reviving forgotten and under-sung early punk classics from the likes of The Stooges, The Dead Boys, and The MC5.

skeleton coast masks Pet Shop Boyish pop in the guise of swirling psychedelia, everything brought to life onstage with an eye-popping light show. The band has just finished recording its debut album, co-produced by the braintrust behind the Fort Worth super-group EPIC RUINS: co-songwriters Jordan Richardson (Ben Harper & The Relentless7, Son of Stan) and Steve Steward (Oil Boom, Vorvon, Kevin Aldridge & The Appraisers).

After you get to the end of secret Ghost champion’s recently released debut album, Psychosomatic Immortality, you might wonder what planet these guys are from. A blessedly weird mix of catchy melodies, spacey textures, and jazzy solos, the songs might sound like classic-rock deep cuts. But they aren’t.

One of the longest-running, hardest-rocking bands in North Texas, stella rose purveys a distinctly melodic brand of neo-grunge that also has its moments of Zeppelin-ian dynamism and melancholy. The trio is currently working on a follow-up to 2010’s Drag.

telegraph canyon continues delivering its brand of lush, folksy roots rock and is working on the long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s spellbinding The Tide and The Current. The new album will also be produced by Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel).

Whiskey Folk ramblers are North Texas’ answer to Calexico and Squirrel Nut Zippers, drawing from an eclectic mix of musical traditions and infusing everything with a fun, madcap style that’s uniquely Whiskey Folk.

Rowdy nostalgists War Party’s tunes are rough around the edges but have creamy centers. Don’t misunderstand: These four young’uns are punk through and through. However, their fast-and-furious drumming and strumming coalesces around uptempo melodies from the ’60s and (!) doo-wop.

Another relative newcomer is We the sea lions, a band whose music we not lightly refer to as indie-pop brilliance. The band is currently laying down tracks for a recording to be released soon.

Twin bassists Steve Steward (Oil Boom, EPIC RUINS, Kevin Aldridge & The Appraisers) and William Wells (One-Fingered Fist) form the heart of vorvon, a face-melting quartet about to release its debut album, Bass Mountain, recorded at The Echo Lab in Argyle.

Though this quartet is still working on an album with Texas Music great Ray Wylie Hubbard, the band managed to crank out an awesome EP, Make it Alright, a nominee for EP of the Year last year. Churning out a Southern-fried but Stones-y take on roots rock, the Will callers call to mind The Black Crowes on a Creedence kick.
