More than $100,000 was raised at

Mediterranean Nights, a wine tasting at Italian Wine Merchants, near Union Square. The event, benefiting AHRC’s Residential Services program, was presented by CNY Group and Drennen Bros Hauser Foundation.

The Robert Mize and Isa White Trimble Family Foundation was a benefactor sponsor. Helene and Johannes

Huth and Nicholas Pascarella & Co. were patron sponsors.

Approximately 100 attended the event, which was co-chaired by Jeanne Sdroulas and Theodora Vardis.

Proceeds from the event will provide AHRC residents with items .

that improve their quality of life, such as FitBits, new clothes, dinner and a movie or a vacation.

There are more than 600 people living in AHRC residences throughout New York City, many of whom do not have a source of income or family members to provide such items. n

T he Spring Fling, an afternoon featuring lunch and games of

chance, raised nearly $30,000 for the Brooklyn Blue Feather Elementary School and AHRC Middle/High School.

The event was held in the Brooklyn Blue Feather auditorium and was attended by approximately 160 people including parents, students, staff members and friends and relatives.

A hot lunch, desserts and beverages were provided by the Notaro and Nunez family, El Caribe Caterers, Battista Ristorante, Ben’s Pizza, Aliotta Pastry Shop, Penta Water and Zevia.

A parent committee, chaired by Courtney and Grant Case and Michelle Pisani-Hinojo and Alfredo Hinojo, solicited and donated more than 100 prizes. The event included chance auctions, raffles, a box pool and lottery boards, among other games of chance.

Funds raised at the event help meet needs that cannot be met with government funds. For example, AHRC Middle/High School Principal Andrew Winfrey (left) with

funds raised at previous events to benefit the schools were used to refurbish classrooms, purchase curriculum materials, develop internships and send students on field trips. Brooklyn Blue Feather Elementary School and AHRC Middle/High School each serve approximately 125 students with autism.

The AHRC New York City Foundation thanks the benefit chairs – Mr. and Mrs. Case, Ms. Pisani-Hinojo and Mr. Hinojo – and the Benefit Committee members: Melissa Allende and Michael Breder, Christine and Greg Clements, Yasmin Haniff, Jessenia and Michael Herzog, Elizabeth and Eddie Martinez, Mary McGuire-Weafer and Stephen Weafer, Dina Micucci and Donald Kaplan, Josephine and Oscar Nunez, Ellen Smith and Joseph Zevola, Tarsha and Kevin Woods and Inna Yalovsky and Dmitry Sapozhnikov. n

The AHRC New York City Foundation has made a $500,000 grant to fill

a gap in New York State funding for AHRC’s Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program and Day Habilitation without Walls Program.

The Melissa Riggio program enables students who are graduating from high-school special-education classes to take part in college academic, vocational and social activities alongside typical students. The program is offered at community colleges in four boroughs.

The Day Habilitation without Walls Program operates entirely in the community, with participants choosing their activities. Each day begins at the program participant’s home where he or she is met by an AHRC staff member who provides support throughout the day.

New York State funding for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018 was based on AHRC’s spending in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, less one percent. It is expected that funding for the coming fiscal year will remain at the same level. n

Two AHRC preschool playgrounds to be renovated with grant

The AHRC New York City Foundation has made a $300,000 grant to

renovate the playgrounds at AHRC preschools in the Bronx and Brooklyn. The playgrounds were last renovated in 2005.

The children at the schools have developmental delays or disabilities or autism. There are approximately 140 children in preschool and daycare programs at the Bronx location and approximately 175 at the Brooklyn location.

The schools provide high-quality education and special services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy.

Research has shown that playgrounds are vital for young children’s language, social and motor skills development. n

Two new AHRC job-training sites have been modified to comply

with the Americans with Disabilities Act, thanks to a $91,500 grant from the AHRC New York City Foundation.

The two sites, one in Brooklyn and one in Staten Island, serve a total of approximately 1,000 people. Among the programs offered at the sites are supported employment, which provides opportunities to enter the workforce and job coaching for those who secure employment; Project Search, which assists high school students in

transitioning to the workforce; and TechnoStart, a 12-week program of instruction in widely used computer applications such as Word and Excel.

Both of the locations required new bathrooms, and the Staten Island location required a lift to make it wheelchair-accessible. n
