§ Youmaywishtobringinvisualaids,manipulatives(blocks,rods,diagrams),orotheractivitiestogetyourclassmatesinvolvedinthelesson.
§ Duringanexamweek,wewillfocusonpracticeexamproblemsforourrecitation.
Duringourfirstrecitation,wewillgoover,indetail,theexactexpectationsandproceduresfortherestofthesemester.PresentationswillbegininWeek2.
PortfolioExpectations Aswegothoughthesemester,youwillcollectmaterialsandwewillcoverskillsthat
specificallyaddresstheNationalCouncilofTeachersofMathematicsPrinciplesandStandardsandtheCommonCoreStateStandardsinMathematics.Asteachers,youwillberequiredtoconcentrateonthesestandardsinyourownclassroom.Therefore,foryourportfolio,youwillbesolvingavarietyofproblemsandmatchingthemtothestandardsatdifferentgradelevels.Youwillbeaskedtoexaminespecificproblemsthatrepresenteachofthesestandards.Tenportfolioassignmentswillbeprovidedwithexercisesthatrelatetowhathasbeenstudiedinclass.Theseproblemswillbeincludedinyourfinalportfolioasrepresentativeofsomeofthestandards.Attheendofeachoftheportfolioassignmentisaquestionregardingwhichstandardshavebeenaddressed.Aspartofourrecitationclass,wecandiscusssomeoftheseproblemsandtherelatedstandards.§ Inaformalreport,youwilldescribecommonmistakesmadeforeachtypeof
problemandgiveadetailed,step-by-step,annotatedsolutionofeachproblem.In
yourportfolioreport,youwilltalkabouthoweachproblemrelatestothechosenstandardorgradespanexpectationforRhodeIslandstudents.
• Theportfoliowillbegradedonarubricandisworth25%ofyourgrade;itwillbegradedrigorously.Toaidyouinkeepingupwiththework,therewillbethreecheckpointsthroughoutthesemester.Datesforthesecheckpointsarelistedonthesuggestedcalendarattheendofthesyllabus.However,ifyoukeepupwithitthroughoutthesemester,andcomeseemetoworkoutspecificdetailsorquestionsyoumayhave,thereisnoreasonwhyyoushouldnotdowell.
