MUNSTER BRANCH PRESIDENTCharlie Buckley –President 2017-2018

It is indeed a fantastic honour and a great privilege to have been elected as the 120th President of the Munster Branch for the coming season. Many of the great names of the game have preceded me in this role and I do hope my efforts over the season will fully justify the confidence placed in me to represent Munster Rugby.

I must sincerely thank my club UCC RFC for nominating me for the position and becoming their 10th Branch President. I would like to give special mention to Old Christian’s RFC, where I spent many years as a coach to their under-age teams.

Over the past two seasons, may I also thank my predecessors for the roles they played in the preparation for this honour. I had the pleasure of working with Bertie Smith and Gerry O’ Shea, two great rugby men.

During the past two seasons, the officers have focused on increased participation at the lower adult level, in particular between school and U20 level.

To this end, we established a committee under Brian Humphries and Mick Collopy who produced a Player Data Analysis Report. This highlighted the active players in each senior club in Munster, how many matches players actually played and how many U20 players involved in our game. It also showed that

some clubs were entering too many competitions. Hopefully we learn from this report and we won’t have as many walk overs this season.

A special word of thanks to the volunteers in all our clubs. Our game is founded on a volunteer ethos for without them we would not have a game. To the administrators, coaches, players and parents, the game is indebted to you.

To the MAR, we thank you for the work of your volunteers and for officiating at over 3000 matches last season. A cliché it may be, but quite simply we would not have a game without our referee’s. Can I plead with all clubs and schools to nominate a member to the Association in the coming season as they urgently need your support.

It has been my pleasure over the last two seasons to work with our CEO, Garrett Fitzgerald and his staff. It is only when you are in this position that you realise the workload they face on a day to day basis. We appreciate your continued support in the interests of Munster Rugby.

I would like to acknowledge and thank our lead sponsor Bank of Ireland for their continued financial support and all of our other sponsors, many of whom are with us a number of years. We are currently facing major challenges both on and off the field and hopefully the team continues to perform successfully.

To all our clubs and schools, which are the bedrock of our game, may I wish you a most successful season. Best wishes to our AIL teams and hopefully our 15 senior teams will enjoy a successful year.

A special mention to our National Women’s Team who competed in the World Cup in August. It was a fantastic tournament, made even more special as Ireland hosted the competition for the first time.

To our coaching team, Rassie, Jacques, Felix and Jerry, we wish you a most successful season. Last year, reaching the semi-final of the Champions Cup and the final of the Pro12, gave us supporters a most enjoyable year. Hopefully this season we may win silverware.

In conclusion, I would like to wish all involved in Munster Rugby every success and I look forward to meeting you throughout the season.
