Term 1 Week 3 Issue 1 2020

Muirfield Matters

Welcome to all parents and students! I especially

welcome our new students and their parents.

Outstanding HSC Results

We congratulate our 2019 Year 12 students for their

many outstanding results.

The results in Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2 English are of

particular note. These three courses had a very high percentage of

Band 6 results.

The Sydney Morning Herald placed us on their Top 10 list of public

comprehensive schools for English. This is a testament to the hard

work of the students and the relentless efforts of their teachers.

Our Dux was Sharon Xu with an ATAR of 94.4.

Sharon studied English EAL/D, Biology, Chemistry,

Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics

Extension 2, with Band 6s in both of the highest and

most challenging Mathematics courses.

Fourteen students were placed on the Distinguished Achievers List

for a range of courses. The Distinguished Achievers List has the

students who achieved a result in the highest band (Band 6 or Band

E4) for one or more courses.

Strong Start!

We have had a strong start to the school year. I have visited several classes

and have been pleased with the level of engagement and effort. All

students are provided with a school diary in which they should record

assignments, homework and test dates.

I especially encourage parents of junior students to regularly check their

child’s diary and make sure their child brings it to school every day. The

assessment schedules for all year groups are available on the school’s

website under the Learning at our school tab. These schedules should help

students, and their parents, plan their work load.

It was pleasing to stand under the COLA at our recent assemblies and see

all our students return for the beginning of the academic year so well

attired. There was a sea of pale green and white school shirts. Wearing the

correct uniform indicates that the student is part of the community and

accepts the school s standards and expectations.

If you have any uniform items that your child has outgrown, please consider

donating to the school. We help families who need some assistance.

Alternatively you can donate items to the uniform shop, which resells items,

making uniform affordable for all.

Staff News - 2020

I have continued to fund the position of Deputy Principal Support.

Ms Coates has been working closely with families of many students who

have mental health conditions. She has also led professional learning for all

school staff on how we can best promote a mentally healthy community

and support our young people. I have seen the benefit of

having her expertise and time to dedicate to these students.

While most Muirfield classrooms are always orderly learning

environments, adolescents can present with challenging

behaviours, and some individuals have particular behaviour

concerns. This year Ms Coates will also be directly supporting

staff and leading professional learning on strategies for

classroom management.

I am also funding extra release for Ms Ansoul to support

teachers in addressing HSC teaching. Ms Ansoul is an

outstanding teacher and has much to share with all teachers, particularly

early career teachers. Her role as an

instructional leader for 2020 will ensure

our students’ ongoing HSC success and

improvement in our HSC

results.

Ms Vassos has joined us, teaching Food

Technology and VET Hospitality. Mr

Hallab also joined the TAS faculty last term.

New to Science are Mr Steel and

Ms Dodain.

Mr Hofman has joined the HSIE faculty.

Ms Craig is replacing Mr Contreas who is

on leave for 2020. Ms Craig knows

Muirfield well – she was a student here for 6

years. She is very happy to return and says Muirfield

students are always great students.

Mr Venables and Mr Skevington have moved into

the TAS faculty. Agriculture is actually part of the

technology area and our two “Ag Boys” will be

sharing their skills with the TAS teachers as the

Agriculture.

In English, Ms Dykes has returned to Muirfield, after being on extended leave

for a number of years. Ms Douglas is also joining the English faculty for four

days a week.

School Photographs

Mrs Pasternatsky did a wonderful job

organising photo day. These photographs

serve as a wonderful memento of school

life and are great to look back upon in

future years. Year 12 fun photo continues to

be a tradition at Muirfield where students

show amazing creativity.

Building Work

If you have driven by or visited the school, you would have noticed the

building work taking place. Several blocks are having the roofs replaced

and new guttering installed. When the school was built the down pipes

were installed within the buildings, which meant a lot of flooding when the

down pipes were blocked, or in heavy rain.

The new gutters should prevent the flooding. As anyone who has had

building work down knows, the completion date is often more hopeful or

suggestive than definite. The roof work was meant to be completed by

Week 2, however, several factors delayed the work. When working on the

drainage, the builder discovered we needed all new storm water drains

installed.

This term work will also commence on replacing the upper walkway ceilings

and refurbishment of the CAPA staffroom. We are also hopeful that the new

STEM room, which is a school funded project, will commence this term.

Open Evening – Monday 2 March, 5-7pm

If you have family or friends who are interested in sending their children to

Muirfield, our Open Evening is coming soon. It always has such a positive

celebratory feel – much like a primary school Education Week extravaganza

– that I wish we could invite existing parents.

