CONCEPT OF TEAM & TEAM WORK

Multidisciplinary team in mental health care include people from health care professions like doctorate , nursing, clinical physician, social worker and many more . a good team is paramount for success of any group so as in mental health settings.

Team work is one of the steps leading to exemplary care of the individual, his family & community at large, thus making the millennium concept of “holistic patient care” a reality.

Today we are going to discuss about roles, education qualification and functions of 6 members of mental health care team.

PSYCHIATRIST• The practice of medicine

is the assessment of the physical or mental condition of an individual and the diagnosis , treatment and prevention of any disease, disorder or dysfunction (Medicine Act,1991, S.O. 1991, c.30).leader of health care team.

Educational qualification

Psychiatrist is a physician that is qualified in MD psychiatry, which require a 3 years residency , 2 years of clinical practice and completion of an examination. • In Canada, they need licence to practice

medicine in their province and specialist certification in psychiatry by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons or Provincial College.

FUNCTIONS• Assessment:-

Performing health assessments including: Taking a full medical history

• Screening patients at risk for hereditable conditions and potentially preventable disorders.

TREATMENT/MANAGEMENT• Provision of continuous care to patients over their lifetime based on the delivery of the following services:– Acute medical treatment life threatening illness presenting to emergency rooms, in hospitals, in the home and in long term care.

EDUCATION/ADVOCACY Perform the role of advocate to assist patients to navigate through a complex health care system in order to obtain the best care in the most expeditious way in a cost effective manner.- Identify and meet the needs of the individual patients, the practice population and the community in general by working with a variety of partners throughout the public health, community, and hospital sectors.

REFERRALS/COLLABORATION Assist with discharge planning, rehabilitation services, out-patient follow-up and home care services Coordinate referrals to other health care providers and agencies, including specialists, rehabilitation and secondary and tertiary facilities based on patients’ needs.

Scope of practiceThough the medical specialty of psychiatry

uses research in the field of neuroscience, psychology, medicine, biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, it has generally been considered a middle ground between neurology and psychology. Unlike other physicians and neurologists, psychiatrists specialize in the doctor–patient relationship and are trained to varying extents in the use of psychotherapy and other therapeutic communication techniques.

Education required for the role of social worker

• A bachelor's degree is required for most social work positions, but some positions and settings require a master's degree. Clinical social workers must have a master's degree. Becoming a licensed clinical social worker usually requires a master's degree in social work and 2 years or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience after graduation. After completing their supervised experience, clinical social workers must pass an exam to be licensed.
