    The possibility of up to 500 scholarships being offered to nurses in regions such as Moorabool and Melton has been welcomed by leading health service executives, who say it will improve access to postgraduate education and ease workplace shortage concerns.

    The proposed federal budget allows for an extra $13.4 million over three years for up to 500 rural nursing and allied health scholarships.

    Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Bruce Marshall said rural nurses were faced with challenges accessing ongoing education and training, either due to distance or cost, and the funding would help lift that barrier.

    For example, a post-graduate midwifery course may cost up to $18,000 or $6500 if they are able to get a HECS place and take a minimum 18 months to complete full-time, Mr Marshall said.

    Whilst completing courses, nurses often reduce the hours that they work, which affects them and their families financially. The current scholarships generally only cover between $1500 and $3000, and are limited in number.

    The Australian College of Nursing executive manager, Kathleen McLaughlin, said the scholarships would attract nurses to work in rural health services and support the professional development of nurses who are currently practising.

    She said nurses in rural areas had extra rights to be able to administer and prescribe some medications so they could respond to an emergency.

    For nurses to do that, they need to stay on top of education about medication and prescriptions.

    Ms McLaughlin said rural health services often faced more difficulty recruiting nurses.

    Nationally, we have an ageing nurse workforce and it is recognised that we are facing a nationwide nurse shortage into the near future.

    Its imperative that strategies are in place to ensure we have a rural nurse workforce with the range of skills and of the size to meet the health needs of rural populations.

    Ballan District Health and Care chief executive Wayne Weaire said the announcement was particularly relevant for rapidly growing towns like Ballan.

    We need the scholarships were finding its rural people that want to go back and work in rural areas, but theres huge financial restrictions, he said. They need to get the right training to come back.

    Mr Weaire said the next step would be funded graduate year positions for nurses. The Ballan hospital has two graduate nurses, but Mr Weaire said the service could easily take four if the positions were funded.

    We now need funded positions for nurses in their grad year so they can get qualified.

    BMX enthusiasts in Bacchus Marsh want popular jumps in Darley Park cleaned up for riders while they wait for a full-length track in Moorabool.

    Bacchus Marsh BMX Club president Les Stewart said there were many riders in the area, including eight state title holders, but they had no track to ride on. Most head to tracks in Ballarat, Sunbury, Geelong and Hoppers Crossing to train. The club is discussing two potential sites with Moorabool council. Plans for a Darley community hub identify space for a future BMX track.

    Stewart said he understood a full track was a long-term project but he said, in the meantime, informal jumps at Darley Park could easily be converted into a small-scale circuit.

    Kids keep taking to them with shovels to try and turn them into something that they are not. Stewart said he was prepared to redesign the jumps, and, if a few truckloads of fill and sand were donated, it could be up and running soon. We could have an excellent facility to train on until our track is constructed.

    Jail term for dangerous driverA woman whose dangerous driving caused the death of a father of three will be haunted by the consequences of her actions, a judge said in jailing her. On May 23 in Melbournes County Court, Judge Gavan Meredith said deterring others and denouncing Evie Trikilidiss conduct were an emphasis of his sentence. The 25-year-old dental technician pleaded guilty earlier this month to dangerous driving causing death. Trikilidis had smoked ice (crystal methamphetamine) the night before she drove into the path of a prime mover. The prime mover driver avoided Trikilidiss car but went on to collide with a vehicle on the Melton Highway in the early hours of September 26, 2011, killing its driver. Judge Meredith took into account Trikilidiss early guilty plea and remorse, lack of prior convictions, and accepted that she had taken responsibility for her conduct and written a letter of apology. Trikilidis was jailed for two years and three months with all but six months suspended for two years. Her licence was also cancelled and she was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

    Teens charged over altercationTwo 16-year-old Melton boys have been charged with assault and affray following an alleged stabbing at Sunshine railway station last month. Transit crime detectives and the Brimbank investigation unit executed a number of search warrants on May 20, which resulted in nine arrests. Investigators were told a number of people were

    involved in an altercation on April 24 when a 23-year-old Wyndham Vale man sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Nineteen-year-old Timoteo Timoteo of St Albans faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 20 and was charged with intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury and other assault- related charges. He was remanded in custody. Six other western suburbs boys between 14 and 17 have been charged with assault and affray-related offences.

    Manslaughter chargeA 21-year-old charged for the murder of a man in Darley appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court on May 22. The Fulham man has been charged with one count of manslaughter over the death of John Starling, 35, on June 8 last year. Mr Starling was found dead outside a house on Jonathan Drive. The hearing has been delayed until September 10 and the accused will be remanded in custody until then.