The students who volunteer to act as guides or assistants really enjoy the

evening. But as space is at a premium and the hall is over-flowing with

prospective families, we have to limit our invitations to those looking to enrol

at Muirfield.

Student Attendance

We know regular attendance is essential to assist students to maximise their

potential. School staff monitor and record student attendance as part of our

duty of care. We know that attendance can be affected by a number of

factors. Not attending school is often the first indication of deeper problems.

Parents can view the marked morning roll via the parent portal. If you note an

issue, contact the front office so we can fix or clarify the matter. Parents can

notify the school of their child’s absence via the portal, by phone or by email.

If you have any concerns or questions, for example about taking extended

leave, contact the office. The office staff will be either able to answer your

questions or put you through to the person best placed to help.

PARENT AND CAREGIVERS PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS

In the interests of student safety, parents and caregivers are not permitted to

drive onto school grounds at any time, including before or after school, to drop

off or collect students, or to attend meetings with staff.

There are deliveries and staff accessing the car park at different times during

the day and the access is very narrow.

The only exceptions to this is when either you or your passenger has a disability

or if you are picking up a sick or injured student.

STUDENT SAFETY

IS UP TO ALL OF US

THANK YOU

FOR PLAYING YOUR PART

Muirfield Leadership Forum - December 2019

Congratulations to the Student Executive for a well

run and tremendously enjoyable leadership camp.

Following attendance at the highly regarded

Mitchell Youth Forum, our student leaders felt

inspired to replicate the fun activities and learning

opportunities for Muirfield students.

The student Executive ran every aspect of the

camp, from budgeting to catering. All of the

students involved had a fantastic experience.

It was certainly an impressive start to their

leadership.

In December, Rory one of our very talented Year 12 students headed to the

National Synchronized Ice Skating Competition with her team, The Southern

Sky.

Additionally, during the holidays she travelled to Zagreb, Croatia, to skate

with her team, representing Australia, in the Snowflakes Trophy. Rory's team

made up of 16 girls, took Bronze in the Mixed Age Division.

We look forward to hearing more about her amazing achievements in the

future.

If you are a Muirfield CAPA Mum or Dad, then CAPA needs you...Desperately.

We only have 3-4 meetings a year, on a Thursday night at 7pm, and the meetings

always have chocolate and nibbles.

Meetings are no longer than 60 minutes, unless you stay longer for a drink or a chat.

Annual activities requiring parent support include:

MADD night (school hours off site student supervision, transport equipment to

venue, make a hamper for a raffle)

CAPA workshops (making or providing food to feed

the tutors)

Bandlinks (pizza & soft drink order/delivery)

SummerArts (sausage sizzle, intermission drinks &

snacks)

Support your CAPA kid and help CAPA out. Without our support many activities will be

simply impossible for the CAPA faculty to run.

Keep an eye on the school calendar or your emails for notice of the first meeting in

2020. It is held on the first Thursday of the month after the P&C Committee Meeting, in

the school common room. These meetings are prompt to start and run quickly. We will

be focusing on supporting the CAPA Workshops in Week 2 of Term 2.

If you are time poor and can’t make it to a meeting, but would still like to help, some

things you could consider are assisting in:

the running of the online booking system for ticket purchases

costume alterations

sourcing out specific items for the running of events

Please remember that all items of uniform are available throughout the year

from the Uniform Shop.

With our new online ordering system in place, parents now have much more

flexibility when ordering uniforms for their child.

Students are still encouraged though, to come into the Uniform Shop during

Monday lunchtime trade, to try on items for sizing. Items can then be

purchased in the shop using cash, cheque or card or, at a later date/time

using the Qkr app.

All uniform items will be able to be purchased through the online purchasing

app, Qkr! - see instruction sheet following. Qkr is a secure, encrypted app run

by Mastercard. Both debit cards & credit cards can be used.

All orders made on Qkr for a Monday lunchtime pickup (12.30pm to 1.30pm),

must be placed by midnight the Sunday before.

Black Fleece Jackets - Limited stock and sizes are available in the shop until

sold out. Purchases of Black Fleece Jackets can only be made in the Uniform

Shop. They are not available to order via the QKR App.

PLEASE NOTE - NO UNIFORM ORDERS ARE TO BE PLACED THROUGH THE OFFICE.

Any questions can be directed to the Uniform Shop Committee via our email:

[email protected].

Thank you for your continued support.
