Course Description: Seventh Grade English Language Arts focuses on the four academic

standards: speaking and listening, reading for all purposes, writing and composition, and

research and reasoning. This course demands increased application of developing literacy skills

and intellectual reasoning. Focus studies include: analyzing literary components, examining text

structures, developing vocabulary knowledge through context, organizing and structuring

writing for intended audiences and purposes, informative/expository and persuasive writing,

grammar and mechanics of English language. To develop language proficiency in both, ASL and

English, students learn how to make purposeful choices when responding to diverse media and

formats, videos and texts. Students read grade-appropriate complex literary and informational

texts while further developing the ability to cite textual evidence to support analyses when

responding to text in written and signing modes.

Language Use Expectations:

Students will have opportunities to learn, see, share, engage, interact,

and embrace beautiful art that lies in both languages, ASL & English text.

During class time, it is important for students to develop proficiency in

both languages, and to do that, speaking and signing at the same time is

not encouraged. Academic ASL and appropriate language is expected at all times.

The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

Extra Credit Policy: There is no extra credit work offered in this course.

Attendance & Tardiness Policy: Students who are excessively absent will not pass the course. A great deal our learning, discussion, instruction, writing, collaboration, peer-review, and assessments. I expect all of my students to attend class every day and to be ready to learn. When a student is absent (excused or unexcused) it is his/her responsibility to get the work missed and submit the completed work by the make-up due date. With long-term and assignments, students are expected to submit completed work to the teacher even if absent.

We ask that families notify the school on the day of their student's absence by 8 am. When

students are absent from school, they have the responsibility to make-up work within 2 days of their return.

Students are expected to be in class or school on time. School begins at 8 am sharp.

Students arriving late will need to go to the middle school secretary’s office to get a late pass.

Absences and tardiness considered lawful, and therefore excused, as described in the Public School Laws and Code of Bylaws of the Maryland State Board of Education are:

o Illness of the student o Death in the immediate family o Court summons o Hazardous weather conditions o Observance of religious holiday o State emergency o Suspension o Lack of authorized transportation (Missing a regularly scheduled school bus is an

unexcused absence. It is the parent’s responsibility to find transportation to school if the bus was missed.)

o Work or activity accepted by the school authorities o Other emergency (judgement of the Principal or Assistant Principal)

The attendance secretary will record AE (Absent-Excused) for any reasons above. For any other absences, an A (Absent - unexcused) will be recorded in PowerSchool.

Teachers will maintain student grades regularly. Any work not completed should receive a zero until a new grade replaces it.

Electronic Device Policy Smart phones and electronic devices including tablets, iPods, laptops, and cameras are to be

used as educational tools only in the classroom.

Usage of all devices requires permission from the classroom teacher, even in instances where a student is communicating with family members.

For not obeying the rule, the device will be taken away and may not be returned until 2:50 PM.

The school realizes that there are times when emergencies arise and families need to communicate. In the event an individual faces an urgent situation please use the Middle School Principal's Office videophone number (240-575-3831) as the contact point.

The Middle School Principal's Office can receive the call and unobtrusively inform the teacher of the need for the student to leave a class so the personal situation can be addressed without disturbing the learning of others.

Dress Code At MSD, learning comes first. We ask that students wear attire that does not hinder their ability

or other's ability to learn in the classroom.

As fashion is ever changing, it is hard to keep up with the trends and predict all the concerns that may arise. As a result, we ask that students and their families use the below as general rules/guidelines when dressing for school:

Students should wear clothing that is weather and building temperature appropriate.

Students' undergarments should not be visible either protruding out from under their clothing or through their clothing.

Beginning in middle school, students will be walking outside on a daily basis to and from classes and lunch. So, as a special note, we encourage students to come with an umbrella or raincoat on days that it is supposed to rain, and heavy coats, gloves and hats during the winter months.

Code of Conduct MSD has adopted the Maryland State Board of Education's (MSDE) Code of Conduct. The

Guidelines for a State Code of Conduct were revised in 2013, and are written in accordance with Maryland law. They identify five levels of behavior severity, with detailed explanations of student behaviors that are not permitted, as well as intervention, restorative, and incentive-based strategies to respond to student misconduct.

MSD, along with MSDE, is committed to creating a school where teaching and learning takes place every day in a safe, supportive, and respectful school environment, and where students, school staff, and families are valued and have the opportunity to succeed. The new Code of Conduct will help to foster this positive learning environment for all students.

In addition to the Code of Conduct, teachers have specific classroom behavior expectations outlined in their class syllabus. To see your student's class syllabi with information about specific class expectations, visit our website, http://msdmiddleschoolfrederick.weebly.com.
