MathThis week the students will begin our division unit. This unit is shorter than the multiplication unit. It should only last a couple weeks. Students who show mastery on their pre-test will be assigned a PBL, taught higher level skills based on their MAP data in small group, and they will work on Khan Academy. Students will be coming home with a personalized learning weekly reflection sheet that looks slightly different. For math homework from now on, students get to choose something to work on from their pathway each night. This will help ensure proper pacing that they we finish all units in time!

ReadingThis week students will continue reading their series books in their book clubs. We will be taking a break from our books in a series lessons. This week the students will do a close read on a Martin Luther King passage in honor of the holiday. Students will also be doing a paideia seminar on the passage that they read on Thursday. Students will be doing a gallery walk with their projects and they will also be allowed to choose one of their nonfiction articles to read. There are no formal presentations for these projects and the presentations are not counted as part of their grade.

WritingStudents will finish up their research for their nonfiction newspaper articles. They will learn this week how to write good paragraphs. This means they begin with a main idea sentence and it is followed by several detail sentences. They will also learn how to write subheadings for their paragraphs and a good title.

Science- This week we will continue with our Earth in the Universe unit.

Social Studies- This week we will try to begin our new unit, which is geography. Students will learn about latitude and longitude, the compass rose, and be able to explain the difference between absolute and relative locations.

Notes from Ms. Deming -There is no vocabulary homework this week due to projects being due. We will be doing all vocabulary assignments in class. Because of this, please make sure your child studies their words before their test on Friday. -Attention: HELP NEEDED for our second quarter class store! We haven’t received that many items yet as of today 1/19/16. If you can bring in anything last minute, it would be greatly appreciated! Items of high interest include: mechanical pencils, cool erasers and grippers, notebooks, cool paper, stuffed animals, snacks, candy, drinks, toys, keychains, markers, twist up colored pencils, and books.