    Vandals attack Indian eateryAn Indian restaurant in Ballan has been vandalised. Windows were smashed, tables and chairs knocked over, graffiti painted and toilet paper strewn throughout the Steiglitz Street business. Police fingerprinted cars, walls, windows and other property on May 21 about 4.30pm. The attack on Ballan Tandoori allegedly happened in early May while the premises were shut.     Pupils at Coburn Primary School were joined by almost 200 older and eager classmates, as their proud grandparents sat in on classes and joined them for a morning tea last week as part of Grandparents Day. My favourite part was sharing the experience with them and then hearing what it was like in their day, said pupil Felicity. Ainslea (pictured with her grandmother Wendy Williams) said she appreciated her grandmothers involvement. I dont get to see [grandma] very much, and shes my family and I love her, said Ainslea.     Following on from the recent State Budget announcements, the good news has continued for the City of Melton, with additional funding for projects announced in the past couple of weeks.

    Council has been successful in four funding applications to the State Government, being $500,000 for the Bridge Road Childrens and Community Centre, $300,000 for Arnolds Creek Pavilion, $200,000 for Melton Combined Churches Food Bank and $30,000 for a Health Planning Study. This is very exciting

    news and we thank the State Government for their support of these important community projects. Its partnerships like this that enable Council to deliver quality infrastructure and timely, relevant programs for our existing and new communities to access and enjoy.

    I was particularly pleased that the Melton Combined Churches Caring Food Bank will receive funding to build a purpose-built facility at St Marks Lutheran Church on Coburns Road. The Food Bank is in need of a new home due to the expansion of Melton City Councils McKenzie Street Community Care and Inclusion aged precinct facility. This will give this valuable organisation greater capacity to provide improved and continued support for residents in need.

    Council also welcomed the announcement of $80,000 in funding from the State Government for the redevelopment of netball facilities at Melton Recreation Reserve. This funding will facilitate the replacement of one of the netball courts, along with multi-lining the second court for more varied play options and installing new lighting.

    Melton motorists are being urged to make a pledge to make roads safer as part of Fatality- Free Friday.

    The Australian Road Safety Foundations largest community-based road safety campaign is aimed at reducing road fatalities.

    Inspector Stephen Mutton says the initiative is a great way to make people aware of the importance of road safety.

    We have to keep chipping away that the message is really important, particularly after a number of fatalities late last year, Inspector Mutton said.

    Serious injuries from collisions are still up in Melton, which is a real concern.

    Cr Sophie Ramsey said people should not just make a pledge this Friday but every time they drive.

    I think when people take a pledge it will make them take their foot off the accelerator and wipe off five, Cr Ramsey said.

    We need to raise the awareness, make people more alert and get the message out there.

    Last year, the City of Melton, with 186 signatures, led the number of pledges nation- wide.

    Cr Ramsey is hoping to double the figure this year.

    In a growth corridor, we have some horrific intersections and we need to draw this to peoples attention and hopefully people will start to take note, she said.

    I think that when people take a pledge, they are more committed to the cause.

    Mayor Bob Turner said the council was determined to improve road safety throughout the community through its Road 2 Zero strategy.

    Road trauma has a devastating and long-lasting effect on individuals, families and communities, he said. Thats why it is so important to be mindful of our responsibilities on the road and make good choices for ourselves and others who share our roadways.

    In the lead-up to Fatality-Free Friday, the council will invite residents to make the pledge on Wednesday. The event will be held from noon-2pm at the Courthouse Amphitheatre, High Street, Melton, behind the Visitor Information Centre.

    Melton residents can celebrate Reconciliation Week with a range of fun and educational activities this week.

    The week, which is launched today and runs until June 3, will feature a number of activities throughout the municipality and will give residents the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

    City of Melton mayor Bob Turner said the week-long celebration would give the community a chance to be part of the national reconciliation effort.

    Some of the events taking place will include a Koorie Night Market, a guided tour of the Melton Botanic Gardens and an opportunity

    to contribute a message of reconciliation via the Bullum Bullum Tree.

    The popular Koorie Night Market will be held in Melton on Friday, May 30 from 6-9pm at the Melton Community Hall, High Street, Melton.

    It will feature performances from Coloured Stone, indigenous artworks, ceramics, artefacts, carvings, sculpture, jewellery, food, painting and dance workshops and free kids activities.

    The western suburbs have become home to a perfect harmony.

    Six men from across the west have created a team that is the first of its kind in the region and they need more members to be able to represent the place they call home on the national stage.

    Chris Daria is the music director of the Western Melbourne Mens Chorus which was formed at the end of February this year.

    The group transforms popular songs into the style of a barbershop quartet.

    Member Garry Wood said he had performed in choruses all over the world, including Asia and Africa, but he had never been able to sing with a group in Melbournes west, until now.

    This is really a matter of having something close to home, Mr Wood said.

    Previously I had to drive about an hour to find someone to sing with in either Geelong or Doncaster.

    And while nothing makes the men happier than when they are busting out some magical melodies, there is still one dream they have yet to achieve.

    They need at least six more members to be recognised as a Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) chartered group, which would allow them to compete at the BHA National Convention in September next year.

    Member Paul Newham said he was hoping he could represent the west at a national level.

    Its an amazing opportunity to catch up with 1500 other guys who have a common interest with you. You end up making friends for life, Mr Newham said.

    The Western Melbourne Mens Chorus rehearses every Tuesday from 7pm to 9.30pm at 330 Derrimut Road, wHoppers Crossing.
